Juniper came to us with very mild reactivity, a classic case of Lunging, barking, and growling at dogs passing by.

Her owner was at a loss for what to do moving forward. Her and Juniper regularly attended an indoor positive reinforcement dog training gym, and a Victoria Stilwell certified doggy daycare but over the passing months their real world was getting smaller and smaller.

10 Days.
Clear understanding of Punishment.
Consistent and Encouraging Negative Reinforcement.
Enthusiastic Games of Interactive Play.

No Treat Pouch.
No Hands in Pockets.
No Luring.

That’s all it took.

Lupa Dog was not necessarily a dog I planned on getting.

A friend of mine said they couldn’t handle her, too much energy, too crazy, tough to train. If I wanted her well then I could take her.

Just me, Teresa, and this crack head dog in a 640 square foot apartment.

She ate our blinds, broke through kennels, barked at the neighbors, caught neighborhood cats by their skulls (I had to pry them out of her mouth on multiple occasions). But she loved a ball and she was always ready to do anything.

Long story short she forced me to learn how to train, she made me want to do better by her. Heeling, place, sits and downs, long games of fetch and tug in the field. Mispronouncing French commands, Circus tricks, snuggles, teaching her to search for my keys. Lots of hours spent in the mud and rain and cold, Lupa didn’t care and she needed work and play.

I didn’t know she would spark so much.

5 years later and she’s an integral part of how I help dogs. Our Puppy Patrol. The mama dog and teacher for all the board and trains that come and go. Without her bare knuckle dog training would’ve never existed.

Not really sure if we can thank her for everything, but Teresa and I will keep throwing her ball and sharing our pizza crusts till we can’t thank her anymore. 💕

Katelyn is a phenomenal trainer, she took all of my guidance incredibly well and put our plan into action like a rockstar.
I certainly won’t take credit for her awesome hard work! I’m glad she took a chance on my coaching program and that I was able to provide her with a chance to make meaningful change for the dogs she works with.
Katelyn is going to help a lot of dogs and their owners, and her clients are very lucky to have her.

Negative Reinforcement or “Escape- Avoidance” training. “The process of negative reinforcement typically involves the removal, reduction, postponement, or Prevention of stimulation; these operations strengthen the response on which they are contingent.” Time Criteria, it REALLY matters when we wish to get to the “Postponement and Prevention” part of negative reinforcement. Without it there is zero agency, you cannot build success and the training will lack the capacity to build a dog’s resilience to stressors. Time criteria and contingency to target behavior are keys to success when using aversives.

Uninvited on leash greetings are something trainers LOVE to complain about and make into a big deal. Although they can be a bit messy and annoying, it’s not the end of the world.

It also exposed a flaw within Oscar’s current training program, which I’m grateful for! We’ll be moving onto generalizing “Go say Hi!” to people and not just dogs.

The rest of Oscars walk at the festival was really great and I am proud to say that he is no longer working through any reactivity.

An oldie but a goodie!

Toggy Doggy trained with us a while back and I am so proud of him and his owners, they put 110% into learning during our private lessons and it really really shows.

I think it’s safe to say that Togg is definitely living his best good boy life post training!

I didn’t directly address Lion Kings reactivity.

He just stopped doing it.

There was no “reactivity protocol” for this dog in particular. The environment was conducive to the growth of healthy behaviors.

This is why I don’t recommend large doggy day cares, or even free roaming the home while owners are gone. In these situations the environment cannot be catered to fostering healthy habits.

If you don’t want your dog practicing excessive barking, don’t take them places where dogs are constantly barking. Don’t allow them to free roam the house while you are gone to practice barking out the window at people cars and dogs that pass by.

If you want your puppy to have good potty habits, create an environment and a schedule where they can practice going to the bathroom outside. Don’t leave them outside without supervision just hoping they’ll go to the bathroom.

If you want your dog to recall properly when you call them, don’t allow them to run outside without supervision or some way to bring them back, a long line or some other tool.

It is simple. We are human beings who are largely in control of our dogs environments, if the dog is displaying unwanted behaviors take a look at the environment you have created for your dog and ask yourself, “What is this environment telling my dog he should be doing?”
