At first glance a dog’s neck may seem muscular and strong; easily capable of having a leash and collar attached for walking. After all, it’s what we’ve used for the past umpteen years and it’s able…

You've probably heard we're in for a 🔥major heat wave🔥 this week in Marin (and all around California) so make sure you're prepared to beat the heat, pets included! Dogs and cats can't sweat like humans, so they can be very susceptible to heat stroke when the temperature soars.

Walk your dog during the cooler morning and evening hours to avoid overheating or burns to their paws. Asphalt, concrete, sand, and even packed dirt can get hot enough to burn paw pads. If it's too hot for you to hold your hand against a surface, it's too hot for your dog!

Make sure your pets have access to water all day long.💧 If you take your dog with you when you leave the house, bring along a bowl and water for them to drink - don't make them wait until you return home!

And speaking of taking your pup along with you: 🚫NEVER leave a dog in a hot car🚫 - not even in the shade, not even with the windows down, and not even for a very quick errand. A car's internal temperature can become deadly in a matter of minutes in this weather.

If you notice your pets showing signs of heat stroke such as excessive panting, heavy salivating, and extreme lethargy, get them to a cool spot in your home and offer plenty of water. You can also immerse them slowly in a bath of cool water (NOT ice cold water, which can cause shock) to lower their body temperature, and contact your veterinarian.

Last but not least: We're also in a Red Flag Warning, meaning fire conditions are critical, so make sure your go bag - for both people AND pets - is at the ready! Subscribe to local emergency alerts like Nixle and use apps like PulsePoint or WatchDuty to keep tabs on local fires and other emergencies.

Whew! We know that's a lot, but we want everyone to stay safe in this weather, people and pets alike. ❤

Despite living successfully alongside humans cats are still genetically similar to their wild ancestors 🐈‍⬛🐆

Their feeding habits and metabolism are still the same as a cat that would hunt to obtain food, eating several small prey over a 24-hour period 🐾

Nowadays, most pet cats obtain their nutritional needs from cat food; however, cats are not designed to eat a small number of large meals in one day, in fact, quite the opposite. Feeding one or two large meals can make cats:

🔸Eat too quickly, making them more likely to regurgitate food

🔸Overeat, leading to obesity

🔸Hungry, making them compete with other cats for food

🔸Uncomfortable, as their stomachs are not designed to eat large meals

Here are some tips on how to achieve a feeding regime that is more in line with how your cat would naturally eat. You could try:

😺Feeding the same amount of food, but splitting this into 5 meals fed throughout the day and night

😺Obtaining a timed feeder for overnight meals or for feeding whilst you are away from home e.g. at work

😺Feeding your cat from a puzzle feeder. Not only does this provide physical and mental stimulation for your cat, but it can also slow down how quickly they eat. Puzzle feeders are good to use before you leave the house or go to bed. Some cats will leave some of the food and come back to it later too.

😺Feed in various locations around the home so your cat has to search for their food

😺Feeding ad- lib - this can work well for some households, but not for others are some cats will overeat if food is freely available. Cats may also compete for access to food stations, so care should be taken to monitor cats being fed this way.

👨‍👩‍👧How you feed your cat may differ according to your lifestyle and how many cats are living in your household but feeding several small meals over a 24-hour period can help prevent begging behaviours and competition over food in multicat households 🐈‍⬛🐈‍⬛

Just remember that cats are solitary hunters and feeders, so it’s best to feed them out of sight of other cats where possible 😺

Our Story

I’ve been providing Cat sitting visits and Dog walking since 2016. This is my passion and career.

Like most Marin residents, I’ve had to shelter in place due to wildfires and now COVID-19. As our county and state allow, I’m resuming business and have a COVID-19 safety plan.

I use positive reinforcement best practices to work with my clients. These are recommended by ASPCA, Humane Society, and Fear Free.

I’m a proponent of observing canine and feline body language and communication and following AVMA health standards.
