One of the questions I ask is “are your dogs needs being met?”
I like this question because it helps to put things in perspective for my clients. This helps to shift the focus towards why your dog is behaving a certain way.
The why is importance
When you start ensuring their mental and physical needs are met, I’m willing to bet you’ll see an improvement in their behavior. #dogtraining #dogtrainer #portlanddogtrainer #portlanddogtraining #portlandoregon #smallbusiness #reactivedog
Murphy and River are the best of buds!
We always had a #labrador and #goldenretriever in our house when I was growing up and now I remember why!

As if I didn’t get enough steps in already, I am racking up more while Lily is practicing her down. 😂
The intention here is to get Lily comfortable with me and other people moving around her while she is in a down position.

Went out to the @tigardfarmersmarket on Sunday and Lily did amazing!! We stopped by the @2bulliesbakery booth and got some calming treats. After we got some great food at @wowcowhq we headed home to cool off! I got a picture of Lily in an unusual state, sleeping 😴. #shoplocal #smallbusiness #dogs #dogtraining #dogtrainer #reactivedog #reactivedogtraining #behavior #pnw

Having some pre trip play time will make the trip a bit easier. Once you arrive, your pups will be less rambunctious as well. Don’t forget this simple tip on your next trip!

Create time and opportunities to allow your pups to sniff the environment! Your pup learns about objects with their nose! So when appropriate, allow your pup to stop and smell the roses

Playtime is an awesome way to ensure your dog is getting enough exercise however adding in some structure/training is invaluable!!
This extra effort has a big pay off! This will help teach / condition your pup to respond to the cues and commands even if something exciting is going on.

Keep training sessions short and sweet at first. Why? Learning is tough! Progressively increase the duration of your sessions. This is to ensure you avoid “Information overload”. One way to help avoid this is to enter each session with a training goal/plan to help keep you as the “teacher” on task.

1. It starts at home - Begin training sessions in familiar spaces. This could be in the living room or the backyard. Why? So that you can control variables like unfamiliar sights and sounds that would distract your dog and hinder progress.
2. Adding in variables: Once your dog is crushing their training, gradually introduce other variables to each command. Duration is a great variable to start with. When asking for a sit, increase the time they have to sit before rewarding them.
3. Consistency is Key: by being consistent you are helping them understand what is expected of them. Remember they are learning a new language so keep the commands consistent. Recall is always “come” and sit is always “sit”. SAY LESS😎 #dogtrainingtips #portlanddogtrainers #portlanddogtraining #reactivedog #reactivedogtraining
How does bringing your dog new places help with training?
You are helping them to GENERALIZE their training. This means they are able to apply their knowledge to other situations.

Do you feel like your dog is great in some situations and not others? This could be part of the reason why.
Another reason is probably because you haven’t reached out to train with me yet 😉

Dog parks still ain’t it… don’t let the warm weather make you forgot about the people who bring in untrained dogs or worse yet, the owner who doesn’t even pay attention to their dog the entire time they are there.

One of the worst things I saw was someone brought in a pregnant dog who was a few weeks away from delivering 🫢🤯🤬 I was blown away that the owner of said pregnant dog didn’t realize this was an issue even though the signs were there. Such as every dog at the park charging the fence and following them all the way around to the entrance going absolutely bonkers.
The dogs freaking out, barking like mad lads and jumping over each other at the gate didn’t clue this person in that maybe they were about to walk into a bad situation. Once the gate opened….well……chaos

We are at @cycledog in #portland checking out some of their cool gear when I saw Bnt Sunny staring at something. Turns out they have an indoor dog park/play area and he saw a dog running around. What am I rewarding for?
