My faith in equine eventing is restored. Ros Canter on Lordship's Graffalo in first and Tim Price on Vitali second. Harry Meade rode three horses, and did it well, and two of them are in 3rd and 4th position.

Great production, Defender Burghley Horse Trials.

Last year's Burleigh was enough to make me wonder why I watch equine eventing. Oliver Townend won with a horse who looked like he was numb with terror, more afraid of his rider than of taking care of himself. He seemed to wish he was anywhere else. He looked like a horse who had been beaten so much he had lost any meaningful connection with his own wellbeing. Add to that, the scoring was uneven--the jumping could obliterate a phenomenal dressage and cross country score. And it did. Tim Price fell off the podium (not literally) and was left with NO CREDIT for his record-breaking dressage and unmatchable cross country rounds. Yes, some of that was the horse not jumping well. But really?

Instead, the sport awarded the horse be**er. Here is Townend's record from A SINGLE YEAR. What this means is that he is whipping his horses when the camera is paying less attention. Whipping them so much that the ground jury keeps trying to stop him.

So that is why the horse who won Burleigh last year would have been ever so much happier to have been saved from his rider, the man who terrorized him into winning.

This year, Townend's horse did his very best to follow his rider's instructions over a tricky set of fences. Townend tried to use his weight, heels, and yes, whip, to get the horse to do as he asked. But there was an error in the line to the fence and the horse simply could not correct it. The horse went one way, Townend went the other, dumped to the turf as he should be. I've seen his horses do this to him on numerous occasions. An abused horse will find a way to unseat their rider. It's only a matter of time.

The FEI ought to be stopping these riders before the horses have to.

Obviously, verbal warnings are simply not enough.

Dominick started every day by calling out "All is well!" And throughout the day, when he had a moment of happiness, he would cry out again, loud enough for anybody to hear, "All is well!" At night he kept his family warm in the unheated house. Dominick was the biggest of them and put his arms around them all to keep them warm when darkness fell. They knew he would protect them from intruders. He always found the best treats and instead of eating them himself, called to his family to come and eat their fill before having any for himself. He found his family places in the sun to warm up. He kept them all together for safety and companionship. He prevented them from quarreling with each other by making them all feel secure all the time. He would without any doubt sacrifice himself to save any one of his family.

Which he did. Yesterday. And now he is gone, and there is nobody to cry, "All is well!" A predatory big cat has a full stomach, and we have nobody to tell us that all is well. Dominick's family have to huddle together for warmth, but there is nobody to spread arms around them.

Does anybody have a rooster they don't want? We need another.
