- When my instructor repeats to me: ′′Straighten your shoulders and open your chest!” He’s not just teaching me how to stand up. He's teaching me that in life we should always walk straight and face problems head on.

- When my instructor asks me to lower my legs and keep them close to the horse, he teaches me that in life we do not allow distractions and that little is enough to deviate from his path.

- When my instructor tells me "Too much hand, don't hang on to the reins! "He teaches me to give and not to take, with the greatest respect of others.

- When he yells and repeats endlessly: "Look forward in the direction you want to go!” He teaches me the importance of setting goals and never losing sight of them to achieve them.

- When I ask to move up or do more and my instructor says I'm not ready, he teaches me that in life you must always respect your rhythm and never skip the steps.

- When I fall and get back up, I learn that there are always setbacks, times when we back up, but the important thing is to get up more determined than before.

- If I hold my breath during a ride and he jokingly tells me "breathe! You are purple!” I understand that you have to let your emotions flow in order to get rid of them.

- When at the end of the course I am happy with the work done and my instructor says to me′ ′Well done, thank your teacher′′ I know he is not referring to himself but to my horse.

- Now you, you who are watching a rider pass in the saddle, keep saying that riding is not a sport because it is the horse that does everything. I agree. Horse riding is not a sport. It is a life lesson.

Something to never forget, something Bill Steinkraus said years ago---(Something like this)

"When you do well, people tend to praise you too lavishly. When you do badly, people tend to criticize you too harshly."

Basically "people", generally, don't know their ass from their elbow about much of anything. If you have a good day, good round, good show or event, good. Now go home and try to get better.

If you have a bad day, bad round, bad show or event, tough. Now go home and try to get better.

Ignore all the yada-yada-yada from the peanut gallery. What they think has no bearing on anything. Let THEM get on horses and go prove it if they know so damn much.

Do YOUR thing. It's the only thing over which you have control.

Unbridled With Jimmy Toon

Jimmy Toon has truly done it all in the equestrian world, from standing with horses at kids’ parties to winning at Madison Square Garden. He has raised multiple Horses of the Year, racked up accolades including champion at Capital Challenge on Fade To Black, coached clients to wins at Indoors and judged prestigious shows across the country—which he continues to do today. He runs his JT Farm from South Salem, New York, with his wife, Ellen, one of the winningest amateur competitors in the country—and also one of Jimmy’s students, which is how they met.A lot has changed in the industry since Jimmy got what might be, by today’s standards, a “late” start at 17, but he’s hopeful for the future of the sport. He and Ellen donated the In Disguise Perpetual Trophy to be presented to the trainer of the World Championship Hunter Rider Amateur Owner 3’6” National Champion at the Capital Challenge Horse Show; In Disguise, Ellen’s horse that started with Jimmy, is one of the few hunters ever to score a perfect 100, was USEF Horse of the Year in 2004 and will be inducted into the Show Hunter Hall of Fame this year.

“Last year I accomplished so many of my goals with my horse. We qualified for WCHR, The Pennsylvania National Horse Show and the Washington International Horse Show—in a very competitive division. We even earned a few ribbons indoors! Now I’m in the middle of the 2023 season not doing nearly as well and wanting to qualify for indoors again this year. I think that the pressure I’m putting on myself is affecting me, but I don’t know how to get over it. Help!”

Confidence is the single most important factor when it comes to sports. There are so many things that can affect our confidence: family pressures, negative thinking, having ridden poorly in a previous class, and issues at the barn, just to name a few.

Bill Steinkraus told THM in 1983: “I cannot stress too much the vital importance of restoring all aids to their normal state as soon as the horse has complied with them. Once the horse has gone forward, ease up on your driving aids; once it has shortened, open your fingers again enough to reward. It is very common to see exactly the opposite: the rider gets the horse to come back once, but never releases his closed fingers again, and spends the rest of the hour hanging in the horse’s mouth, or, having gotten the horse to go forward, spends the rest of the day with his legs stuck halfway through the horse. The reason you want your aids to be effective is so that you can teach the horse to respond to them more and more sensitively – and so that you can use them less and less."
