As equestrians, our main priority should be to always keep our horses feeling their best, on the inside and out. However, this is not always as simple as it should be. Here are the 3 common skincare mistakes that we see most often, and how to avoid them👇

1️⃣ Unbalanced diet:
Protein, carbohydrates, fat, vitamins, minerals and water all directly impact horse skin health, and are essential nutrients for overall horse health. This will also boost the immune system, helping your horse(s) to fight off infections quickly and effectively.

2️⃣ Inconsistent deworming schedule:
Keeping your horse(s) on a consistent, regular deworming schedule will keep their skin healthy and coats shiny. Ask your veterinarian which specific active ingredients your horse should have in each deworming cycle, so they do not become resistant.

3️⃣ Ineffective fly control:
Most equine fly sprays contains toxic chemicals that does not necessarily help the horse, or repel flies for that matter. We find that natural ingredients and essential oil based products, are much more effective for our horses, without putting toxic chemicals into their bodies.

Does your horse eat oats? Is your horse prone to ulcers? Last months newsletter discussed some causes, treatment, and presentation of ulcers. However, I have only recently learned that oats, along with other starch-filled feeds make ulcers worse.

This is because feeds containing a lot of starch encourage acid production in the stomach. On top of this, the pointy shape of whole oats poke the ulcer, irritating it.

We all know, probably more than we’d like to admit, that gastric ulcers are, although quite common, no good. However, ulcers affect each horse slightly differently, so it can be difficult to pinpoint exactly what, why, and how we must treat. In summary of our most recent newsletter ⬇️

There are two main types of gastric ulcers:
1. Squamous Ulcers are ulcers located in the upper portion of the stomach, near the esophagus. Ulcers are far more common here, mostly due to the fact that this area of the stomach does not produce mucous or bicarbonate, which protects the stomach tissue from the gastric acid that causes ulcers.

2. Glandular Ulcers are located in the lower part of the stomach and, although this area of the stomach produces its own gastric acid, ulcers are less comon here because the mucous and bicarbonate protect the stomach.

In our barn, we use Omeprazole to treat ulcers because it reduces acid in the stomach. However, some negative side effects may occur if not given properly, so you should consult a veterinarian before use. On top of that, we feed smaller meals more frequently (rather than larger meals less often) to help regulate acid production in the stomach. However, grain does not produce nearly as much saliva as forage does. Saliva helps to buffer the acid in the stomach, so giving your horse access to plenty of hay and grass is extremely important to help prevent ulcers in the future.

I love to look back on pictures of past horses that have greatly benefited from our products and this is possibly one of my favorite cases ⬇️

Stella, an 18 year old broodmare came into the barn one morning with a very infected, deep wound on her right front leg. It turned out that she was allergic to penicillin and similar antibiotics, so I decided to try MYHHHORSE Healing Salve on it for a few days and see what happened. I knew the natural salve had worked very well on other similar wounds, but I was in disbelief at how well the salve worked on Stella's major infection. After 10 days of gently scrubbing the wound with water and then applying MYHHHORSE Healing Salve twice each day, nothing remains but a small scar. And after about 15 days, the wound was almost completely gone.
