Happy New Year from Boise Vertical Farm!

This year-end letter from our director has two purposes:

1) Report our progress and let you know what we have been working on at Boise Vertical Farm
2) Request a year end donation from you to continue our good work

Our goals when we started in 2019:

1) Provide Community Service Hours to those in recovery who have been arrested, charged and sentenced with crimes related to drugs and alcohol.

2) Provide Employment Resources for Community Service participants that are ready to move away from Drugs and Alcohol. With our Employment Resources program, we will create mentorships, training, education, skills development, and support programs for people in recovery who are ready to move from addiction to become contributing members of society. We believe Mentorship is the answer.

3) Help Prevent Relapse. Most recovering addicts and alcoholics have a history of relapse. Very few find recovery on the first try. Many relapse repeatedly. If we can stop repeated relapse, we can help prevent overdose deaths.

We have made excellent progress toward our #1 planned goal of providing Community Service hours. In 2021, we received 3 candidates from the ADA County Court System into our Community Service Program. In 2022, we received 36 candidates from ADA County, Canyon County, and the Idaho Department of Corrections. 53% were women, and we provided 1167 hours of Community Service. In 2023, we have received 45 candidates from ADA County, Canyon County, Gem County, and Elmore County, as well as the Idaho Department of Corrections. 56% have been women, and, to date, we have provided 863 hours of Community Service.

In 2022, 85% of our candidates completed their assigned Community Service hours and stayed clean and sober.

Our Mission is to provide Hope, Employment Resources, and Community Service Hours for people in recovery from drugs and alcohol.

What we have learned:

Our average participant is 20 – 30 years old and female. They have been sentenced to between 4 and 200 hours of Community Service. Most have struggled finding good jobs with a future in a clean and sober environment. Most currently work in fast food, in restaurants or bars. Most are exposed to drugs and alcohol daily.

After getting clean, people in recovery are excluded from better jobs due to transportation issues, limited skills, lack of childcare, limited or nonexistent work history, and a drug/alcohol related arrest and conviction. These are the problems we are trying to solve.

We have been pleasantly surprised that most Community Services participants have been polite, respectful, hardworking and easy to get along with. Most take direction well, have been teachable and are very bright. Many just need mentorship and direction.

In most cases, these are people who turned the wrong direction in their teens and 20's and need to find a better path to follow. We are asking you for the financial help needed to provide that path.

Since 2019 we have funded our 1st goal with grants, loans and money received from selling produce and products.

As we move forward, we need money to fund our second Goal.

Helping people in recovery learn new skills, gain additional education, will actually save our society money. Studies have shown that addiction and alcoholism costs $2,000 to every man, women and child in the US.
An NIH Study shows that for every $1 spent on recovery and employment programs for recovering addicts & alcoholics, society saves between $7 - $12 dollars. The cost of addiction & alcoholism is in lost potential, lost productivity, lost wages, drug related crime, increased health care costs, law enforcement costs, and criminal justice costs. Employment programs have been shown to have the best rate of return on investment.

Please donate to Boise Vertical Farm.

The people we work with are worth saving. They can become contributing members of society with a little help.

Thank You,

Jeff Middleton

Our Story

Boise Vertical Farm has one mission, to create a safe community that provides hope and employment for individuals in substance abuse recovery by growing local produce. This mission was born out of personal experience, passion, philanthropy and hope. Those of us that have experienced addiction and the difficulty of finding our way in life through recovery know how challenging it can be to move forward while maintaining commitment to our recovery.

We believe that growing produce is much more than what it seems, it’s growing confidence, growing emotional understanding and support, growing trust in ourselves but also trust from others and growing ourselves. These things are difficult to do for anyone, but for those who are caught up in the cycle of addiction it can seem impossible. We want to show them that it’s not.

Boise Vertical Farm is committed to helping those who need help, who want help and who will accept help. We are excited to be a valuable asset to our community and provide a service in a way that benefits everyone involved, from the individuals who need help to the people who will enjoy the product of our labor, produce that’s grown locally in a sustainable way.

If you want to support our mission, stay in touch or keep track of our progress, please feel free to send us a message with your name and email address so we can add you to our mailing list. We are in the process of building a website, we’ve applied for 501(c)(3) status with the IRS and have a wonderful team of volunteers who are excited to turn this idea into reality. Thank you for taking the time to read our story and we hope to hear from you soon!
