TOTAL ECLIPSE TODAY!!
Most animals know not to look directly into the sun 😉, but as a precaution, please keep your pet indoors during the eclipse and close blinds to sun facing windows. Also, please keep in mind that some animals may get anxious if it becomes dark unexpectedly during the day.

14/02/2024

🐾💌Happy Valentine's Day to all the pet parents and your furry valentines! While you are celebrating, here are hazards to avoid to keep everyone safe:
🔴Chocolate, xylitol and candy - While sweets are a favorite for humans, chocolate, candies and gums that are sweetened with xylitol are unsafe for pets to consume. It’s important to keep all sweet treats away from your pets. Give pet-approved treats instead!
🔴Flowers - While bouquets are a Valentine’s Day staple, some flowers can be perilous to pets. Lilies can be potentially fatal to cats. Also be mindful of roses. While most florists are very careful to remove thorns from stems, if your pet bites, steps on, or swallows a thorn, it can cause pain or lead to infection. Make sure flowers are well out of reach of your pets.
🔴Candles - It’s nice to set your evening a-glow with candlelight but put out the flame when you leave the room. Pawing kittens and nosy pooches can burn themselves or cause a fire by knocking over unattended candles.
🔴Alcohol - Because animals are smaller than humans, a little bit of alcohol can do a lot of harm.

If you suspect your pet has ingested something toxic, call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435. Here's to a safe, happy Valentine's Day filled with lots of love, licks, purrs and tail wags! 🐾🐈‍⬛🐶💘💌

"🌧️ November Showers? No Problem for Paws! 🐕"
- Waterproof gear can keep your pets dry during walks.
- Watch for slippery areas during rain; pets can slip too. Consider getting your pet booties for them to wear in bad weather. You can find weather-wear items for your pets at companies like Ruffwear, LL Bean, Orvis, etc.

- Avoid walking through puddles! You never know how deep they are, or if there is anything hazardous in them that you can't see!

Did you know that SEPTEMBER 16TH is NATIONAL PUPPY MILL AWARENESS DAY? While reputable dog breeders care for the animals they raise, a puppy mill doesn't put the animal's needs first. Not only do the dogs often live in poor conditions, but they're bred more often than is healthy. If you are considering adding a new pet to your family, consider adopting from a shelter. Even pure-bred animals find their way to the shelter. Remember - ADOPT DON'T SHOP!

Did you know statistics show that 1 in 3 pets will become lost at some point during their lives? One way to help a lost pet be reunited with their family is to make sure they have a registered microchip.

Today is National Check the Chip Day! A day to remind owners about the importance of microchipping their dogs and cats and to confirm their registration information is up to date. If your pet has a microchip, have your veterinarian scan the chip at your next visit to ensure it is still working properly!

Want more information on microchips? Visit HomeAgain.com or speak with your veterinarian.

LEAVING PETS IN HOT CARS? NOT COOL! Leaving your pet inside your parked car unattended in the summer is NEVER a safe thing to do. On a warm day the temperature inside a car can exceed 120° in a matter of minutes, even if you have the windows partially opened or parked in the shade. Best friends deserve the best care. If you love them, don’t leave them.

CAUTION! Did you know that the temperature of sidewalks and asphalt can be up to 50° HOTTER than the air temperature in these summer months? With these sweltering days of summer, please use caution when taking your dog out on a walk. Your pet’s paws can get burned. TIP - if you can’t hold your hand to the sidewalk or asphalt for seven seconds, it’s too hot for your pet’s paws! It’s always preferable to walk your dog on the grass whenever possible, and consider getting booties for their paws. Protect your pets!

Your dog’s skin is an indication of her overall health, so it’s important to keep it in prime shape. When a skin problem occurs, your dog may respond with excessive scratching, chewing and/or licking. A wide range of causes—including external parasites, infections, allergies, metabolic problems and stress, or a combination of these—may be to blame.

Dogs begin to show visible age-related changes at about seven to 12 years of age. There are metabolic, immunologic and body composition changes, too. Some of these may be unavoidable while others can be managed with diet. When feeding your older dog, the main objective should be to maintain health and optimum body weight, slow development of chronic disease and minimize diseases that may already be present.
