Meet Lucky the barn owl!

When he was first found, a well-meaning person kept him for days on the wrong diet and tried to splint his broken leg themselves. Sadly, it made things worse—and by the time he got to us, his leg had healed incorrectly and he could no longer have a chance in the wild.

Most owls in his situation would have been euthanized… but Lucky truly lived up to his name. Thanks to your support, he’s safe, thriving, and now helps teach our community about protecting wildlife.

👉 Please remember: if you find injured native wildlife, take them to a licensed rescue immediately. We would have loved for Lucky to return to the wild.

We’re creating a brand-new habitat for our Asian otters. This exhibit is needed to keep them safe from avian flu while also enriching their lives for the years to come.

Here’s your daily reminder to love on a tortoise ❤️

Orlando is a rescue tortoise who came to live with us after a drug lab was raided in the Sacramento area. He was extremely malnourished in pretty rough shape. We aren’t sure how old he is, but we do know he won’t ever have to live in those conditions again.

He received his name “Orlando” from one of the patients at George Mark Children’s House ❤️

Donors, tours, and supporters like you are how we can give Orlando and the many other rescues like him a forever home and the care they need. You can see Orlando during any experience while it’s warm outside!

Over the years, Wine Country Zoo has brought a delightful parade of rescue animal ambassadors to George Mark Children's House: a baby kangaroo, capybaras, small alligators, sloths, and more!

Every visit sparks curiosity, laughter, and connection, and provides patients and families a chance to share in something unexpected and joyful.

Even more incredible? They do this entirely for free, driven purely by heart and a deep commitment to bringing comfort through creature encounters. George Mark was honored to surprise WCZ with a Hummingbird Award in honor of the years of dedication to our patients and families.
