In the quiet moments with my equine companions, I've often found myself slipping into patterns of familiarity that obscured their true needs.

Rico, with his history of food insecurity, was a prime example.

His anxious, rushing energy during feeding time was a reflection of past trauma, a fear etched into his being.

In the face of his distress, I too often responded with urgency and impatience, mirroring his own agitation.

This reactive behavior only perpetuated the cycle of fear and tension. Yet, recently, I've made a conscious effort to shift my perspective.

By grounding myself, attuning to my breath, and cultivating a sense of inner peace, I've been able to approach Rico with greater empathy and understanding.

This newfound awareness has allowed me to respond to his anxiety with patience and compassion, rather than fear and frustration.

Today, as Rico approached his meal with a surprising sense of calm, I felt a profound sense of gratitude. This small victory is a testament to the power of mindfulness and the transformative impact of conscious presence.

As I continue on this journey, I remain committed to honoring the sacred bond between human and horse. By cultivating peace within myself, I can create a space of tranquility for my equine companions, allowing them to heal and thrive.

Warm congratulations to this horse/human pair and their discovery of doing less. Or, rather, settling mindfully into the present moment and discovering that it isn't less. There is a whole world of nuance curled up in a quiet moment between human and horse.

The student was coached through getting more in touch with her breath, and more able to be present with her horse. It happened in the form of her slowing her steps, human and horse beginning to move more mindfully in tune with each other. She was able to become more intuitive to the horse's perception of their shared environment. So when the instruction came, to give a precise technical cue, the communication between them was the chime of a small bell in a hushed room. The quiet, a precursor to clarity.

Bucking Tradition supports equestrians in joyfully creating traditions of quiet and clarity with their horses. Thank you to this student and horse for the opportunity to teach this, and for their brilliant learning.

Pssst- Q wants to talk to you about environmental management.

It's been a dry year. Dangerously, painfully dry. And the lack of water is bringing wildlife closer to our animals who are provided with fresh, accessible water in an attempt to utilize these very basic resources.

We have seen more documented cases of rabies in cows, and at least anecdotally, more cases of EPM in horses.

Please consider providing fresh, shallow water dishes for squirrels, raccoons, and possums *outside* of your horses' primary living space. It's a win for everyone - the animals are able to get the very basic things that they need, and you are able to encourage a better option than your troughs/pastures.

Remember that these water sources also must be refreshed/refilled regularly, or wildlife will most likely go back to using the more potable water source (likely your trough!)

You may now return to your regularly scheduled scrolling 😉

For many adults entering the equestrian world for the first time the interactions with horses can feel confusing and intimidating. Many barns are geared towards showing or children's lessons. Others expect riders to have grown up as equestrians and don't cover topics outside of riding mechanics.

"How do I learn how to relate to a horse?" you question, "there must be more to them than steering around an arena or getting from one end of the trail to the other." We at Bucking Tradition would like to show you that there is so much more.

Bucking Tradition presents The Relationship Package: A Whole Horse Experience, where adult amateurs can get a handhold on the deeper relationship possible with a horse right from the beginning.

Lessons will be ground and riding based, and introduce concepts such as:

- Connection through guided mindful grooming and space-sharing with the horse

- Learning how horses subtly communicate with each other, and how to use body language to communicate with them

- Explanations of what happens behind the scenes to help horses have well-adjusted interactions with humans

- Learning to form a stronger bond through boundary-setting and quiet, grounded leadership

- The meanings behind why we do what we do when interacting with a horse

This package is four one hour in-person lessons at the reduced price of $380 total, for up to two participants at a time. Lessons are offered Monday (11-7), Tuesday (11-7), and Sunday evenings(5-7) on site in Tracey's Landing, MD.

We're certain that this quick introduction to the whole horse, not just their job description, will be fulfilling in a way that standard riding lessons just can't compare against. However, if for any reason you don't feel the lessons are a good fit for you, after the first two lessons are completed we welcome you to fill out a feedback survey in order to turn in your last two lessons for half your money back. Our approach to relating to horses isn't for everyone, and we leave room for this.

Nestled beneath the setting sun, communion unfolded between horses and students. Everyone gathered to unravel the tapestry of equine healing, working softly with touch and simple modalities to alleviate some of the most common ailments. With gentle hands and open minds, we worked together to soothe weary souls and continue our betterment as students of the horse. Phoenix, Fin, and Maya found release of physical and emotional tension, embraced the balance of stillness and intentional motion, and found renewal in our time together.

Today, we welcome Cherry Bomb.💗She is one of our largest investments to date, and it was not an investment taken lightly. There are doubts that come along with expansion in a small operation. Will this help me achieve my goals? Is this the most responsible use of available funds? It's an investment in the future of the business. It's placing faith that as you hold true to your vision and move towards the actualization of a bigger impact, that you will grow into that space that has been made for you.

It's not unlike our overall vision for our future with horses. If you come to them humbly, making room for a new relationship to flourish, that they will be open and receptive, choosing to meet us with renewed energy and an open mind. You place faith that as you embrace a new approach, that they will continue to choose engagement without obligation. That you will be met with success and room for mutual growth.

The arrival of Cherry Bomb symbolizes a profound commitment to our farm's ascension. As we celebrate a new milestone at Bucking Tradition , we embrace the promise of a flourishing future, where our investments bear fruit and our community prospers.

This space, this process, has showed me so much of who I am. It's given me the space to examine the "why" of what I'm building, gently guiding me in the right direction and showing me the importance of creating a space of peace for both horses and humans.

It's the difference between showing up to a barn and feeling like an outsider as you question the happiness and wholeness of the horses housed within it, and being welcomed into a community of like minded people, quietly exhaling with the horses that surround you, and feeling like you're home.

It's examining the way we're training horses, and establishing WHY it's working. And being humble enough to step back and evaluate when it isn't.

There has been so much molding, shaping, and evolving that's occurred thus far, and the process is just getting started.

I've been evolving my training approach, systemizing the methods that have proven to be well received, and abandoning the ones that do not best serve the animals I've committed to.

We have three spots left available for lessees who are interested in attuned horsemanship on site with our wonderful crew in Tracey's Landing, MD. This lease isn't binding to one particular horse, but allows you to work within our network of kind horses, teaching you to work with different stages of training and personality types.

Two sensational horses available for two days/ week on-farm half lease in Tracey's Landing, MD. We have access to about 40 acres of scenic trails located at one of Maryland's premier Bed & Breakfasts. We do frequent group rides and are a social, close knit group of professional adults. This is a community bonded by our love of horses and our complete investment in their happiness and well-being.

Quasar: 4 year old APSL geldings. He stands a compact 14.1 and would be an amazing match for the petite rider to explore with. He is bold, curious, engaging and personable. Hacks out well alone. He is the calmest 4 year old I have ever met, and handles challenges with curiosity and a level head. He hacks out alone or in company and is self-assured and uncomplicated. While he lacks "technical" skills, he is a fast study and safe.

Rico: 14 year old APSL Lusitano standing 15.2. Rico is trained through 2nd level and is a sensitive and intelligent horse. He takes his confidence from his rider and would be an unbeatable match for someone who can roll with new situations and enjoys a challenge. He is athletic and a responsive ride, steering beautifully off of the seat and leg aids. He is an Energizer bunny and would love to get out and explore the trails with an experienced rider looking for a reason to get back into horses!

Each is available for $375 for two days a week, with lessons available for lease participants.

It's a blessing to dance with a horse you've raised. To stand by their side from the time they were young, and have the privilege of seeing the world through their ears. Being with him makes my heart sing, and forget the daily stresses that come with business. With family. With life. Settling into the peace and breathing together, moving together melts everything else away. Thank you, for soaring with me, love. I love feeling you spread your wings. 💗

Rico out here kicking (picking??) up his heels for new grass day

I spent some time with the horses today. It sounds so small. I spend time with them every day. But today, I took the time to see them. It's hard to remember to pause and enjoy the process in the quagmire of establishing a business, providing the daily care, and practicing patience and empathy in multiple other facets of your life.

It's easy to burn out. To forget where the great love lies within the minutia.

So today, we sat together. I made them a hot weather drink of peppermint tea and watched them enjoy. I didn't worry about social media content, or returning texts and emails. I just worried about the feel of their silky summer coats on my fingers, and the smell of their sweet breath.

There is still so much to do, but my horses reached my soul today, and it felt wonderful.

(Ok but I did take some video of Q enjoying his tea. 🤣)
