I love Lorcan. She’s an amazing dog with a bright future.

BUT… she’s one of “those” dogs.

-She will never be left loose in the house. She’s extremely destructive.
-She will never choose to go to “place”… she hates it and is extremely advantageous in sneaking off of it.
-She will never be able to freely greet strangers unless she ever stops trying to jump and mouth.
-She will never have free access to furniture because it causes a shift in her behavior (she gets pushy and opportunistic).
-She may never get to a point where she sleeps in bed with me every night. As of now, she gets around 2 nights a week, and even with that she can become greedy.

Lorcan is almost 2 now. She’s sweet and fun and stable. She’s driven, balanced, and motivated. But she’s an advantageous dog. She spots weakness easily and is extremely self-serving.

My other 2 dogs are nothing like this and essentially have 100% freedom in life.

This does not make Lorcan a bad dog, at all. It just makes her a dog who requires more work. She’s a dog who will always require more management on my end. More structure. LOTS more boundaries.

And that’s perfectly okay.

I, her owner and handler, recognize this and keep this regimen up to keep her being the best dog she can be. And I always will.

Take a step back and truly look at yourself and your dog. Would you both benefit from him or her sleeping in the crate at night? Losing a little bit of freedom? Doing longer bouts on “place”? Being on a leash in the house? Restricting resources such as food and toys and treats? Limiting affection to being earned?

It’s perfectly okay if your dog always requires more of this. Dogs are individuals and not all are the “Lassie type” dogs of yesteryear.

But step 1 is acknowledging that. ❤️
