an·thro·po·mor·phism
〰️
the attribution of human characteristics or behavior to a god, animal, or object.
〰️
Anthropomorphizing dogs is something we see a lot on social media. It can be funny and cute, but the fact is, it's not doing your dog any favors. The problem comes from misunderstanding how dogs biologically function differently than humans. Dogs don't speak, they don't naturally understand human etiquette, and they don't see the world the same way as people do. They have evolved from wild animals and with how domesticated they are now, it is easy to forget that.

Now, why does this matter?

Because, by anthropomorphizing your dog, you are setting them up for failure. Dogs need to be communicated with in a way THEY understand, they need to be trained in order to comply with society's rules, and they need to be given the enrichment they instinctually crave.

I'm not saying don't throw your dog a birthday party. What I am saying is to learn how your dog's brain works, understand how to clearly communicate with them, and make sure they are getting adequate exercise and enrichment.

Juniper and I have been busy getting everything ready for our move to San Diego but we are finally done and on the road. We expect to be in San Diego in January because we are going to take our time going down the coast. Juniper is the happiest I’ve ever seen on the beach. Many more adventures to come :)

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT!!

Juniper and I will be traveling to San Diego to dog sit for the winter. I will be leaving at the end of November and will be returning with the sun🌞. Not exactly sure when that will be, as spring in North Idaho is temperamental, but I'm guessing April-Mayish.

I am leaving for health reasons. I developed a medical condition called cold urticaria last year. To put it plainly, I'm allergic to the cold. When I get cold, my skin turns red, throbs in pain, swells up, and breaks out in hives. You can actually go into anaphylactic shock, but I’ve never gotten to that point. Needless to say, I can't properly run my business during the winter because it functions primarily outside⛰🥾.

I'm very excited for this new adventure and I appreciate the support I've recieved in making this decision!

Looking forward to meeting new friends in San Diego!! 🐾

June got rushed by 2 off leash dogs today…one friendly, one not, both not okay.

We were down by the river and I had Juniper on a long line because I saw an off leash dog. As soon as the off leash dog saw her, she came bolting towards us. She was a medium sized pit bull and the owner was just yelling, “she’s friendly!”. I put Juniper behind me and grabbed this dog’s leash to keep her away from June. I told him that June isn’t always friendly just so hopefully next time, he doesn’t let his dog rush a strange dog.

The second time was only 30 minutes later. This guy came and had about 4 or 5 off leash dogs 🤦🏼‍♀️. Most of them were small and then one pit bull. They seemed to be sticking with the owner pretty well until one of the little dogs started trying to attack Juniper. As soon as this dog displayed aggressive behavior, I started kicking at it. None of my kicks really landed because the dog was so fast but it kept it away. I wasn’t worried about the dog hurting Juniper but I didn’t want her to get attacked by a small dog and then become reactive towards them.

Advocate and protect your dog because if you don’t, they will feel the need to protect themselves which is one reason dogs become reactive. I will do whatever is necessary, including kicking a dog right in front of the owner, to keep June and all the dogs I take care of safe. Don’t come at us 🙅🏼‍♀️

I was warned about getting a doberman. I was told that she might turn on me, attack me in my sleep, and become a vicious monster. People on the street would be interested in her, find out she's a doberman, and then immediately be concerned. I was given unsolicited stories about dobermans that turned on their owners. My landlord told me to my face that she hates dobermans and thinks that Juniper is bound to be aggressive.

Oh how wrong these people were...

Any breed of dog can be aggressive, including golden retrievers and labs. Don't judge a dog based on its breed, judge a dog based on its temperament, obedience, and personality because all dogs are individuals. For me, the bigger and "scarier," the better.

Training never stops. What I mean by this is, I don’t train to just get a better-behaved dog. I train to provide the mental stimulation I know a working breed needs, to improve our bond, and because I know she enjoys it. Juniper's training will never be "finished." She will continue to learn things for the rest of her life just like us. Having a well-behaved dog is an outcome of consistent training but not the singular focus.

When I take care of your dog, I treat them like my own. I strive to fulfill all their needs. That includes physical, mental, and emotional.

Meeting physical needs are easy. It may mean a walk, run, hike, swim, or fetch.

Mental needs looks more like making meal time enriching, brain games, working on basic obedience, and giving them a job to do.

Emotional needs can look like giving pets and praise, a decompression walk, quiet time, or creating outlets to express natural behaviors.

I want your dog to live the best life possible while in my care. They have a staycation while you go on vacation 🏖.

When I am out of the house with a client‘s dog, I tell people the dog is not friendly 🚫.

I do this to prevent their dog from approaching because I do not know their dog’s behavior. Dogs can live a completely fulfilled and enriched life without meeting every dog they meet on the street. I keep my clients’ dogs safe by not introducing them to any dogs, even if the owners say they are friendly.

Just tonight, at the farmers market, a lady approached wanting to introduce her dog and I said “no, he’s not friendly.” She later explained that her dog is not always friendly either but was still trying to introduce him…The majority of dog owners do not know how to read dog body language and don’t know the signs of an uncomfortable, anxious, or reactive dog about to lose it.

I do this with Juniper also. Juniper absolutely loves dogs, but when we’re out, especially while training, she doesn’t meet any dogs. I had someone approach with a dog that was barking, growling, and lunging at Juniper and he asked if she wanted to meet…I promptly said no. It only takes one attack to make a reactive dog. I do everything I can to protect Juniper and my clients dogs from that.

So yes, in public, this friendly face is labeled not friendly. ✋🏼🙅🏼‍♀️

I'm going to be honest, I have been struggling lately.

Any business owner knows the stress that comes with owning and running a business. I have not been immune to this.

I've been having mental breakdowns pretty frequently recently and have needed to take time away from work to recover. I have worked extremely hard this summer, clocking 60+ hours every week, 7 days a week. There were times that I would go over a month without a single day off. Many people think that as a dog sitter, I just sit at home and hang out with dogs. This is not the case. It's a very active and mentally draining job taking care of so many dogs. Now don't get me wrong, I love what I do, but I need to establish a work life balance in order to be sustainable.

This means...

I will be scheduling time off and not booking on those days. 📆

I will have designated hours that I will respond to messages and calls. (9am-6pm, Monday-Friday)📱

I will be charging a fair price that reflects my experience, effort, and expertise. 💵

And...

I will be going on more hikes and adventuring as much as possible. 🥾⛰

I appreciate everyone's patience and support as I establish my business and figure things out along the way as a new business owner!
