While an attention walk with your dog looking responsibly up at you is a great ideal, it takes time and a lot of practice. Many of us get a new puppy and think we need to start walks right away. This may sound crazy to you, but wait. Walks are NOT necessary at such a young age.



First we need to teach our puppy what a leash is, let alone how to navigate with one on. We start taking a few steps, getting our puppy to follow us and rewarding them for doing so. Walking backwards in the beginning can help your puppy stay focused on you.



The next step is to pick up the leash and start moving together. We proceed to work as a team, moving from point A to B with no care about where we end up. We only start destination walks (around the block, to the park and back) when our puppy has the skills needed to be successful. This often works out well though, because our puppy is not yet vaccinated - so we use that time to teach basic leash skills, then when they are fully immunized, we can start more formal leash training.



A leash, basic flat collar and yummy food rewards is all you need to get started. Begin in your home in a quiet room. Progress to walking in different rooms of your house. Next take it outside on a patio or driveway - free from smelly grass, tempting bark and blowing leaves if possible! You know what I’m talking about don’t you? We teach our dogs to give into the slightest amount of leash tension and review this concept often at the start of every leash training session.



I know it seems like a while before you’ll be out and about going on a walk together but trust me on this one. Put in the time in the beginning doing the small and simple things over and over again. They pay off big time and soon enough you’ll have a dog who walks beautifully on leash.

She said they are absolutely loving the program and have already been singing it's praises and sharing it will many of their family and friends!

Suggestion: If you have a FB group for your puppy families and invite the waiting parents in. Then post asking if anyone has used the Baxter and Bella program. Wait until you see how many have and all the good things they say and it will sell it for you to the upcoming families.

The simple things that make all the difference!

Dogs enjoy having a purpose...a job to do and a reason for doing it as well. Find is a fun game puppies and their people will all enjoy! Basically it’s “Hide N’ Go Seek” for dogs. Here’s how to play:

Choose someone to hide. Make sure they take a yummy treat with them. (Start out easy such as behind a chair in the same room. As your puppy learns the game, move onto harder hiding places. You won’t always need treats as this game is naturally rewarding to your pup, but it’s useful to start out with them.)

Ask your puppy to stay, or hold onto his collar as the person finds a spot to hide.

When the person hiding is ready, release your pup if in a stay, then say, “Find ___________!” in an exciting tone of voice. (At first, you may need to stand next to where the person is or help guide your puppy to the hiding spot. You can also have the person hiding squeak a toy or make a noise to help teach your puppy what to do.)

As soon as your puppy finds the person, mark, “YES!” and have the person give your puppy a treat.

Repeat the game. Choose a new hiding spot each time.

I like to play this game often in different locations. Many breeds LOVE to seek so put them to work and have fun in the process! Incorporating your dog into everyday life and including them in on your daily activities improves their overall behavior. I’d say it’s worth it then, right!? Enjoy!

SO WHY BAXTER AND BELLA and not in class training?
So I have had a lot of breeders tell me that they are asked this question from puppy parents and they just don't really know how to respond. So here I will do my best to help you overcome that question:
1st. There is room for both. They are different and there is no reason that a person can't attend classes for the puppy once they are vaccinated. Or send them to puppy kindergarten
2. Here is the big one. Baxter and Bella trains not only the puppy but the family. The program is just as much about the pup as it is teaching the puppy parent about consistency and follow through.
3. Baxter and Bella allows the puppy parents to start the day they bring the puppy home and gives them all the answers to the questions they have instantly.
4. Puppy classes are often only 1-2x per week and sent home with homework. There is no one to call and no one to help them in those 5 other days or after the 6-8 week class is over. Baxter and Bella has daily learning, online live classes, recording of past classes and they also have one of the most unique features. If they get stuck, they can set up a live video with our trainers to show them what is happening that they just can't seem to solve. They will walk them through it live.
5. Lastly, Baxter and Bella is a lifetime membership. So even if there is something that comes up in 2 or 8 years later they have this amazing membership that they can always come back to. Examples if this: bring home another animal, moving to a new home, sudden change in behavior as they age, having a baby and introducing them to the dog, or even finally having the time to teach them new tricks.
Let me know if you have any other advise to give or questions on helping to talk your new puppy buyers about why Baxter and Bella is not only the most efficient option but the best option!! 💛🐾🐾

What's more, here's a little bit about Laura...

Hi everyone!

My name is Laura Sarvinski and I am so excited to Join the BAXTER and Bella family! I live in Fortuna California with my husband Travis, our 2 dogs Emma (German Shepherd) and Finn (Miniature American Shepherd). We will be welcoming our first child in October as well!

I have been in the dog training world for about 12 years. I started with training and competing in agility with my childhood dog, Blaze and then became a puppy kindergarten instructor in my community. I attended Bergin University of Canine Studies where I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Cynology, the scientific study of domestic canines. After graduating, I began working for Good Dog Service Canines and continue to work with them as a senior dog trainer working with Service Dogs.

I am passionate about dog training and love helping dog owners learn how to work with their dogs and create a strong life long bond.
