Our mascot “Bowie the Farm Cat” here at The Matthews Family Artisanal Farm!!! She arrived in May of 2021 when she was a little kitty probably somewhere around 6 months old possibly a little older but definitely under a year old!
She has a job and that is of course vermin/rodent/unwelcome farm invaders exterminator! At which she has absolutely exceeded all expectations! She of course devours the mice she encounters! To the dismay of my father the birds need to be on high alert at the bird feeders now! She even takes down the occasional groundhog, mole, vole, squirrel and most surprisingly full grown rabbits!!! She devours them all, drags the larger kills to the woodpile to store for feasting at a latter date!!! Bones and all she gobbles up all of her kills, wasting not a single bit!!! It’s quite something watching your cute little kitty cat chomp, crush and devour an entire rabbits leg including the rabbits foot!!! The little maniac even stalks herds of wild turkeys chasing them off and having to rescue the crazy little thing from pouncing on a skunk!!! I’ve had to on three separate occasions run out and scream for her which makes her stop and look towards me which usually gives the skunk the opportunity to scamper away! However one time over the summer while I was able to protect her I myself received an indirect dusting of skunk spray!!!
Could not of asked for a better farm mascot, coworker, roommate, companion but definitely not my pet! I do not own her, she chooses to live here, it was her decision and let me tell you I could not be happier with her decision and the vermin population has greatly decreased and even the larger invaders she does her best to keep the homestead safe and the crops guarded!!!

This week due to an abundance of tomatoes in our garden and peaches from our tree, I made bruschetta in a jar, and Peppery Pear Summer Salsa! I will have them available at The Market on the Grand in Grand Ledge this Saturday along with all my other regular jams and jellies!

I will actually be doing buy one get one half off specials this Saturday in honor of the one year anniversary of starting this adventure in creating artisanal unique preserves, sauces and more!!! Which now means I preserved my first jar of jam I made myself or helped make for that matter a year and one week ago! Thanks for the support this first year to everyone who has tried my creations and helping build a foundation. A foundation for my soon to be world famous jams! Especially The Blazing Tropics, I may be biased but in my opinion it’s the best jam out there and will someday(soon) the world will wise up to this fact as well!!!

I made a batch of Carrot Cake Jam tonight for the Market on the Grand in Heamd Ledge tomorrow. Also I made some spicy zucchini relish I will have available at the farmers market tomorrow as well!

The Hot Pepper Stronghold!!! 120 Habanero Plants, 44 plants of varieties of the super hot chili peppers!!!!

10/08/2021

So turns out that when I ordered pepper seeds this spring I was mistakenly sent a variety pack of the super hot chili pepper seeds instead of peach habanero seeds. So I have 44 plants growing that are a mixture of ghost, scorpion and Carolina reaper peppers!!! I am estimating that I will end up harvesting over 150 pounds of these peppers this season!!! If you are interested or know anyone who would be get a hold of me on Facebook or come to The Grand Ledge Market on the Grand I have a booth every Saturday! I am most likely going to dehydrate them and make them into powders but if you want fresh ones I’ll have them available the rest of the season!!!

Here at the Matthews Family Farm propagation of nearly 1200 plus habanero plants has begun. Over half of our habanero production will go directly towards the production of Speedy Hank’s Signatures, our product line of habanero pepper products. Starring our soon to be famous Habanero infused fruit Jams & Jellies, including the original, Blazing Tropics Jam! I have decided to create three variations of this delicious tropical fruit jam with an attitude. Those variations will be created by adding more habaneros into the recipe that will increase the heat intensity. Those variations will be called Siren Song which will be the original recipe that introduces you to the flavor and heat of habanero peppers and will keep you coming back for more, in my opinion anyone can handle this level of spice! You’ll definitely feel a little tingle but the flavor profile is so complex and beautiful it’s just a note in the beautiful symphony that is this recipe. Next is Flamethrower, which may be more of a required taste for those of us who enjoy a gentle kick in the teeth of spice and heat. Finally Dragon Forged, this is definitely for those of us who enjoy a little pain and torture in our lives, this heat level with wake you up better than coffee any day and will make your brow sweat, your lips, tongue & nose tingle. It most definitely is deserving of a name like Dragon Forged.

We look forward to bringing the wonderful taste and wonderful heat of habanero peppers to The world. Our goal is to create a product line that can introduce the wonderful flavor of habaneros to everyone, but we also will have something for those who like their food to have aome attitude and don’t mind burning off a few taste buds with their meals!!!

We look forward to our first full year of production on The Matthews Family Farm in Michigan and hope the world is ready for the flavors, the heat and the experience of Speedy Hank’s Signature Habanero Products!!!

So I have spend the last 48 hours drying my habaneros in the oven but learnt from my first attempt that the last 5-10% of water weight creates a fine line between perfection and being Santa’s personal charcoal maker!!! So let’s see how letting them air dry on the rack works. Making Habanero Flakes and Habanero powder once these babies decide to dry out!!! Everything is trial and error this year see what works best and what doesn’t work!!! At the end of the day I am enjoying this process and finding creative work arounds to problems I’ve never faced before!!! I love creating something from plants that I grew and cared for and fretted about over this last summer and then seeing people try my creations and enjoy them is a darn good feeling!!!

So whilst I was out on my Sunday doing my part to be the hipster into the name The Hipster Farmer. Showing why I should be anointed Duke of the Hipstershire adding to my empire of antique Aynsley Bone China Teacups, back at the Matthews Family Compound Mama Bear Janice whipped up another batch of 16 oz jars of Speedy Hank’s Habanero Cherry Tomato Jams!!!! What a team player putting the family in small family farming!!! So let us know if you’d like to enjoy the fruits of our families labor!!! We just had grilled cheeses for dinner and Ooo my, Ooo my this sweet and spicy jam made them the best damn grilled cheeses we’ve had! Also great on burgers, as a pizza sauce pretty much anything you can think to put ketchup on or any meal that calls for a tomato based condiment/sauce can be replaced with this stroke of genius! Hands down makes any meal 10 times better! Contact us to take home your 16oz jar of deliciousness preserved today for only $10! You have been warned you’ll never go back to boring old ketchup or plain Jane tomato sauce! However that’s ok because it’s a staple of the line up we present and will not be going anywhere, actually of anything next year when The Matthews Family Farm ramps up to full production we will only have more than exciting and perfected jams to offer our valued customers!!! Get excited because The Hipster Farmers family can’t wait to share our passion for producing small batch artisanal Habanero products with the public!!!

A little night time harvesting...

09/09/2020

Habaneros are some thirsty, thirsty plants, roughly requiring more than 2.5 inches of rain week meant a lot of time this summer out there under the brutal sun working on my tan!!! However the end of this summer has been the exact opposite! Man oooo man the late summer rains here in Michigan have given me time to w**d, refine, trim up the entire selection of plants and veggie the family garden!

Let me tell you this, I maybe green behind the ears but my instincts are spot on so far for what tender love and care these plants require!!! Managed to bring back new bunches of zucchini’s, saved the Roma Tomato Plants from the brink and nursed Habanero Bravo Patch from as slow and unfruitful start to producing good looking peppers and healthy looking bunch of plants!

I write this on another late summer morning where Mother Nature is doing my morning chore of watering the peppers! Always a lovely treat to hear the rain in the morning! Going to give me the time I need to slice and pickle a couple pounds of these gorgeous peppers!!!
