What do we include in our lameness evaluations?

A LOT ⬇️

We take pride in our comprehensive lameness exams 🐎 We start by getting a full history, asking you how you describe the lameness, and for our performance horses watching any videos of recent runs.

Next we watch your horse move at the walk, trot, and lunging to both sides to get a baseline lameness evaluation.

Then we do a thorough nose-to-tail exam, including full spine palpations, hoof testers, full limb palpations, and all joint flexions.

Depending on exam findings we may recommend additional diagnostics (nerve blocks, x-rays, ultrasound), joint injections, or other therapies (osteopathy).

We offer a variety of joint injection options, as well as options for tendon injuries, navicular disease, and kissing spines.

One of the most important parts of our lameness evaluations is the client communication! We will explain findings throughout the entire exam, discuss diagnostic and treatment options, and collaborate with other equine professionals to create the best plan for your horse.

Best of all? We offer FREE recheck exams for horses that get a lameness exam and injections so that we can assess response to treatment!

Fall is quickly approaching, and it’s time to start planning for cattle preg checks!

We perform pregnancy diagnosis via ultrasound. For our herds that like us to perform fetal aging, we recommend preg checking 30 days after the last breeding date for best accuracy.

Our schedule fills up quickly in the fall, so we recommend scheduling as soon as possible! To schedule, please call 406-403-6583.

🗓️ Important upcoming dates!

These are the dates in the next two months that we know we’ll be unavailable for appointments and/or emergencies. Plus a reminder about Janelle’s last day with us.

As many of you may already know, we have some bittersweet news to share. Janelle is getting married this fall and will be moving to South Dakota where her fiancé works, which means she will be leaving South Peak.

Janelle has been an incredible tech and a vital part in the creation of this business. Her impact through her skills and passion for large animal medicine, especially performance horse medicine, will leave a lasting impression throughout Montana. And she will be sorely missed by our piggy patients that she gave so much extra care to.

Although she’ll be deeply missed, I’m thankful for the time that we had her with us, and for the care and success she brought to our business, our patients, and our clients. I wish her all the happiness and success in the world in this next chapter of her life.
-Dr. Kolar

Janelle’s last day with us will be September 20th. Please help wish Janelle well by leaving a comment! ⬇️

Thanks to everyone who participated!

To celebrate our 2 years in business we’re doing a giveaway! If you’ve been with us from the beginning, you know that from 2022-2023 we were only open 2 days per week as we transitioned out of our other jobs.

We tallied it up and from June 2022 to June 2024 we’ve worked 267 days at South Peak, so to celebrate we’re doing a giveaway for $267 off veterinary services!

Over this past week we’ve been able to complete our complimentary recheck exams from lameness day. We’re happy to report marked improvement in everyone and some of the athletes have even won money already!

The feedback from lameness day has been overwhelmingly positive: our clients have commented on how much they appreciate the time spent with them to do more advanced work up and diagnostics, explain results and procedures to them, and offer a variety of treatment options tailored to their horse’s needs.

Most exciting to us is that the meniscal injury we treated with Prostride and Spryng is already showing improvement on recheck ultrasound! We’re so happy to see the healing progress and will be adding Spryng to our arsenal of joint treatment options for the future!

Lameness Day was a great success! We worked from sun up to sun down yesterday performing lameness exams, ultrasound exams, radiographs, and joint injections. Our joint injections included steroid/HA, Prostride, Spryng, and sometimes a combination of those!

We’re so thankful for Dr. Shoemaker taking time out of his busy schedule to come consult on cases and share his wealth of knowledge. We’re always looking to learn more and improve on what we do, and thanks to Dr. Shoemaker we learned a few new techniques and got to try some cutting edge therapies!

We also want to thank our Sound reps for providing a couple ultrasound machines for us to demo during lameness day and for providing dinner after a long work day. Thanks to their high quality ultrasounds we were able to identify meniscal tears in a couple horses, which allowed us to get them the proper treatment and shorten their recovery time.

Another thank you to our Zoetis Equine rep for being available to discuss Prostride with our clients, providing Prostride rebates, and providing us with lunch.

A final thanks to all our clients who hauled in and to Trickle Creek Stables once again for hosting us! We can’t wait to do the follow-up exams on all these horses and see the progress they’ve made!

Why should you have a veterinarian do your equine dentals?

Because it gives you the best value for your money!

What do you get in return?

🦷 Access to your veterinarian’s extensive education and experience

🦷 Having an expert be able to sedate your horse (legally) and be able to immediately intervene if any negative side effects occur

🦷 Provides another opportunity for your vet to examine your horse and be notified of any health changes

🦷 Provides an opportunity to save more money by combining the dental appointment with other preventative care (physical exam, vaccines, deworming, coggins, etc)

Dr. Kolar has had advanced training in equine dentistry and performs dentals according to the recommendations of board-certified equine dentists. We pride ourselves on providing valuable, high quality dental care that is low stress for your horse. Our number one goal is keeping your horse’s mouth balanced for long-term health.

Happy International Women’s Day!

Through veterinary medicine we get to work with so many amazing women: pet owners, other veterinarians, other equine professionals, ranchers, equestrians, businesswomen, pharmaceutical/distributor reps, and more! We’re so thankful for all the strong, kind, hard-working women in our lives.

In honor of International Women’s Day we want to highlight all the women-owned businesses we love and work with regularly:

⭐️ Payne-less Solutions LLC - a crucial part of our equine team and the best Equine Osteopath/Equiscope therapist around 😉

⭐️ Trickle Creek Stables - the best boarding facility in Great Falls, and the most gracious owner who allows us to use her facility when needed (and let us use her best horse in our equine video 🤩)

⭐️ KO Therapy LLC - our newest partner in the equine world and a dedicated, skilled Acuscope therapist!

⭐️ KRose Company - the best company to work with for marketing! They made our logo and website and got us hooked on the South Peak stickers you all love!

⭐️ Cattleman U - doing more than any other company I know of to encourage women to be involved and empowered in agriculture 👏

Check these businesses out and support them as much as you’ve supported us ❤️

Last week Dr. Kolar went to Knoxville, TN for her final round of practice management workshops through AABP. The “Building Excellence In Rural Veterinary Practices Workshops” are designed to help early career veterinarians operate successful practices to work on large animals and serve rural communities. These workshops have provided a ton of valuable education, and we look forward to taking what Dr. Kolar learned this year and putting it into action!

Are you ready for calving season? Whether you’ve already started calving season or have another month to wait, this is a good time to do a final inventory of supplies and make sure you’re ready for whatever comes your way! To help, we’re re-posting our calving checklist.

•OB sleeves
•OB l**e - ⚠️CAUTION: if you think the cow will require a c-section don’t use J-Lube, as it can cause fatal peritonitis if it gets in the abdomen
•CLEAN OB chains and handles
•Calf puller - make sure it’s in working order ahead of time
•Disinfectant - use dilute iodine/betadine or chlorhexadine
•Sterile syringes and needles
•Injectable medications - operation-dependent, but may include injectable vitamins, vaccines, and antibiotics
•Colostrum replacer - minimum of 100g IgG per dose
•Milk replacer
•Electrolytes
•Bottle and esophageal feeder
•Thermometer
•Warming system - can be anything from calf heater to heated room to bathtub
•Ear tags, elastrator bands (if applicable) - if banding calves we encourage everyone to switch to the new Lidobands! These are lidocaine-impregnated bands that will provide pain relief for up to 42 days! 🌟

And last but not least, have your regular veterinarian’s number easily accessible!

Save this post to reference as you go through your calving supplies this spring!

January has flown by and we’re in final preparations to go full-time! Please make note of these dates for the next couple weeks, especially our official full-time start date of February 12th (just in time for those winter-calving herds 😉).

Dr. Kolar will be heading back to Tennessee next week for her final round of AABP Rural Practice Management Workshops. She’s excited to learn even more about running a successful rural veterinary practice so that we can continue to improve and provide the best care possible!

26/01/2024

We’re excited to bring Dr. Shoemaker’s practical knowledge to our lameness day! Want to know more about Dr. Wade Shoemaker? Check out his Countryside bio below!

“Dr. Wade Shoemaker was raised on a commercial cattle and quarter horse ranch in Divide, Colorado. Growing up on a high altitude ranch and being raised in the 4-H program allowed Dr. Shoemaker to gain a deep understanding of not only the process of production and health of all large animals but also the importance of handling each of the species for successful ranching. This knowledge allowed Dr. Shoemaker to be quite successful in showing both English and Western performance horses and working his share with a rope in his hand.

Dr. Shoemaker’s professional interests encompass nearly anything that involves the performance horse or beef cow. Specifically, he spends most of his time working on performance horse lameness and correcting issues that cause a decrease in performance. In the spring, he also breeds a number of mares via artificial insemination and works to perfect the art of embryo transfer. Dr. Shoemaker paid for most his college and entry fees by shoeing horses. Wade also spent time during veterinary school working in the vet hospital on therapeutic cases for in-house surgeons. Today Dr. Shoemaker still enjoys the challenging foot issues that are such an important part of keeping the performance horses working. Many soft tissue surgeries are performed by Dr. Shoemaker.

Dr. Shoemaker is an avid and accomplished horseman. He enjoys branding, ranch rodeos, and catching wild cattle. Dr Shoemaker is a member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and works all of the roping events. Dr. Shoemaker spends the remainder of his time working with young horses and helping his kids with their rodeo and showing interests. Due to the fact that the Shoemakers only ride what they have raised and trained, this an involved task.”
