Please Read this message from our friends at Gentle Doctor Animal Hospital and write your senator. Veterinary care is health care and should never be taxed.

Clients and Friends,

We need your help. The Nebraska Legislature is still considering a sales tax on veterinary services for pet animals, including those pets which provide therapy and emotional support. A final vote could come on Thursday, April 18.

We ask you to take moment to contact your state senator and encourage them, again, to VOTE NO on LB388.

โ€ข Additional taxes put a burden on working families.
โ€ข Increased veterinary costs could force pet owners to forego routine care, ultimately harming the pet and increasing the risk of spreading diseases.
โ€ข The rise in cost could create more pet surrenders or euthanasia.

This is an urgent matter for the veterinary and pet animal community. Please don't wait, contact your senator today and tell them to VOTE NO on LB388.

Please take a moment to email the following Omaha area senators to express your opposition to the bill.

We love hearing wonderful feedback from our clients. Lucy had a salivary gland cyst filled with thousands of sialoliths (stones) that required removal of the salivary glands and the cyst. We are happy to hear sheโ€™s doing so well!

โ€œWe want to thank you, Dr. Rachwitz and everyone involved with Lucyโ€™s salivary gland surgery. I wish we would have done this so much sooner. She is like a pup again, healing well- the swelling has gone down tremendously. Itโ€™s so good to see her so happy! Thank you all again, James, Trish, Lucyโ€

Separation anxiety is commonly diagnosed in our canine patients. This often leads to inappropriate and/or destructive behaviors such as cage chewing. Unfortunately, the incisors and canine teeth can be damaged as a result. These behaviors may not be witnessed, as many dogs chew at their enclosures when they are alone in the home. Metal staining and distal abrasion may be the first clues to separation anxiety behavior. Continued damage leads to fractured and pulp-exposed teeth. Collaborating with your primary veterinarian is so important, as they are trained to focus on behavior modification. Our specialized dental procedures can repair painful pulp exposures or protect the tooth before that much damage has occurred. Pictured are teeth that have received cast metal crowns. The intention is to prevent tooth fracture and costly root canal treatments.

It was a big week for us at NDOSA! Some of our staff attended the annual veterinary dental forum in Louisville, Kentucky. Our technicians Ashley and Sara both received their official certificate as a veterinary technician specialist in animal dentistry or VTS (Dentistry). We are beyond proud of all the hard work and dedication they made to get this monumental achievement!

The thought of major surgery for your pet can be scary. We're here to help your furbaby and ease your mind.

Duke had a bilateral rostral mandibulectomy to remove a large oral tumor that was causing pain and threatening his ability to eat. With the tumor removed, the tongue will be more prominent, but despite some minor cosmetic changes to Duke's "look", he knows no different and continues to be a happy, healthy and now cancer-free dog!

In order to accomplish this, Duke had to spend just two visits with us.
He had a five-hour visit to take a 3D xray called a CBCT, to plan for surgery and get a biopsy (a small piece of the tumor), and on a separate day he had an eight-hour visit to have his surgery. Surgery time was two hours.

We have multiple hotels within one mile of our practice, so some pet parents from out-of-town come to Omaha the night before their appointment.

We are so grateful that people from Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota trust us to care for their pets!

K9 Shiva had a bit of a training accident, and we got her back in working order with root canal therapy, a minor gum surgery and a full metal crown. She was a perfect lady while in our care, but we would advise you not to find out if the repaired tooth works as well as the other three canine teeth. Good girl Shiva!

16/02/2023

Let's talk about dead teeth! The most common way for a patient to develop pulp necrosis aka a "dead tooth" is by fracturing the tooth into the pulp. Fractured teeth may not contain the infection, however, as the infection has the ability to spread through the root end "apex" and create painful and dangerous cellulitis throughout the face. The pictured puppy had this very problem. His entire left side was swollen, making him look like a Sharpei, but he is a Golden Retriever! A single fractured "baby" canine tooth caused severe facial pain, infection and fever. We must never ignore fractured teeth at any age, and we must never allow a fractured puppy tooth to remain simply because "it will fall out soon anyway". This pup needed a 20 minute procedure to extract the tooth (discolored grey in the other photo) and as we extracted the tooth about 5cc (a teaspoon) of liquid pus flowed from the socket!

It is so rewarding to help a puppy like this! Don't ignore fractured teeth, even in the youngest of patients!

22/12/2022

Our Harney Street (in Omaha) location has finished seeing patients for 2022! You can still call Twin Creek Animal Hospital (in Bellevue) at (402) 505-9033 to schedule procedures for 2023 at EITHER location. Dr. Rachwitz will inform you at your consultation which location is best for your pet to receive it's procedure. This is not based on where you live, but rather, if your pet needs CT instead of traditional dental x-rays. CT (computed tomography) provides superior anatomic detail and allows us to make better, more informed decisions for both dental patients and oral surgery patients, but may not be mandatory for all our cases. Below is a CT slice image and a dental x-ray image and the detail in the CT is remarkable.
