Cashew walks with confidence like he knows he outlived the dinosaurs—and he kind of did. These prehistoric giants have essentially been unchanged for millions of years.

With a bite force strong enough to crush bone and a worm-like lure on their tongue to ambush prey, they’re basically living fossils… just a little slower and a lot more patient.

We’ve been seeing an increase in rescue snapping turtles lately—many from situations where people weren’t prepared for how big and powerful they become. They’re also illegal to own in most states, including California.

Sgaeyl our female African Dwarf croc enjoying a late night snack. Night time is when she typically feels most comfortable to come out and explore so we take the time to do some tap training for enrichment

Dragon is one of those animals people don’t realize they like until they meet a well mannered one. This is Australias tallest species of bird and the third tallest species on the planet after the ostriches. He can be viewed fr our Outback exhibit here at

These two are officially on probation. 🙃
They somehow managed to break their brand new filtration system… impressive, honestly.

We’re working on fixing their little “renovation project,” so hang tight with us. At this rate, we’re aiming to have their exhibit open in May… assuming they don’t discover any more ways to cause chaos.

Send help, good vibes, and pour one out for our team who are ready to cry. Sound on 🔊

Mango is thrilled — we’ve officially kicked off our sloth swimming pool project!

A huge thank you to the incredible Vicky Coker, whose generous donation is covering the entire cost of the pool itself. This is a one-of-a-kind project, just like our slow-moving friends.

Now we need help with the final step: getting it here. The pool is being partially constructed in Florida and shipped all the way to California, with transport costs just under $3,000 - thanks gas prices.

This will be one of the first sloth pools of its kind in the U.S., giving us a rare opportunity to better understand what these animals truly need to thrive—not just survive. And yes… it means a front-row view of sloths swimming if they choose to!

If you are willing to help or cover the shipping costs to have your name on it under Vickys please visit https://www.winecountryzoo.org/donate-volunteer

Everyone please wish the Director of Brandi a very Happy Birthday! Brandi is the heart that started it all and continues to teach and inspire people about wildlife in a safe and ethical manner. Whether it’s sloths, lemurs, crocodilians, giant rodents, big cats, etc our amazing director has always used herself to promote wildlife rather than use wildlife to promote herself. Happiest birthday Brandi!

We had the opportunity to run a hands-on mini course covering crocodilian handling, identification, and safe capture techniques—focused on real-world scenarios, safety, and animal welfare. From proper restraint to reading behavior cues, it’s always rewarding to share the knowledge that keeps both people and animals safe.

With the amount of illegal wildlife being brought in we genuinely love working alongside Utah DNR—professional, passionate, and always committed to doing what’s best for wildlife. Looking forward to hosting them in CA.

So much fun with this group today! Our sloth tours are educational, ethical, and so much fun. We only offer private tours so each group gets full attention of one of the animal keepers to answer questions and connect with the animals. For more info visit WineCountryZoo.org

Late night feeding for Ollie our Orinoco Crocodile. Fun fact, Ollie is currently the only Orinoco Crocodile on the West Coast. Not so fun fact, his species is critically endangered due to being hunted for their skin.
