Lure Coursing and FastCAT 🐕 💨
This summer, some of the BAD DOGS from our personal pack hit the track and got to try out a very popular coursing sport called FastCAT!
Coursing is a sport that tests your dog’s genetic instincts with a simple game of ‘chase and catch.’ The dog runs after a lure (in this case, a plastic bag on a pulley system) and their job is to stay on that lure wherever it goes and, eventually, catch it.
Lure Coursing SPECIFICALLY throws in randomly timed, exaggerated turns to WEAR the dog out. They use this technique to elicit the same properties of an actual chase scenario. Lure coursing is ALL about technique.
This sport challenges your dog’s mind AND body and it’s truly an honor to be able to experience a dogs natural instincts kick in. Even dogs with no formal training for the sport can be very successful if they have the drive!
On average, dogs can run anywhere from 15-20mph. Their speed depends on breed, structure, health, age, and size.
Lure coursing has been a dog sport since the early 70’s. The AKC currently ONLY allows sight hound breeds to compete in LC. These dogs are what this sport was made for. A Greyhound can max out at a speed of 45mph.
If you ARE interested in doing something like this with your dog who has the drive for it but you don’t own a sight hound (like us), you can try out FASTCAT!
Fastcat is another coursing sport that’s open to all breeds. In FC, the lure is on a 100m straight way!

We always like to say- “It’s better to be over prepared than under prepared” - especially when it comes to what we gear up with on Adventure Days.
DOG HORN 📢
Safety is our NUMBER ONE TOP priority. We are hiking with anywhere from 6-10 dogs at a time. While we opt for trails/destinations that require dogs to be ON-LEASH, off-leash dogs are always a possibility. This horn produces a loud sound intended to scare off an approaching dog BEFORE it gets close to our pack. We have other protocols we follow as well for these situations but the horn is top on the list!

TICK TWISTER 🕷️
Even though it’s been a little cold, the ticks are still out folks! To ensure we are removing the ENTIRE tick (if we find one embedded) we use this handy little tool and it makes things super easy!
HIGH VALUE TREATS & KIBBLE 😋
Reinforcement! Along with a high quality kibble we also make sure to have something of higher value (Our go to’s are @stellaandchewys and @honestkitchen ). But, sometimes kibble just doesn’t cut it when you’re exploring new places with a pack of BADDIES! High value treat of choice this week is some good ole bison liver from @greenjujukitchen
REWARD TOY 🤩
Last but not least, a reward toy! You guys know how much we LOVE to incorporate play into our training. @genuine_dog_gear has TONS of great little tugs that fit in your treat pouch or pocket perfectly. This makes it super convenient to break it out whenever and wherever so we can utilize it more often!
