If you are feeding grain free to your pups without knowing if they truly have a grain allergy, please reach out to us to discuss options. We have a lot of experience providing alternative options for dogs with skin issues....diet, supplements, and shampoos. Just because a food is expensive doesn't mean it's good. Nutrition also plays a key role in dog behavior.

Yesterday we had two wonderful Golden Retrievers, ages 6 and 2, come in for elective surgical procedures. Both dogs had a history of eating a well-known and popular grain free diet for several years. In one dog, an arrhythmia (irregular heart beat) was detected so an x-ray of his chest was taken. His heart was enlarged, so an echocardiogram was scheduled for that afternoon. An x-ray was also taken of the other dog's chest as a precaution, and his heart was also enlarged. He was able to get an echocardiogram same day, as well.

The reports on both dogs just came back, and both of these gorgeous, otherwise perfectly healthy dogs have Dilated Cardiomyopathy. The cardiologist suspects that in both cases it is related to their diet. Thankfully, this condition was caught early, and when fed a traditional diet, their condition should hopefully reverse. Their cases are being reported to the FDA, along with the thousands of others from across the country.

There is no evidence to support feeding grain-free. Most pet allergies are related to environment (pollens, etc) or protein sources. Grain allergies account for a tiny fraction of all food allergies in dogs. Unfortunately, many dogs are becoming very ill or even dying from eating so-called "BEG" diets (boutique, exotic, grain-free), and the terrible thing is nutritionally mediated dilated cardiomyopathy is 100% preventable. There have been zero reported cases of NMDCM in dogs eating foods that meet WSAVA guidelines, currently made by Purina, Hill's, Iams/Eukanuba, or Royal Canin. We strongly suggest if you are feeding a "BEG" diet that you change your dog over to one of the brands listed above. If you have any questions specifically related to your pet, please call us.

We are so hopeful we caught this disease in time for our two beautiful patients to reverse their disease. Their very caring and dedicated owners have already changed their diet to one that meets WSAVA criteria. The articles below will help explain this disease, WSAVA guidelines, and why grain-free was more marketing than science.

This is one of the things I enforce during training. Your dog should never be front and center during greetings. Always at your side or behind you so you can control the greeting. Most dogs want to get to know the person that is trying to interact with them first. They are very put off with a hand going in their face right off the bat. Some dogs are just overly excited and ready to jump all over the place or slam into the greeter. That can be a safety hazard. You must be your dog's advocate and set the boundaries for them and the greeter. If you don't want to allow an interaction, then don't. If it's not safe to allow an interaction, then don't. And if you are the person trying to greet a dog, you need to be respectful of the owner's wishes and their space. Always ask if it's ok first, and then follow up with "how does your dog like to be approached?" if interaction is allowed. It will make for a more positive experience for everyone.

I was trying to avoid this but I can't do so any longer... I have pulled every dollar... every penny... from everywhere I possibly can and I just am not able to make our payments at this time... on anything...

I haven't been asking for preventative sponsors & have been covering them... I haven't been asking for our $5 Friday donations for dog food & have been covering it... I haven't been asking for donations for medications & have been covering them...

Our yard sale covered our overdue (monthly) Scratchpay payments for Keelo's emergency obstruction surgery from April and bought treats, some food & a few medications... & it's gone :(

We have several things past due right now & so many things coming due next week & I am at a total loss...

Our Bingo is scheduled for June 2nd and we only have 34 tickets reserved... at this rate, we will have to cancel it if ticket reservations don't skyrocket within the next 5 days :( And our Bingos are our biggest fundraisers.

What I am asking now (and I'm doing it before $5 Friday starts because I have to work tomorrow) is for your love & support once again... I have been so stressed with the yard sale, everything that is due & trying to keep up with all rescue & tax paperwork that I have not been feeling well for almost three weeks now (stress-related)... my migraines are back, I am nauseous 75% of the time... I can't sleep... I need a little relief... I need to feel well enough & stop stressing long enough to get things caught up & on-track... but I need YOUR help to do that

Zara popping in to make sure you haven’t forgotten about her! 🥺

Thursday will make it four months that she’s been in our care, with only one meet and greet to show for it. She is professionally trained (completed a 4-week board and train) and has been raised by her fosters since she was only four weeks old. We are so desperate to see her find her own family, just like her three siblings did.

*adopted

Willie ACCT-A-163135 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. Willie must have confirmed placement with an ADOPTER OR RESCUE PARTNER by Friday May 24th at 10 A.M. Should Willie's medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change.

Cute Willie is an approximately 2 year old 30 pound mixed breed guy that came into the shelter as a stray. One of our Animal Protection Officers found little Willie at a bus stop extremely emaciated and covered in fleas. He said that Willie was terrified, but warmed up and allowed the officer to leash him and carry him to the truck. Willie was so hungry and banged up, but still took treats gently and never had a mean bone in his body.

When Willie got back to the shelter, he climbed into the officer's lap and wanted to snuggle. The staff were immediately smitten with him and he seemed so relieved to be in a safe place.

Since being here, Willie has made numerous friends and has become a staff favorite. This is what some of the staff and volunteers had to say about Willie:

Per staff on 4/30:
"In the room Willie was sweet towards both handlers. He explored the room with soft eyes and low wags. He was a bit timid but would come up to both of us soliciting attention and would lean in while petting him, but would flinch if we moved too fast. He was very gentle with treats and showed knowledge of sit as well.Tried to say hi to people he passed while on leash

Per volunteer on 5/4:
"Such a sweet and shy boy! No issues getting leashed from his kennel. He was skittish and hesitant with the loud sounds of the city outside. When a loud engine went by or honking, he would get closer to me and look to me for comfort. Very handler oriented boy who could use some confidence! Sat close to me and took pets all over, leaning into me when I was petting him. Very skinny boy but took treats super gently - really loves treats! Nice leash skills, pretty calm for a young pup. Sweetie boy!

Per staff on 5/6:
"Willie is such a shy but sweet boy. APOs brought him by my office so I could meet him; he sat snuggled up to the officer on the floor, allowing gentle handling with no issues. He took treats from me eagerly. With the first treat he was a bit grabby, but after that he took them gently. He is a TINY dog, not only because he is underweight, but also just small in stature. At this time he benefits from a slow approach, and would likely prefer a quiet household and decompression.

Per staff on 5/18:
"Willie is one of my favorite boys at the shelter! He is timid but super sweet once he warms up. He is the perfect size and is super portable! What a little ham

Willie has been overlooked by adopters and rescues for his second chance. Could you be the one to help free Willie?

Happy birthday to the OG of K2!! We don't know when your birthday actually is, so we made it the day you first came to us for foster. You obviously stole our hearts. ❤️ You are my best friend, my ride or die, my mini me in dog form, and the one all the other dogs look "up" to. You may be small, but you have the grandest heart and personality. We love you so much Kiwi 🥝 ❤️💕❤️. She got to pick out her own treat at the store today and carried it proudly to the checkout to buy. She really is the best!

Our baby girl Zara!!!!! She is the best puppy, how does she not have a home yet?! In all seriousness, if I was in the market for another dog, I would adopt her.....and that's saying something because puppies can be crazy and I don't have time for that. 🤣🤣. She is really a sweetheart. Please share to help her find a forever home. 🙏. I'm happy to help with the transition or introductions. And if you want to continue her training, we'd be happy work with you! ❤️

Zara continues to get overlooked 💔

With us since she was 4 weeks old, Zara is now 19 weeks old and still without a family to call her own. She’s watched the rest of her siblings join loving homes. She’s been through a 4-week board and train and perfected her obedience skills and gained confidence and social skills.

She’s had a meet and greet or two, and they’ve helped us learn exactly what kind of home is best for her. She likes the dogs she’s grown up with in foster care and did great with the trainer’s dogs. She’s intimidated when meeting new dogs and would need slow and supervised meetings with any resident dogs in the home. We feel she'd do best with doggie siblings her size (30 lbs) or larger who are on the lower-medium energy side. She’d also do wonderful as the only dog in the home and wouldn’t mind having her human’s full attention to herself. She has lived with cats and older kids and done great with them.

We know Zara’s perfect home is out there, we just haven’t found them yet! 🏡

It's been a year and a day since this little boy came to us. I remember him glued to the back of his crate, shaking in fear. We took him outside to potty and he hid under my air conditioning unit. The growth he has made in a year is amazing. When this once feral boy lets you into his circle, his love and quirkiness is endless. He LOVES to snuggle on the couch, he loves to play, and he loves to be goofy. He is still available for adoption. ❤️. Who doesn't love this cute little face??

There are some dogs that we work with that touch our hearts so deeply and we fall head over heels in love with them. ❤️❤️ Zara was one of those dogs.

Today was bittersweet as Zara finished her Board and Train with us and returned to her foster. She has made amazing progress and is on her path to being the best puppy she can be. We will miss her so very much! Her snuggles, the way she gazed lovingly into your soul, her puppy antics, and her desire to want to learn and please. Sadly, the rest of her litter was adopted and no apps for her. I may have cried a little on the way to return her, but I was relieved to see that she remembered her foster family and was over the moon to see them again! The reunion was so heartwarming. ❤️. In all honesty, if I had the space I absolutely would have adopted her myself! I can't believe she hasn't been scooped up yet!!

A video of her skills is coming soon, but for now, please enjoy this absolutely adorable picture taken while on one of her walks. She is still available for adoption through Nirvana Animal Rescue.

We haven't posted about Ranger in a while, but today he went for walkies with his big foster bro, Calvin. This was a HUGE accomplishment for him, because he is terrified to leave the house....well anything outside of the yard. He always has his tail tucked and is darting or hiding. Today, Calvin gave him the confidence to walk on a loose leash and no tail tucking. He was watchful of everything, but not reactive (except for cars, he did hide behind me for those). He actually seemed to enjoy it!!! One more milestone for Ranger! ❤️❤️

09/04/2024

We always start our first meeting as an educational session for the owner. It focuses on routines, leadership, communication, and the environment. This is the foundation we build on. If you can't make the simple changes we talk about in that session, your training will be harder or even unsuccessful.

I get a lot of excuses as to why an owner can't do something. My response is...... having a dog takes effort and isn't easy no matter which way you look at it. You have to decide which level of hard you want......do you want to make small changes in your routines and actions and have a dog that will behave well? Or do you want to continue with the status quo and have a dog you are fighting all the time?

You also won't see the progress you want when you don't put in the effort between sessions. Your dog is supposed to listen and behave for you. Having me train them once a week or every 2 weeks is not going to make that happen. My training contract is clear....if you do not follow the recommendations of your trainer, or complete the homework, your desired outcomes will not be achieved. Please don't expect overnight results or for us to waive a magic wand. YOU have to put in the work.... starting with yourself.

We are blessed if you choose us to help you get there. 😊

Owners, once you truly get that nothing changes with your dog until you change, you’ll be prepared for reality. Whether that be transforming yourself and your dog, or settling for the status quo with both of you—at least you will know precisely where you stand and also precisely what to expect.

Trainers, once you truly get that nothing you can do with a dog will actually change the dog unless its owners change, you’ll also be prepared for reality. Whether that be letting go of unrealistic expectations (and the frustration/resentment that goes with) for the undetermined, or falsely feeling like Superman/Superwoman because of what you’re capable of achieving with the dog—at least you’ll know precisely where you stand and what to expect.

If both owners and trainers agree to work within the framework of reality and the obviously observable dynamics between owner and dog—or environment and dog—then both parties can approach this dog training enterprise with clarity and healthy expectations. Which would save much disappointment, resentment, and heartache on both sides.

The upshot? Owners, unless you’re truly prepared to change whatever is required to change your dog, it’s best that you save your time, money, and hopes. Trainers, unless your owners are truly prepared to change whatever is required to change their dog (this is your job to suss out), then please save them their time, money, and hopes—and on the way you’ll save your well-being and avoid much of the emotional burnout that derails so many.

I just heard that this little nugget doesn't have any applications for her!!! 😳😳. We absolutely love her and know that she will make an amazing addition to a family out there waiting for a dog like her. She is fantastic with kids, good with kitties, loves playing with other dogs, and is super in tune to her humans' emotions. She's very smart and picks things up pretty quickly for a pup her age.

Zara will be with us for her Board and Train program until 4/21. Will she go back to her foster or will she have a forever family? Let's try to get the word out so this little ball of sweetness can go to a forever family!! ❤️❤️

Zara had some outings this week and this is a video of one of her first ones. You may ask......what am I watching, and what is so special about what she's doing? Zara is 14 weeks in this video. For a puppy, their attention span is that of a gnat. 😂 We are teaching Zara to be calm in her surroundings, not bark or be crazy, and to be more interested in her handler than everything going on around her. It doesn't mean she can't look, it just means that she should be checking in with her handler for feedback and direction regularly. We are also working on building her confidence around new people. Zara was a little scared of new people at first, and didn't react the best, but with the work we've been doing she's gaining more confidence and is more open to interactions. You may also ask, why the stroller? Because Zara is so young, we want to protect her from unwanted germs, and this helps to set her up for success. By limiting her distractions and ability to go after them as she pleases, it helps her understand the expectations better and builds a strong foundation for when she is ready to walk around on her own. She's been also still learning how to walk on a leash and we don't want to overload her.

Zara is making great progress in her training and she will make an amazing companion. Fun fact.....she is very in tune with her people's emotions and is there to comfort at the perfect times. ❤️❤️

What you need to know about a Malinois:

They are confident, loyal, smart and hardworking. They create unbreakable bonds with their human partner. To deny a Mal activity and the pleasure of your company is to deprive them of their very reasons for being. Problems set in, though, when this people-oriented dog is underemployed and neglected. They require exercise, and plenty of it, preferably side by side with their adored owner. They have a need to be actively engaged with their owner, both mentally and physically. This is not a dog who can be left in the backyard, and daily walks are not enough, either. Malinois make great running, hiking, and biking companions, and they excel at agility, tracking, herding, obedience, and Schutzhund (protection) competitions. Malinois have a high prey drive and are strongly interested in moving objects. This trait can lead to chasing children, vehicles, or other animals and so should be directed into acceptable activities through training. The Malinois is considered to be a very vocal dog breed. In other words, they'll bark a lot — sometimes without reason!

Ramona is a German Shepherd/Malinois mix……but most of her personality is Mal. Breed experience is highly preferred and encouraged for her new family. We would like to find Ramona a home before the beginning of May due to commitments that we have here at K2, but the sooner the better. While we have the capacity to provide for her health needs, we do not have the ability to meet all her mental and physical needs. Because of this, Ramona unfortunately is displaying a lot of typical unwanted behaviors, and it is creating a lot of stress for her and the other occupants of the household (human and critters). We love her dearly and want the absolute best for her. We know that her family is out there for her and are ready to take on the commitment. Ramona is not your average pet, so please be sure that you do your research and are ready to commit to her needs before completing an application. She is an absolute gem and her bond will be unmatched. She loves human affection, and we are confident with the right amount of activity she will be a very fulfilled pooch. She is good with kids, properly matched dogs, and doesn’t seem to be bothered too much by caged pets (we have a bird that she couldn’t care less about). Cats are on a case by case basis. Please help us share the word so Ramona can find her forever family.

Calvin is such a good sport and teacher!! 🤣 We wanted to share this video of Zara with clarification. While we always recommend providing separate feeding areas for your pups (even if there is no food aggression), we are working with Zara specifically on food aggression concerns. We can confidently say, those have been extinguished! Zara is rocking it at her Board and Train!!!

During her first week, we were helping her understand expectations and boundaries when it comes to food, bones, play time, and general manners. All the concerns she came with are now in the past and we are focusing on teaching her how to be the best puppy she can be. Which she's already amazing I might add. Seriously......if I were in the market to add to my zoo, Zara would be staying!! She is the best puppy and will make an amazing companion for the right family. ❤️🥰❤️

Zara has been learning skills such as Sit, Focus, Orienting when called, Walking on leash, and Leave It this past week. Aside from those skills that are strictly verbal, we always start with hand cues and body language. Why? Because dogs don't understand English until it is taught to them. Dogs communicate through body language, so we work with them in ways they best understand before introducing a foreign language. She is super smart and quite the cuddler. 🥰. She is available for adoption through Nirvana Animal Rescue.
