The dog’s apprentice The dog’s apprentice, is a training style that tailors training communication to each individual dog we come across.

We believe that each dog and owners relationship has something new to teach us in the learning process. We believe that every dog and owner that we encounter will teach us about better, more effective communication between human and dog. Ryan Unak, the head trainer at The Dog’s Apprentice, started his education with dogs in competition protection sports. He then apprenticed under a master trainer specializing in behavior modification and fear based aggression.

Every day is a training opportunity when training is an extension of play and simply being with you. Hanging out on Pearl Street with my up and coming competition dog Space Monkey working under distractions.

The use of tools for training dogs come in many shapes and sizes. The use of healing sticks are a tool to fine tune competition level healing but can also be a valuable tool to teach pet heeling as well. The use of the healing sticks teaches the dog proper placement while heeling through use of spacial pressure from the healing sticks.

Give us a call to learn the best way to teach, your four legged friend, to walk calmly with a loose leash.

Do you have problems with a reactive dog and need guidance on how best to approach the situation?

Skooks is one of my personal dogs. He is a 3 year old male Malinois. I got Skooks at 8 weeks old and I immediately noticed serious behavior problems. I would not learn the severity of his behavior problems until I and many other trainers put hands on him. He was very reactive as a young dog, reactivity can be caused by a few factors it can be learned, built and/or genetic. The pathways will vary depending on the reasons for reactivity but the goals are the same clear communication and proper outlets to meet the individual dogs needs.

Skooks and I train for our passion in the traditional sport of French Ring a French dog sport originating over 100 years ago that combines obedience, agility and bite work routines. Currently Skooks holds his entry level certificate and is training for the next level progressing in difficulty.

Working with a dog takes more than toys, treats and timing. You need to have a solid bond first and foremost with the dog. Your bond comes from motivational rewards and simply spending time and enjoying your dog. Through our training we make sure your dog is enjoyable to be with strengthening your bond and your dogs willingness to be your faithful friend.
