Can you imagine saying this about your child?

"He knows basic commands."
"I just want him to be obedient."

You would NEVER!

If a dog's brain works similarly to a child's...
Why do we say these things about our dog?

Dogs aren't robots.

They don't need to be "commanded" to do things.
They can make good choices without being "obedient".

So if we're not commanding obedience, what are we doing then?

We don't command, we cue.

Sit
Down
Shake
Stay

Those are all CUES for behaviors, not commands.
A command is compulsory and insists.
A cue is an opportunity and invites.

When taught PROPERLY, a cue becomes more powerful than any command.

10 out of 10 times, when someone tells me their dog knows "basic commands", it doesn't.

The owner sits there yelling "Sit" at the dog 400 times while getting frustrated that it's not responding.

On the 401st time, the dog sits and the owner thinks the dog actually knows the behavior...when in reality, the dog was just tired of standing there for so long.

I don't know about you, but I don't want to have to tell my dog what to do every time I want it to do something.

For example, if I don't tell my dog to "sit" before someone pets him.

It's implied.

He knows that if he wants pets, he needs to be sitting.

✨ Imagine your dog waiting at the back door patiently without having to say "stay".

✨ Imagine your dog calmly waiting for their food bowl without having to say "wait".

✨ Imagine your dog walking nicely on a leash without you having to say "heel" the whole walk.

Which one do you think your dog will respond to better?
Which one do you think makes the dog more in-control of it's learning?
Which one do you think will improve your relationship with your dog?

Tomorrow, we are diving into HOW a dog learns, so that you can start teaching your dog anything!

🎃 Halloween Safety Tips for Your Pup! 🎃

Halloween can be a lot of fun for us, but for our dogs, it can bring on new sights, sounds, and smells that may be a bit overwhelming—or even downright scary! Here’s a quick rundown to help keep your furry friend safe and happy this spooky season:

🐾 Keep Treats Out of Reach: Chocolate, artificial sweeteners (like xylitol), and candy wrappers are all big “no-nos” for dogs. Keep all human treats well out of reach, and instead, have a few dog-friendly treats on hand so they don’t feel left out!

🐾 Beware of Costumes: If you want to dress up your dog, make sure the costume isn’t restricting their movement, vision, or breathing. Some dogs might be more comfortable with just a festive bandana or collar instead!

🐾 Limit Doorway Encounters: If you’re expecting trick-or-treaters, consider setting up a quiet space for your dog away from the front door. All the commotion, plus people in costumes, can be stressful and lead to unexpected behavior.

🐾 Glow Sticks and Decorations: Keep decorations like glow sticks, candles, and wires out of reach. Glow sticks, if chewed, taste bitter and can cause drooling or foaming, while candles and wires pose serious hazards.

🐾 Watch for Wandering Eyes: Halloween night can be a busy time for all kinds of creatures, so if your dog is joining you for some outdoor fun, make sure they’re on a leash or in a secure yard to avoid any surprises.

🐾 Identification is Key: Ensure your dog has updated ID tags and a microchip, just in case. New sights, sounds, and smells can make them extra curious and more likely to wander.

Let’s make this Halloween a treat for everyone, including our four-legged family members!

🧡 Stay safe, stay spooky, and give your pup a belly rub from us at Common Scents Dog Training!

Something really scary happened yesterday...
..and I need to talk about it because it will help other dog owners give their dogs the best life they can.

I took my boyfriend's dog, Garth, to the vet yesterday.
He's old (9 y/o), he has some lumps, and unexplained weight gain.

So I had a FULL workup on him done.
I gave him some Trazodone to help with the visit because he can be weird around new people.

But he did so good and even made new human friends!
The vet was raving about how healthy he is for his age.

We get home.
Walk in the door.
Take one step in.

Annnnd he falls over and starts having a seizure.
(photo is a screenshot from the video, you can see his back leg tensing up.)

At one point, he stopped breathing.

It took him 20 minutes to finally get up.

My first thought was "Andy's going to kill me if anything happens to this dog!"

But then I got to work.
Checked the time.
Took a video to show the vet and to have time stamps if I needed them.
Called the vet.
Kept him cool.
Tried to stimulate him to get him to come-to.

It was the longest 20 minutes of my LIFE.

And the only reason I was able to get it through it without completely losing my cool beans all over the place is because I am Cat and Dog First Aid Certified through the Red Cross.

But it got me thinking about my clients and how THEY would handle the situation.

Would they know what to do?
Would they be able to stay calm?

And that's why I'm writing this post.

PLEASE go get Pet First Aid Certified.

It's only 40 minutes of your life.
And only costs $25.

You'll learn about:
- taking vitals
- breathing & cardiac emergencies
- wounds & bleeding
- seizures
- preventative care
- CPR

1 in 3 pets have an emergency EVERY YEAR.

So the statistical likelihood that you'll actually NEED this information is high.

Garth is doing absolutely fine now.
We're hoping that this was just an extremely rare side effect of the Trazodone and not something more serious.

Me on the other hand?

I aged 10 years and had an adrenaline dump that lasted a few hours LOL!

Hey Dog Mom,
I see you.

You got your first dog as an adult.
You've always wanted your very own.
That's what you do, right? Get married and get a dog.

You've spoiled it rotten.
Potty trained it like a boss.
Taught it to sit, lay down, and shake.

He's SO smart!
You really haven't had to do much with him, really.

But one day he does something out of character.

He growls at someone.
He barks and lunges at another dog.
He tried to bite someone.

You're scared, I know.
You're wondering where you went wrong.
You feel defeated.

You're worried if it's too late to fix it.

All of your friends and family are giving you bad advice that conflicts with what's in your heart.

He's a GOOD DOG. Why can't the rest of the world see that too?

I know.
Because I've been exactly where you are.
And I became a certified dog trainer to help people just like you to navigate this unexpected change.

You didn't know you had to teach him, because he's such a good dog.
You didn't know about Fear Stages.
You didn't know how to expose him to things properly.

Stop beating yourself up about it, because you DIDN'T KNOW.

I'm here to tell you that your dog IS a good dog.
I see it.

It's not "too late".

🐾 You can still teach your dog the basics like critical thinking, problem-solving, and impulse control.

🐾 You can help them become more confident and emotionally healthy.

🐾 You can show the world that your dog IS the good dog that you know he can be.

And....I just want you to know that you are being SO BRAVE for looking for help.

Your dog is so lucky to have you!

Every dog owner should know this one thing…

…in order to ensure their dog is successful.

Learning to read your dog’s body language is CRUCIAL!

Hold on, I know what you’re thinking…

“I’ve had my dogs my whole life. I know how to read dog body language.”

I thought the same thing before I became a dog trainer. And I missed some very obvious behaviors between two of my dogs.

Had I known the intricacies of body language, I could’ve prevented them from trying to kill each other.

I PROMISE you will learn something in our Decoding Caning Conversations workshop.

That’s right!

We’re hosting a workshop and it will be a FUNDRAISER for a dog named Major with Friends of Animals. He had a mass growing on his shoulder and his leg had to be amputated.

100% of the funds raised from this workshop will go towards his medical care.

Here’s What the Workshop looks like:

- we will break down each aspect of dog body language piece by piece.

- we will analyze videos of dogs communicating so you can see it in real time.

- what to do when you see concerning communication.

- Q&A where you get all of your questions answered!

- Recording of the workshop will be sent out to all participants 24 hours after the workshop

🧠 Dogs Aren’t Robots – They Have Brains🧠

If you’ve ever been frustrated because your dog doesn’t “obey”, take a deep breath and remember – your dog isn’t a robot.

They’re a living, breathing, thinking being with a brain that deserves respect and understanding.

At Common Scents Dog Training, we believe in a different approach to dog training. We focus on the psychology behind your dog’s behavior. It’s not just about teaching commands; it’s about understanding *why* your dog reacts the way they do. Whether your dog is aggressive, reactive, or fearful, there’s always a reason behind it – and that’s where true training begins.

We’re not just here to make your dog sit or stay. (Sure, that’s all part of the fun.) We’re here to help them think, feel, and trust.

This is the foundation of real, lasting change.

Join our Canine Revolution program today and start transforming your relationship with your dog for just $19/month.

You’ll get access to pre-recorded videos, live support from a certified trainer, and monthly workshops designed to tackle the toughest issues – all from the comfort of your home.

Because your dog deserves more than robotic obedience.

They deserve to be understood. 💙

This has been eating at me lately…

I recently spoke with someone on the phone who was dealing with some pretty extreme behaviors from her dog.

The dog was reactive, aggressive, and quite frankly - a liability.

The owner had looked at TikTok and researched methods to use.
But the different opinions were exhausting to search through.

She did everything she could on her own before calling me.

She was almost in tears because she couldn’t afford training for her dog and she knew his life was on the line here.

I always help these clients in some way or another, whether that be our online course or free sessions. Because I do this for the love of the dogs.

But it got me thinking….

If dog training is so vital for a dog’s success in life, why do dog trainers make getting help so difficult?

After brainstorming how I could be part of the solution to this problem, I figured out a way to make dog training more accessible to people.

We are officially introducing The Canine Revolution.

This program will REPLACE our group classes.
That’s right. No more group classes (more on that later!)

Here’s what it looks like:
- Everything you need to know to turn your dog into the dog of your dreams.
- Everything you need to know to help reactive/aggressive dogs .
- Weekly Live Training Session + Q&A where you can watch me train dogs and I’ll be answering all of your questions.
- Office hours where you can get help from a certified trainer one-on-one
- Monthly Workshops
- Community of other dog owners for support
- Monthly Case Reviews where we analyze a case together

This is easily worth hundreds of dollars in the dog training world.
But we are revolutionizing the dog training industry.

The first 20 members will get ALLLL of this for only $19/month.
After the first 20 members, the price will go up to $39/month

Insane right?
We know.

Look, I don't want you to have an "obedient" dog.

I know that sounds crazy coming from a dog trainer, but hear me out.

I don't care if your dog can do Rally or pass a Canine Good Citizen test.

My wish for every dog owner is this:
I want you to have an incredible bond with your dog.

✨ Imagine understanding how your dog's brain works and what they're thinking.
✨ Imagine seeing the as a capable being instead of a robot.
✨ Imagine finally being able to speak your dog's language.
✨ Imagine them fitting into your lifestyle and routine flawlessly.

And I know what you're thinking...
"But I already HAVE a bond with my dog."

My client, Jennifer, said the same thing:
"What I didn't expect was how much FUN training would be and was amazed at how much training would strengthen my bond with Murphy, even though I'd had her for 5 years."
You prioritize socializing your dog.
You prioritize exercising your dog.
You prioritize playing with your dog.

But have you prioritized giving your dog an opportunity to work their brain and to LEARN?

Teaching a dog (or even a child) something makes you bond with them on a totally different level.

Like wild-eyed Garth here.
He's not my dog (yet). But I'm his favorite human.
(He's my boyfriend's dog and I love rubbing this in his face every chance I can - even in a business post. 😘)

If you would like to learn more about how our program helps you bond with your dog more, comment "BOND" and I will shoot you a message!

Have you ever dreaded the 4th of July because your fur baby is terrified of fireworks? I know exactly how you feel. My dog, Frannie, used to be so scared that we couldn't even enjoy the holiday.

But everything changed when we found the right training.

Imagine this....

Instead of hiding and trembling at every boom, your dog is calm and maybe even curious about the lights in the sky.

Instead of staying home to comfort them, you can actually enjoy the festivities with your family and friends, knowing your pup is happy and safe.

I used to decline every party invitation and felt guilty leaving Frannie alone. But after dedicated training, the transformation in her behavior was incredible, and it brought so much peace to our lives.

If you’re tired of the stress and heartache, there’s hope! With the right approach, you can help your dog overcome their fear and create a more joyful, stress-free experience for both of you.

Want to learn how? I’m hosting a FREE workshop to share the methods that worked wonders for us. You’ll discover:

- Effective ways to manage fear and anxiety
- Tools that can help your dog feel safe
- Techniques to rewire their brain and change their response to fireworks

📅 Date: June 5th, 2024
⏰ Time: 7:00pm Central
📍 Where: Zoom (Recording available if you can't make it live)

Sign up now and start your journey towards a happier, calmer 4th of July!
