Who remembers seeing the story? Honestly, I read this, and my heart immediately hoped the family would reach out to us for training! And guess what, THEY DID.

Cash’s family and I had had ONE private lesson. We talked about Cash‘s history, the recent experience with feeling the need to rehome because it wasn’t safe and they didn’t know what else to do, and their devotion to working with him to get him in a place where he was successful. They were ready to put in the work. You could see the pain from their choice to surrender. You could feel the love they have for Cash and I could see how much Cash loves his family.

A main issue was resource guarding, which resulted in biting. He would also bite when attempting to put on a harness. They were unable to get him on a leash to walk him to take him to vet appointment. He was unhappy with something and would react with nipping/biting while on the furniture with his family. Many times, unprovoked.

Dogs use physical pressure (lunging, snapping, nipping, biting) to push you/things they are fearful/don’t like away. Usually it works!

During our session we discussed the importance of boundaries, that they are NOT punishment but a great way to be clear about expectations. Let’s make sure Cash knows the rules of the house. What is acceptable and what will absolutely not be tolerated. Boundaries allow you to prevent unwanted behaviors, instead of giving your dog a chance to react and then struggling to find a way to correct the behavior. First up, couch time is a privilege and if Cash can’t handle that, we don’t have it!

We traded out Cash’s harness for a slip leash. We worked with high value treats and taught Cash there was a positive outcome when he “leashed up”. She worked on looking for physical cues and how to address them before a reaction happened. Using the leash to guide Cash to do things we wanted and pairing that action with a command, like “Off”. We discussed having more positive communication with Cash, so he understood when he was making a great choice.

Fast forward to a week later. Look at the text I received from Cash’s mom. My heart could exploded.

I wanted to let you know Cash is doing great with the slip leash!! Got it Tuesday and have been working with him a couple times a day. He's been enjoying going for some short walks with Don. We haven't had any problems with him as far as biting. I think he'd do anything for a chicken chip! Just want to tell you thank you again for your help.
