The hardest work always happens on the hottest days of the year! But the summer garden is officially down (except for the Lima beans), raised beds are turned and covered, and the chicken tractors have moved to their new homes.
The hardest work always happens on the hottest days of the year. This weekend was a huge work weekend for us on the homestead. Knowing there is a tropical storm probably heading our way reminded us that we are in the peak of hurricane season and work has to happen if we want to be ready for fall planting. All it takes is one storm to set us back so this way, we are prepared. The summer garden is completely dismantled (except the Lima beans which are just now in bloom), the raised beds have been turned and covered, and the chicken tractors are in their new homes for the next year. Our main garden has hit the 7 year mark and will be resting until fall of next year so it can replenish the nutrients it needs to be fruitful again. It will become a temporary home to the meat birds and some of the laying hens. Happy to have this phase of break down behind us!!
And then I walked away for 5 minutes and she was out by the time I came back again. No keeping her in
Freedom again…fencing had to come down for tree removal and they have been “cooped” up for too long (at least I’m sure that is what they would say).
Nothing goes to waste…

2023 is completely in the ground!!
Spring/Summer Garden 2023
Chickens are helping break down the winter garden in preparation for spring! #happychickens
It’s always sad when the broccoli doesn’t produce well enough for us to eat but on the bright side, it is feeding our bees and that is a major win in our book!
Well…not great news but we move on thankful for another day! Crazy thing is it will be in the 70’s by the weekend…
29 degrees!!! It’s like a heat wave!!!
Still cold but the sun is shining and a slight warm up is on the way!
Still frozen 🥶 This should be the last day of below freezing during the day. Perhaps Tuesday morning we will get to uncover the veggies and see how they fared. Days like this I really wish we had a greenhouse!

10:00 and still literally frozen!
Hopeful that this will give the crops a fighting chance over the next 2 days. Here in the Lowcountry of SC we aren’t used to 0 degree wind chills!!!
American Bresse…will these be our new meat birds?
Don’t let the milk go bad…the chickens love to have milk mixed with some feed as a treat.
Looks like the bees needed a little extra room to call home 🐝
This never gets old 🐣 🐣🐣🐣
