I’ve been seeing some things lately about dog training in the area that has been putting a major damper on my mood so I felt the need to have a bit of a rant.

I saw this video clip at a conference years ago. Although I had been interested in behavior and helping my patients and clients using positive reinforcement methods, this was the video that really sealed the deal and began my training journey.

If a hyena (or other zoo animals) can have an exam, blood draw, etc. done without the use of force, aversives, or anesthesia, why couldn’t the same be done for my veterinary patients? How could I begin training and bringing it into the clinic to help my patients and clients? How could I begin to reduce fear, anxiety, and stress through positive reinforcement training? If it can be done for zoo animals that are definitely not pets, why not also pets? This video was posted 12 years ago. We’ve gained even more knowledge about how we can better help and train animals in those 12 years, still without force or the use of aversive techniques. Yes, there are times where medication is the best tool for reducing fear, anxiety, and stress, but that is more in depth than this basic thought of how can we do better. If we know better, generally, we do better.

If you and your pet have training struggles, veterinary visit struggles, or fear, stress, and anxiety struggles, please reach out. If you think you have to use force or shock collars for training, I want you to know that you don’t. I want you to know that you have options, ones that will help strengthen the bond between you and your pet rather than hurting that bond or one of you.

While in Orlando I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to geek out with the dolphins and trainers at SeaWorld and Discovery Cove. They use positive reinforcement based training as well! You can see me doing a “touch” and then rewarding with a herring. If it can be done with a dolphin, why not your dog?! 🐬🐶

I had such an excellent time at the NAVC VMX 2023 conference! I feel like I learned so much!! I was also able to see some awesome speakers like Temple Grandin and Dr. Marty Becker. The legendary Kevin Bacon made an appearance as a lunchtime entertainment the first day!
Keeping up to date on continuing education is just one way we can help provide the best for our clients by providing some of the most up to date training science.
