My vet school classmate, UGA 2000, Jeff Johansson lost his clinic in Swannanoa, NC to the floods from Hurricane Helene. His clinic was completely demolished. He has finally decided that it is okay to ask for help. If you have a few bucks to share, we can do amazing things a little at a time. Please share to those you know. And thank you.

On Thursday, September 26th, 2024, the staff of Beacon Veterinary Hospit… Jeff Johansson needs your support for Rebuild Beacon Veterinary Hospital After Flood

Ground zero in Asheville and Swannanoa today. One of my good friends has been helping with a pop-up clinic all week in Swannanoa in a parking lot filled with mud and now dirt and dust. She is exhausted, grateful, and will readily say she has no idea what she is doing. But she is helping in the town that held the clinic she worked at until the flood. She has no storage, and will be looking for options to continue next week as DEGA veterinary mobile clinic is leaving to go back to their home.
But if you do not have a contact in the area, do not just drive in with supplies. If you know people, you can reach out. But there will be hundreds of communities that will need help in the future. We just can’t drive there right now. They are still on search and rescue mode here. Helicopters flying in and out all day, four wheelers riding down interstates, mud and debris everywhere. NC people are amazingly strong, there are so many helpers out and about. But there will continue to be needs for months, probably years. Many of those here have lost everything. Many have lost loved ones. And while all of the outpouring of love and donations and offers of help are much appreciated, there is more worry that they will be forgotten after a couple of weeks go by. Thank you all for caring.

Most of us are familiar with the poem, “The Rainbow Bridge”. And most of us think that the author of this poem is unknown, as the person is not given credit when the poem IS used. I stumbled across this article today in a Veterinary Palliative Care and Euthanasia group on Facebook.

Edna Clyne-Rekhy wrote the poem at the age of 19, and only recently learned how far it has traveled and how much it has come to mean to animal lovers all over the world. Her original writing is found as an addendum in the article.

Her final quote of the article is what caught me the most: “If you love a dog, if you truly love it, it will always live on.”

If you meet your pet in the afterlife, thank Edna Clyne-Rekhy

On National Grief Awareness Day, we take a moment to recognize the profound impact that losing a beloved pet can have on our lives. Pets are more than just animals—they are companions, confidants, and members of our families. Their loss leaves a void that can be deeply felt and difficult to navigate.

Grieving for a pet is a natural and important process. It’s okay to feel the weight of their absence, to miss their presence, and to honor the memories you shared. Whether through quiet reflection, sharing stories, or creating a special tribute, finding ways to remember and celebrate the life of your pet can be a meaningful part of healing.

Today, let's acknowledge and support those who are grieving, reminding them that their love and loss are seen and valued. Grief is a journey, and it’s one that we don't have to walk alone.

Behavioral euthanasia is not something that anyone likes to think about. But the reality is that some of our pets, even with fantastic behavioral resources and training, never become comfortable in our world. And those pets that are not ever comfortable can truly be suffering.

Losing Lulu is a website and Facebook group that provides support for families that have faced losing a pet due to behavioral euthanasia. The Facebook group is for those dealing with the loss of a pet already, and is not for seeking guidance. The website, however, shares resources to help owners come to a decision about their loved pet.

Our friends at https://zenpetscolumbia.com are certainly a wonderful resource to utilize locally for behavioral issues. Dr. Adele Hilliard is a veterinarian on the path to becoming a behavior specialist that is located in Greenville at https://feelpawsitivevetbehavior.com/meet-the-team.

I, too, have lost a beloved pet due to behavioral euthanasia. Be assured I understand and I will work with your regular veterinarian in order to do the best we can for your pet should the need arise. However, please understand that I reserve the right to not provide services if I feel it is not in the best interest of the pet or my safety.

I hope the resources provided by Losing Lulu can be a source of direction and comfort. —Dr. Knight

Many clients are unsure about home euthanasia for their pets and want to know more. As a certified veterinarian that has undertaken training in this area with the Companion Animal Euthanasia Training Academy, I do my very best to provide a peaceful euthanasia experience for my clients.

This 10 hour certificate training that requires 4 hours of additional training each year for renewal focuses on providing a GOOD EUTHANASIA, an acronym for different areas I want to make sure I am providing my clients. The article below details what each letter represents. If you have any questions regarding home euthanasia, please reach out or see my website at www.forgetmenotvet.com.

“I’m Dr. Kathleen Cooney and I’m a Certified Peaceful Euthanasia Veterinarian.” This feels great to say and it’s been a long time coming. Over the years, many of you have asked for a CAETA (Companion Animal Euthanasia Training Academy) certification to complement our 10-hour Euthanasia M....

Unfortunately my phone number has been picked as the latest one to get numerous spam calls a day. Of course if you answer one spam call, they immediately know it’s a live number and share with their scammy friends. So I have been receiving 15-20 calls per day that are mostly spam. PLEASE, if you need service or have questions, PLEASE leave a voicemail or send a text so that I know you are real. In order to try and slow the spam calls I am not able to answer unknown numbers at this time. Thank you for understanding.

Today my family was thankful to help serve alongside others for The Street Dog Coalition. Dr. Jen Bonovich of Columbia Animal Services helped organize the first event for the City of Columbia to serve the underserved and homeless and their pets. I look forward to assisting with these events in the future. If you have an interest in helping, please reach out and I will be glad to help sign you up!

I am helping out tomorrow. If you would like to volunteer in the future, please let me know.
