I've been holding off making this post but it needs to be said.
It blows my mind that people just ask perfect strangers to take care of their pets. So many pets go missing while in the care of someone you barely know.
If you have a pet, recently acquired one, just moved to the area, etc. don't wait for the last minute to find a petsitter. Even if you have no immediate plans, be proactive and start looking.
You can get references from neighbors, check with vet offices or boarding facilities if they have vet techs or experienced caregivers that will look after your pet. You can find licensed and bonded petsitters on organizations like Rover or Pet Sitters International. Take time to interview and do meet and greets to ensure you are leaving your pet in the hands of someone reliable.
It doesn't matter if your teenage neighbor needs the money for a new iPhone, or a relative owes you a favor, your pet deserves to be cared for by a responsible, experienced person.
