ScentLogix is proud to be the first suite of non-hazardous biodetection training aids chosen by SCENTSOURCE to serve as flagship odors that commersurate with their training philosophy of odor based training.

It is therefore the responsibility of ScentLogix to adhere to the principles of odor based training, and to share their observations and scientific findings to help bolster this gamechanging biodetection training paradigm.

One of the important preludes to our understanding of odor is the definition of odor itself.

So, what is odor?

"Odor is the currency that our biodetection working dogs use to get their job done."

We will define odor to the biodetection community as "a unique composition or collection of odorants that constitute the scent signature of a material." Odor is not a single gase. All the target materials we currently detected by canines globally are made up of "scent-signatures of odorants" as their true target odor. It is the interaction of these scent signatures with the diversity of olfactory receptors (sensors) within the nose that we call olfaction, and the skill of following an odor tendril to its source is known as scent detection. A knowledge of behavior modification methods are needed a successfully pair a strong theoretical knowledge of odor with the production of a detection dog of superior performance.

SCENTSOURCE is where true science certainly meets true practice.

Just as white light is comprised of seven primary colors, most odors comprise of "two or more odorants" combining to form an odor.

Just as "eyesight" sees what matter reflects, "nosesight" sees what matter secretes.

We've been using the eyes to define the nose for a long time, but this is about to change as we provide groundbreaking insights to how your odor-focused imprinted dogs are better than their material-focused imprinted peers, and why.

Our Odors at ScentLogix are built under the premise that "odors are waves." Since we never believed that "dogs use their noses to find materials," but instead, believed that "dogs use their noses to find the source of the odors they were trained to detect," the odor-based training approach of SCENTSOURCE is a perfect aquarium through which to expand this practical science by supporting its education, training, citizenship and certification programs.

CONNECTING THE DOTS:
SCIENCE PHILOSOPHY, & THE COMMUTATIVE NATURE OF "x + y + z = 24."

Those thst have attended my clases know the meaning of my equation:

X(Trainer) x Y(K9) x Z(Training aid) = 24 (good biodetection K9 on an arbitrary K9 performance scale, handler excluded).

The question is... trainer or the training aid, which comes first with regards to a performance outcomes of a biodetection canine?

Does the selection of a trainer matter more than the trainer's selected training aid, or does the desired type of training aid used preceed the selection of trainers based on those on those that use it?

Trainer Vs Training Aid: Which comes first when all that matters is the performance outcomes of the canine?
Two actions are said to commutative if it doesn’t matter in which order they are done to producce the same outcome. If the action that is done first does not provide a similar outcome with if the second act was done first, then we say these acts are non-commutative.

So what do you think, do these two operators have a commutative relationship within the x,y,z, equation of getting the product of a good detection dog (24), or does the initial selection of one of these two (or three since its an x,y,z) operators over the others outweighs the outcome of the finished biodetection canine?

A Question From SCENTSOURCE to Practitioners and Scientists

If all biodetection training aids used within a team were "live" training aids then all those K9s using these aids should have a 94% - 99% certification pass rate when certified on another "live" training aid from anywhere on the planet, with the 6% - 1% of failures coming from "handler error."

These K9s should also automatically and interchangeably alert on other "live" biodetection training aids brought in by other local, national, or international teams during training, reliably and with no problems, since these aids are all supposedly classified under the same category of "live."

Question 1: Why is this not the case?

Question 2: When a classification does not lead to a logically agreeable definition or to a reliable prediction of performance outcomes (barring trainer or handler errors), is it a professional classification?

Question 3: Do some of our pseudo-professional classifications (by definition) equate to a case of "having something to use instead of having nothing," or of "making something thats still nothing, out of nothing."

THE THEORY OF "SCENT THEORY"

There are a growing number of scent-work and nose-sport enthusiasts that use the word "scent theory" to draw biodetection professionals into classes and workshops when these events are not based on "true theory" but on a compendium of instructor opinions, with the instructor fatally overlooking the crucial fact that there are certain processes and actions necessary to promote/upgrade a "narrative" to being a "theory."

First, "thoughts and opinions" are developed and tested for their plausibility to be a "hypotheses," which now undergoes a battery of scientific (quantitative) tests to classify them as either "truth" or "fallacy."

If the discovered truth can be mathematically expressed due it the repeatability and consistency of its results, it becomes a "theory."

Remember a theory professes experience-proven phenomena, not simply experience. This is not an overall criticism of such classes; however, as a community, it is a wake up call for us to start to police ourselves on our choice and usage of words and definitions.

Most of the words which are appropriate for most definitions/description of our acts and of our art are, thankfully, already available within many quantitative, well tested, expressions of other professions - no need to reinvent the wheel of new definitions, we simply need to find them. We have found, and are going to, use a few at SCENTSOURCE. One of these is our international use of the "Kelvin" scale to record temperature.

This way, "absolute zero" will become a known definition within our industry

In the spirit of true professionalism, it is important to use the words that most appropriately define our circumstances rather than deceptaconic descriptors used to sensationalize or sensitize a topic/seminar/workshop or act.

So, please, let's refresh our minds on what a scientific theory is and ensure that our profession adheres to sane and smart boundaries of language use ❤

On this day 29th February 2024, we proudly announce the establishment of an international biodetection canine system open to agencies, institutions, academics, associations, and individuals that seek knowledge of scent detection working dog theories and practices from a fresh, game-changing perspective which is a result of over two decades of joint scientific and practitioner studies.

This system, aptly named,
"Scents for Canine Evaluation and Non-hazardous Training System of Unified Research, Certification, and Education (SCENTSOURCE™)"
intends to stand out as implementing the industry’s first international certification and training standard that uses odor as its primary system criterion.

SCENTSOURCE™ combines a practitioner-proven scientific understanding of odor with (i) a set of science-defendable standards and definitions, (ii) a globally-unified training system using a suite of well-characterized and scientifically understood non-hazardous biodetection training aids that have been operationally proven to be game-changing alternatives to legacy training aids, and (iii) the set scientific justifications and know how to defend the use of these aids logically, expertly, effectively, and successfully in a court of law.

With these desirable advantages, SCENTSOURCE™ will be able to: (i) operate an international and world-class biodetector canine certification program using capable practitioners,
(ii) utilize a science-backed and validated suite of non-hazardous scent-training aids (ScentLogix) specifically designed to serve as an odor standard for certification and training programs, and,
(iii) produce an "odor-standard of training outcomes" that K9s trained on other training aids can be benchmarked against.
