Tootsie is the sweetest lab but she used to pull like a freight train. I took Tootsie for a few walks/lessons and taught her “heel” (walk next to us). Then the training got transferred to her owners, an older couple that can’t afford to be pulled down by their dog as it’s very dangerous!
It’s also important that our dogs get to sniff and explore some while they’re out with us and that they clearly understand when they’re doing work and when they’re not.
Week 5 in the books. So many cool break throughs with the dogs this week. This one was especially cool. Mocha used to be mega shy in class, now she’s wayyyy comfortable and enjoying the process. Here we are giving her the cue we want of “down,” waiting a beat, then giving just as much help as the dog needs to learn what we’re asking. Ideally no more, no less. And then fading the physical help is super super easy and then Mocha will be “downing” on just the verbal cue in no time.
Iris is officially off leash. Showing off her distance “down” and recall. She’s the last dog I’m training before I start my new job with @precisiondogtrainingacademy next week.
Have the privilege of watching Brooks&Lily for a bit. Took them out with the new trainee (Iris) to show her how we off leash heel. They still got it.
Almost every dog can “sit” but can they hold it until told to come out of the behavior. Can they hold it if you walk behind them, drop food on the ground in front of them, stay in a sit as your run away? Bomb proof your dog’s obedience so that it’s actually practical/useful and not just a “trick.”
Yes, I wear flip flops sometimes when training dogs 😂
Week 2 of group class in the books @summitpetcare
Iris (new trainee) heel practice in an interesting field with other dogs playing around her. Perfect weather too, about time!
Back at it again, been awhile. Basic obedience group class @summitpetcare
Scenting for bunnies 🐰 I think
Beautiful day today! Love taking trained dogs out and let them have their freedom. Imagine being confined to a 6ft leash your whole life! These are not all “happy go lucky” dogs either. Some had biting/aggression issues. But once you know what you’re doing and you’re clear to the dogs change happens quickly.
Remi getting some “heel” refresh. Out walking with the boys, Daxter and Hazel.
Transferring training over to owner. @namita_gogumalla doing a great job walking her boy! This dude was a super puller and now mom has control and if you look closely you can see Oden is loving it! Got to practice Lily’s off leash heel too.
Odie “Oden” practicing off leash heel. (DISCLAIMER: I don’t make this a normal habit. Leash is always on for consideration of others, video for demo purposes only)
Heeling with Oden and then Daxter joins. Some recalls with Oden, down, sit, “free” as release from obedience. See if spot all the squirrels in the trees and grass!
Zaika rock solid rocket recalls! Big credit to her owner for getting her off to a great start with recalls as this girl loves to run free!
Really enjoying these two play. Oden is here for board&train and Lily is here for daycare&train. Nice that they now can play outside the fenced area of the property.
Day 4 with Odin. One the THE hardest pullers on walks I’ve trained. Heavily dog reactive, people reactive, everything reactive 😂 But very quickly he’s becoming at peace and clear about how to be all while NOT missing out to being a dog. Gets to sniff, explore and play when not heeling.
Another group doing basic obedience class @summitpetcare This time we have daycare veterans Moose and Patches gettin their learning on!
Pit bull recalls. Must practice real world scenarios, calling a dog out of fixation/arousal.
Zonked out 💤 💤 💤 Walked, trained, played with and fed.
