Please be safe out there! Just got word from a fellow classmate (ER veterinarian in Seattle area) during her shift yesterday they had 8 dogs DOA due to heat stroke, most short nosed breeds! Please provide shade, plenty of water, allow access to house if possible and DO NOT take any walks unless early in the morning. ~ Dr. S

Hey Everyone!

Please prepare your pets in case of an evacuation. I have a feeling this wildfire season is going to be brutal!

Attached is an easy-to-follow list of what is recommended for your “GO NOW!” pack. Share this with your neighbors and help each other out. I guarantee the folks in the valley likely never thought it could happen to them. Don’t wait…. Make a plan now. Cheers!

Warmer weather is on the way in and that means a rise in heat related medical issues that we see. Many such incidences are entirely preventable through education.

We all, hopefully, know about the dangers of hot cars; but have you thought about the heat in the ground you walk on? If it's too hot for your feet, it's certainly too hot for your pets. Asphalt is especially dangerous for your pets feet when the temperatures rise.

Consider your yard and what you would need to be comfortable outside for long periods. Is there shade to cool off in? Water to drink? Pets should always have a safe place to get out of the elements, including the hot Sun.

Education is the key to prevention. Share this information for yourself, for your friends and family. Most especially, for all those pets that should be safe and happy.

The heat is on in the high desert!
Exercise your dog in the morning or evening when temperatures and pavement are cool. The paw pads can get severely injured from the hot pavement, and melted tar can get stuck to pad and hair. Pets need exercise, but do it in the cooler hours of the day.
Press your hand on pavement for 5 seconds, and if it’s not tolerable for you, it’s too hot for your pets. Hiking trails and dirt also retain the heat. Dog booties offer protection for paw pads on trails and pavement.

This past weekend, Oregon residents (in the Bend area) were evacuating from their homes due to wildfires. This was a good reminder that wildfires can occur in any season.

If you are advised to evacuate, take your emergency supply kit, lock your home, and choose a route away from the fire hazard. Watch for changes in the speed and direction of the fire and smoke. Tell someone when you left and where you are going.
