I don’t teach stay because it’s implied. If I give a command such as sit, I want the dog to hold that command until I say otherwise.

What I found over time is that when owners are teaching their dog to hold a command, the owner may use “stay” as a crutch. They say the word multiple times as they are backing away from their dog as they hope the dog holds their command. The repetition of the word “stay” waters down the command and show the dog that they do not have to listen the first time you said it, because you will remind them multiple times.

Instead, try teaching an implied stay. This means if you ask you dog to sit, they are to hold that command, no matter the distraction, until give their release word. Of course we would start easy and build up the duration and distraction level over time. This eliminates having to “remind” your dog and allows for better communication with your dog since they know they are going to be there until you release them.

I’ll let you in on a little secret.....

Consistency is the key to dog training and it makes a HUGE difference!

If you aren’t clear, consistent and don’t follow through with your training, it will show.
🗝 Keep your commands consistent (verbal and non verbal). “Human” is not your dog’s first langue. They do not know that down and lie down can be used interchangeably in the English language. Stick to one command word and use it each time to represent that command ie:down.
🗝 Consistently working with your dog everyday.
🗝 Not repeating your commands multiple times in a row. It is confusing!!! Think of it this way, if someone kept asking you the same thing over and over again not giving to a change to think, you would be frustrated and confused too. Use the one and done approach. Say your command only once and help your dog through it.
🗝 Providing consistent structure, boundaries and rules. Keeping everyone in the household on the same page. Family Member #1 can not allow jumping if Family Members #2-4 don’t allow it. You are sending mixed signals and making training confusing for your dog. This one little thing could really set your training back.
