"Pawster Nashville kept my micro family together. Communication was always easy and timely. I was so afraid of being judged for being in a tough spot but everyone was friendly. Thank you so much to Gabe and my foster. Chestnut is doing great, and my partner and I thank you so much for giving her a safe space while we looked for ours!"

Thank you to Chestnut's foster and everyone who helped make this happy reunion possible! This is why we do it.

🏠What does housing have to do with pets?

💰Affordability: Housing is not affordable right now. Pet Deposits and “Pet Rent” often are the difference between someone being able to move into new housing and not. Landlords who choose to discount or waive pet fees can make housing affordable for people with pets. Until then, Pawster will pay pet deposits for anyone whose pet we are fostering so they can reunite with their pets.

💕Family: It’s almost too obvious, but pets are family. Would you move into housing where you can’t bring your children? Of course not. Why are we asking people to choose between their pets and housing?

⚕️Mental Health: What keeps people in stable housing after a crisis? Support. And pets are one of the easiest ways to give people structure, purpose and emotional support.

What YOU can do:

1. Share this post to help educate people in power.

2. Foster a pet with Pawster.

3. Donate to support Pawster’s work to pay pet deposits.

"Athena is doing amazing. We love her so very much. She loves going to the dog park at our apartment and saying hello to other dogs. Recently we have been taking her on adventures around where we live. She loves the change of scenery. She has a sister and a brother (cats) and she gets along with them great."

We love hearing updates from our Pawster alumni. Athena went home earlier this year, and she is doing great back with her family!

Happy Caturday from our FOUR adoptable cats: Muzan+Zion (Orange and Black) and Misty+Gabby (Black and Black). They are here to explain why TWO cats are better than one.

If you want to adopt one of these pairs, just complete the foster form at pawsternashville.org/foster and write the names of which cats you want to adopt!

Bonded Pairs...

🧠 Provide mental stimulation: Playing together can keep cats entertained and less likely to engage in destructive behavior.

✌️ Have reduced inter-cat conflict: Bonded pairs have each other to lean on.

💞 Are better adjusted: Bonded cats are more likely to be better adjusted to your new home and may find comfort in each other.

Pawster participates in Shelter Animals Count, a program to track data across all animal welfare organizations. Their Mid-Year Report was just released, showing trends for the year, which you can see below.

https://www.shelteranimalscount.org/2024-mid-year-report

"As we pass the midpoint of 2024, I want to take a moment to share some important updates about the current state of animal shelters and rescues.

On the potentially hopeful side, we've seen a decrease in community intakes, with nearly 5% fewer dogs and cats entering shelters compared to the same period last year. This translates into roughly 155,000 fewer animals coming into shelters in the first half of 2024 compared to the first half of 2023. Both stray and owner surrender numbers have declined. What the data does not show is whether the intake reduction was due to a decrease in community need or in shelter availability.

Unfortunately, the decrease in intakes is matched by a reduction in community live outcomes. So far in 2024, 2.7 milion cats and dogs have experienced a community live outcome, which is almost 5% fewer than last year. So while intakes have gone down, so have outcomes, keeping the overal outcome rate the same at 92% of al intakes. This means there has been little headway made towards reducing the number of animals waiting in shelters, which requires outcome rates to increase.

Another key trend is the increase in length of stay. Despite lower intake numbers, animals are staying longer in shelters, leading to an increase of 75,000 dogs and 247,000 cats in our care so far in 2024. Across the nation, we’ve heard from shelters who are struggling to maintain capacity for care, and the data in this report offers some clear insights as to why there are too many animals in the sheltering system.

What our data shows is that expediting outcomes and shortening length of stay are the most crucial and effective ways to solve the bottleneck of animals stuck in the shelter system. We've heard from many organizations that they're having to work harder for every outcome and that shelters that lack resources for effectively marketing pets are struggling to find enough outcomes to keep pace with intakes.

Thank you to al of the shelters who contribute data to make this report and al of our SAC reports possible. In this difficult time, we are incredibly grateful that you put your trust into us and we hope this report will help you better understand the challenges and opportunities within your own organization."

Pep Pep and Remi are the cutest and cuddliest little pair of old dogs, but... their old teeth had Stage 4 Periodontal Disease and desperately needed attention! In total, their dental work cost $1,744.14.

Thanks to generous monthly donors, we had enough in the Pet Wellbeing Fund to pay their bill!

Still, most pets average only $200 for vet care. If you want to help cover the cost of dental work for Pep Pep, Remi and other foster pets who need extra attention, please consider joining the Monthly Donor Pack at givebutter.com/month or make a one-time donation on this post!

When it comes to pets relinquished due to housing, we often think of large, blocky-headed dogs as being the primary category of pet that needs our advocacy. However, intake data from HASS Pilot Shelters suggests that small dogs are almost as likely to be relinquished due to housing reasons as large dogs!

In our dataset, which was collected from 21 shelters between 2019-2021, we saw population peaks at 11 lbs and 55 lbs and although large dogs make up the greatest percentage of dog intakes at 20% of total dog intake, small dogs were right on their tail at 19% of total dog intake. This suggests that our policy advocacy must be broader than traditional breed, weight, and size restrictions which won't improve housing situations for our smaller furry friends. Adding issues like arbitrary number restrictions, prohibiting or mitigating the use of nonrefundable up-front fees and monthly pet rents, and tenant eviction protections to your organization's policy agenda will be key to creating pet-inclusive housing that is accessible for all people and their pets.

"Uno is doing wonderful! He just celebrated his first birthday and is thriving! Thank you again for all your help, you helped me and my guy stay a family! God bless you!"

These are the updates we love to hear. Uno came to Pawster while his owner moved into sober living.

As she put it, "Uno helps me in my recovery and makes me smile and laugh when I dont want to. He is so loving and sweet and maybe the smartest puppy I have ever met. I need to know he will come back to me and be happy in the meantime while I work on my recovery."

Thank you for making stories like Uno and his owner's possible. Thank you for keeping them a family!
