Acorns contain a toxic principle called gallotannin. In cows and horses who repeatedly ingest significant amounts, we have seen severe gastrointestinal irritation, depression and kidney damage. Dogs, however, generally do not forage on acorns as livestock do — and even if they do ingest several acorns, it is usually an acute (single) exposure, not a chronic situation. In these cases, we typically only see mild to moderate gastrointestinal upset, which can include vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal discomfort. However, there is also the potential for mechanical irritation (from the sharp fragmented pieces of acorn), and possible obstruction, should a large amount of acorn material become lodged in the GI tract.

🎃👻 **Wildlife-Friendly Halloween Tips!** 🦇🕸️

As you gear up to decorate for spooky season, don't forget to consider our wild neighbors! 🦉🍂 Keep these tips in mind to ensure your Halloween is festive AND safe for wildlife:

1️⃣ **Avoid fake spiderwebs** – These can trap birds, bats, and even small mammals! Opt for eco-friendly alternatives like natural twine or biodegradable decorations.

2️⃣ **Use non-toxic paint & décor** – Stick to wildlife-safe materials for outdoor decorations to prevent harm to critters.

3️⃣ **Pumpkins** – If you choose to paint rather than carve your pumpkin, please keep it indoors and away from any critters who might feast on it. You can also explore nontoxic paint options made with natural ingredients when possible.

4️⃣ **Lighting** – Keep outdoor lighting minimal and avoid flashing lights, which can disorient birds and nocturnal animals.

5️⃣ **Secure decorations** – Ensure any hanging items are fastened tightly so animals don’t get entangled. Avoid decorations with loops or closed circles. Animals can inadvertently put their head through a loop or circle and beome caught.

Let’s keep Halloween fun for us and safe for wildlife! 🍁🎃

Happy October 1st, friends! We’re loving all these beautiful colors. 🍁🐾
