Oh sweet Ezra… My friend’s crazy boy reminds me of another crazy lab I used to have, Hutto. He was as energetic, if not more. From the time he was a puppy I persistently practiced his composure and excitabilty with dogs and people. Both he and Ezra struggled to contain themselves as pups!

Post from June 25, 2021: “Elvis is my third offical board. Though, previously I’ve done multiple “puppy swaps.” The puppy swaps were within a program for service dogs and I often dealt with correcting unwanted behaviors or basic obedience. Additionally, I was asked to do evaluations on the puppies. Now, that I’ve gained knowledge and experience in balanced training for over two years, I’m offering boarding for my clients who are leaving on vacation or just need assistance with training.

With Elvis I didn’t focus on moving forward on training because his owner requested that I just watch and maintain what he already knows. However, I worked with him daily. At least once a day we went to the park for however long it took him to get exhausted (for Elvis he only got tired temporarily). Then throughout the day I reinforced his commands through treats or corrections. We did quite a few structured practices but nothing too intensive. I took him in public a few times as well for structured socialization (ONLY pet friendly locations). I limited the time in public and focused on his down-stays and attentive heel. When not at the park or practicing, he got to play with Captain (my boyfriend’s dog). Captain is learning boundaries and getting socialized which is perfect for Elvis. Elvis has issues with initial greetings with other dogs. He become defensive and over-corrects. Captain, on the other hand, is very pushy and doesn’t understand dog language. Under my observation, they began playing on even ground by the third day… alternating levels with each other, relaxed body signals, mimicking each other’s movements… It took them awhile but they both learned from one another safely. They even shared some interactive toys I bought them. Today, Elvis was brought home and as sad as I was to see him go, I’m so happy to see his improvement. Miss you, Elvis!”

Since then…. Elvis has been working on obedience in public (pet-friendly) settings and advanced obedience at home! Now he can: heel off-leash; place/sit/down/come verbally and with distance; maintain engagement with his handler in public settings, even around dogs, and so much more! Additionally, we have gone to the beach multiple times since he has gained the friendship of Winnie and Captain.

I’ve been working with Peanut for about 5 months. He came recommended to me because of his nipping issue. Additionally, his owners wanted to work on basic obedience. When I made my first visit for our consultation I was met with some very apparent challenges: he was malnourished, sick with parasites, and reactive. He was taken from his mom at 4 weeks, just barely weened off, and rehomed after his previous owners discovered that their 1 year old child was not ready for a pet. This rough start set us up for a rocky journey. My first goal was to make sure he was being treated for the parasites and was getting his shots. Simultaneously, I explained the benefits of kennel training and safe socialization. I noticed he was uncomfortable being touched pretty much anywhere, so I told them to work on rewarding him before he reacted and when getting closer to him. During our first class we began teaching him his name. Unfortunately, another complication came up…He had trouble seeing, smelling, and balancing. He would walk around aimlessly without much energy. From that first class to now he still struggles with sight, smell, and stability, but has made great improvements. Today we worked on long distance recalls and heeling. Still, he has reoccurring issues: sight, smell, and a skin lesion. These past two weeks we have had to work either off-leash inside or without an e-collar, which he prefers over leashes. Though this has been a long process for his family, they are powering through! he is a happy boy that will seemingly do anything for his family (with just a little bit of attitude 🤏🏼) ❤️

Side note: It won’t let me post the videos within this post so it will be separate.
