โžข Back in mid-March, I attended the first-ever public Downunder Horsemanship Advanced clinic! It was a 4-day clinic in Tuscon Arizona run by Professional Clinicians, Shayla Smock and Jeff Davis. I went with Martini!

โžข When I first found out about this clinic, I was actually at Jeff Davisโ€™ Fundamentals clinic with Dakota in Woodlake. I was super bummed. I couldnโ€™t possibly make a 14+ hour trip. To another state? No way!!

โžข Butโ€ฆ it fell into place!! My DUH friends and I decided to make the trip together. And although it was a little outside my (and Martiniโ€™s) comfort zone, Iโ€™m so glad we made it work!

โžข Not only did Martini and I learn and progress SO much in a matter of 4 days, but the people I met and the connections I made were absolutely incredible. I met the most amazing Downunder Horsemanship people. REAL Downunder Horsemanship people!

โžข It was so fun to hear all the stories of their experiences with the method and Clinton himself. And although I was the youngest there, with my little rescue Arab that I started from scratch that knew very little of the Advanced series, Jeff, Shayla, and my fellow participants made me feel totally included and comfortable.

โ€œLet your haters be your elevators.โ€ -Josh Feuerstein

No matter how good your intentions are, how hard you work, how much you serve others, how great you are at what you do, the dreams, goals and wishes you have to help other people, your family, your community, to give back- there will still be people out there who wish to see you fail and maybe even worse.

Do not let them stop you!

In fact- allow them to elevate you!

Haters are usually the loudest right?! And you know what being loud takes??

Energy!

And you know how that works.

Energy can neither be created nor destroyed!

Transfer that negative hater energy into fuel for your mission, for what you are doing and guess what?!

Thereโ€™s nothing a hater hates more than to see you suck their energy and use it to get stronger, better, to help others more and to succeed more!

Iโ€™ll be the first admit it sucks when some of your haters are those you once admired, but it happens.

Most of the time when youโ€™re genuinely doing something for the greater good those that hate on you merely donโ€™t understand. And sometimes we have to get better at our delivery.

But we got to keep pushing forward!

Donโ€™t let that negatively slow you down or stop you!

Many many many more are inspired by you, look up to you, dream of being you, maybe even depend on youโ€ฆ

And if you stop now you stop serving all of those who matter!

Itโ€™s all just energy! Capture it and turn it into fuel for your mission, your purpose, your motivation!

You got this!

-C**ton Woods

โœฐ The journey is often more important than the destination

โžข When your horse works through the problem and tries to find the right answer, they learn to think. And especially think for themselves!! When working with horses, our goal as trainers should not only be to teach the horse to do the desired behavior, but to teach the them to think and find that correct behavior. That journey to the final product is what truly transforms your horse!

๐‘๐ž๐ฆ๐ž๐ฆ๐›๐ž๐ซ: Letting your horse find the correct answer makes that thinking side bigger and that reacting side smaller!

28/01/2023

Wise words from me a year ago:

โ€œSuper yes!!! Please read everyone!

Patient clients are the best clients! It takes a long time to get a good foundation on a horse. But itโ€™s also important for clients to make sure that the trainers that they are hiring arenโ€™t keeping the horse for more money. Something Clinton says that I stand by is that if a client is paying $1,000 make them think that theyโ€™re getting a deal. Make them think that they are getting $1,100 out of it. Or even more! (Paraphrasing) I always try to make it so that they are getting MORE than what they pay for!

But, back on topic, people need to be patient when it comes to training. A solid foundation takes a long time. Do not expect a good solid foundation in short time! Each horse takes a different amount of time. Itโ€™s important for both the trainer and the owner to be flexible with that.โ€

30 DAYS IS NOT ENOUGH!

60 DAYS IS NOT ENOUGH!

A well rounded, well trained horse takes years to develop and THEY ARE WORTH THE INVESTMENT!

Good training isn't quick. Good trainers aren't cheap. When you take an un-started horse to a trainer, 30 days is not enough. The bare minimum should be 90 days. Longer is better. Yes, it costs money.

Horses ๐ŸŽ Cost ๐Ÿ’ฒ money โ€ฆโ€ฆand there is no way around it.

Make sure you choose a trainer who is honest about this and isn't just trying to keep your horse longer for the money. Sit in on sessions once your horse is in training and ask questions. 30 days is not enough for the majority of horse owners to step in and continue with the success of the horse. Youโ€™re setting the horse up for failure. If youโ€™ve taken the horse out of training too soon, not only will it affect the horse but you're also setting blame for the โ€œbad trainerโ€ that didn't get your horse broke and kid safe in 30 days.

In most cases, what your horse and trainer can do together after 30, 60 and 90 days are not what you and your horse can do together.
This means you need to be engaged in the process with your horse, in lessons and seeking to learn yourself if you want to recreate the education your horse is receiving.

The expectation of a 90 day horse is that they now have a solid foundation of the BASICS.

What those basics are will vary from horse to horse, age and trainer, but understand that you do not have a finished horse by any stretch of the imagination... and you don't usually have a beginner safe horse. Having the expectation that this is possible, is unfair to the horse. Remember, your horse won't necessarily retain ALL of what they have learned when they go back home unless you continue to work with your horse consistently and with a similar set of skills. Set realistic goals and put the time in that your horse needs and deserves, it's worth the investment!

โœฐ โ€œDecide that you want it more than you are afraid of it.โ€ --Bill Cosby

โžข This surprisingly has a really great connection to horse training. If you desensitize properly, youโ€™re horse can learn to crave the scary thing, instead of being fearful of it. Itโ€™s about where you work, vs where you rest. Or where you apply pressure vs where you release it! But in connection to us as people, sometimes what youโ€™re fearful of, is your very path to success! Lean into God and grow in that path. ๐Ÿ’œ

โœฐ Dakota (once named Coco) was a wild mustang that I trained. Dakota is now at his forever home. My first session with Dakota was super easy! From that moment I knew heโ€™d be a good one. He was a yearling in these photos and now heโ€™s nearing three and broke to ride! Heโ€™s grown so much since his first ever session.

One of the Things I Actually Struggle the Most With

When it comes to basics of horse psychology, every horse is the same. So itโ€™s important to learn horse psychology before you try to train. Horses have similar instincts, movements, and behaviors when it comes to herd dynamic and survival.

Every horse has similar basic instincts and psychology, but there are many things that make horses unique. This includes breeding, personality type, etc. But a lot of a horseโ€™s tendencies can depend on their past/past trauma.

I definitely learned this the hard way with one of the last client horses that I had in for training. Because of Dannyโ€™s past, he took a lot longer to feel comfortable with things than your regular domestic horse. I have an overachieving and perfectionist personality so it was difficult for me when Danny didnโ€™t follow the timeline that I had initially expected. But I soon had to come to terms with the fact that horses learn at different paces just like humans do. They are not machines and take different amounts of time, effort, and energy.

One of the most important things to remember on this subject is to keep an open mind. Your horse may need something different than what you initally expected. Your horse may need more or less time than you initially expected. A lot of times when you rush your horse to fit your expectation, you increase the chances of leaving holes in their foundation, you will get a lower quaslity resit. you put bnoth you and the horse and the owner at risk, and you decrease your chances of success. And you increase your chances of burning out, getting frustrated, or losing your joy of working with horses!

โœฐ So, keep an open mind and go with the flow. Some horses simply need longer than others!

โžข The start of a good relationship with your horse begins with being a good leader. The problem with being your horseโ€™s โ€œfriendโ€ is that there is no clear positioning in the partnership which confuses the horse. Itโ€™s important to remember that horses arenโ€™t humans. They communicate differently than we do!
โžข Horses in the herd have a distinct leader and pretty much all of horse training is emulating horse behavior. Horses in the wild take clear commands from their herd leaders. If the leader senses fear, the others follow without question. Horses are scared of chip bags and water bottlesโ€ฆ I donโ€™t think I want them calling the shots!
โžข Horses are happier when you are a good leader. When you are a good and respectable leader, they can relax and trust you to make the decisions. It takes a lot of weight off of their shoulders!

โœฐ Zeeva is a 6 year old quarter horse born and raised at Valley View Equine Rescue. She had been started at Wonder Wood Ranch a few years back and has now found her forever home!

Zeeva is in for training for behavior. She has kicked 3 separate times. Injuring her owner and others. On the third time, she shattered her ownerโ€™s tibia and fibula. Zeeva is also touchy behind the saddle pad and is defensive about her back end. Her owner was at the end of her rope, so she reached out to me for help!

โžข Zeevaโ€™s on trial with me for a few weeks to see how she progresses. Then, weโ€™ll go from there! Over the next few weeks, I plan to take Zeeva through the Fundamentals groundwork to fill in any holes that she may have developed.
โžข After that, I am going to zone in on her main issue (kicking) by taking her through the hobbling and leg restraints series. Then, Iโ€™ll pull exercises such as turn and go, turn and draw, throw to a stop, etc. from other kits in order to help with her defensiveness above her hock and to prepare her for driving.
โžข Then, when she is prepared for driving, I will teach her to ground-drive in order to tackle her blind-spots and get her used to things touching her sides. But of course, we will take it how it goes and how she does!

Since she has been at the ranch, Zeeva has had a few sessions. And I couldnโ€™t be more pleased! Since she has been with me, she has kicked out once on both sides, but when she had been corrected, she hadnโ€™t kicked since. Zeeva has made tremendous progress. I have done 4 sessions with Zeeva and the results have definitely given me hope!

โžข My plan is to teach Zeeva to teach Zeeva to handle higher pressure and to be able to fluctuate from high to low stress situations without getting defensive and kicking. And so far sheโ€™s been doing well!

โœฐ Join me to see how she progresses!

โžข Horses have 2 sides, the right side and the left side. One side can be completely different than the other. I like to say, when youโ€™re training 1 horse, youโ€™re actually training 2 horses, the left horse and the right horse!

โžข Because of this, it is important to work on both sides of the horse. Horses need to relearn the concept that you are teaching them on each side so make sure you restart the training process when you switch.

It is completely normal that a horse is worse on one side than the other. This can be through suppleness, desensitization, impulsion, etc. When a horse is worse on one side, I work 2/3rds on that one side, and 1/3rd on the good side to maintain it.

โœฐ Remember; New side, new brain, new horse!
