⛈ Hurricane season is upon us! Are you prepared if you have to evacuate? It's important to have your pets prepared in case you have to travel at last minute or even if you stay in town. Some things to be ready with are:
1) Ensure your pet's microchip is up-to-date and if your pet isn't microchip, consider getting it done. If you don't know your pet's microchip info, you can have them scanned at any veterinary clinic or shelter.
2) Get vaccines updated and/or get their most recent records. If you have to travel, most hotels will want proof of at least a Rabies and boarding facilities will want proof of all vaccines as well.
3) Take a current picture of your pet. This is important in case your pet gets lost.
4) Stay on top of refilling essential medications.
5) In addition to a microchip, it's a good idea to have a current Rabies tag and ID tag on your pet's collar.

Remember - if there is an evacuation order that means boarding facilities in the area will have to close and evacuate also so it's important to be prepared to take your pet with you. For more tips and a checklist, here's some information from the CDC:https://www.cdc.gov/healthypets/resources/disaster-prep-pet-emergency-checklist.pdf

We often get calls regarding dental cleaning quotes. Like with humans, no dental is copy and paste. Here is a before and after of a dental from yesterday. Dr. Forster just planned to scale and polish the teeth but after chipping away at the tartar she noticed gum recession that was caused by bacteria which ultimately resulting in the patient needing 2 extractions. Upon physical exam we try to give you a rough estimate of cost but we don’t know for sure until the pet is under anesthesia if things will need to be pulled or not. Lincoln’s stinky breath is much better after getting rid of those nasty teeth and he feels like a brand new dog! (The after picture is while he’s sunbathing in the grass ☀️)

Just wanted to share a heartwarming story on this beautiful day 💛

We don’t always get a happy ending in animal welfare, but this is one for the books.

Our friends at Chatham County Animal Services reached out to us about an extremely scared dog who was surrendered to the shelter. Peppa was shut down and her emotional health was declining. Her tailed stayed tucked tightly and she was suffering. CCAS said she was surrendered by an owner and we were able to get in contact with the family.

It turns out, Peppa’s family loved her deeply. Peppa’s mother suddenly lost her housing and was unable to seek emergency shelter with Peppa.

Her mother never wanted to surrender Peppa, but was unable to immediately find safe, dog-friendly housing for her (human) children.

Renegade was able to work with Peppa’s mother and care for her while the family moved from a shelter to a home where Peppa would be welcome.

Renegade helped get Peppa spayed, up to date on vaccines and on regular preventatives.

Pets are family and we know that sometimes it takes a community to ensure family sticks together. When families experience crisis, there are few safety nets to ensure pets stay with their humans. Our resources are limited, but we desperately want to fill that gap.

The second Peppa saw her mom and her human siblings, her entire demeanor changed. She became a different dog, overjoyed and bouncing with happiness.

We couldn’t be more honored or happy to play a role in reuniting this beautiful family.

Happy tails, Peppa!

Calling all hound lovers! This sweet girl needs a home to call her own! Maggie is a 37 pound, intact hound mix. Since she's intact, her new owners would need to have her spayed. She unfortunately is also heartworm positive but we can discuss this diagnosis with anyone interested in Maggie. She has been in a home with other dogs since she was found. If you would like more information on Maggie or are interested in adopting her, please message us so we can put you in contact with her foster family. She's currently being fostered with her finder (a FAV client).

🔔 ADOPTION ALERT!!🔔
These 3 adorable kitties are in need of a home! The momma cat was found by a client of ours and is *so* sweet- I estimate her to be about a year old. Good with kids, other cats, and dogs!
The baby kitties (both male) are about 8 weeks old now and are also *so* sweet.
Please let us know if you would be interested in giving one of these cuties a fantastic home and we will get you in contact with our client currently fostering them!

April is Heartworm 🫀🪱 Awareness Month. Heartworm prevention is recommended year round, especially in the south since it usually doesn't get cold enough to kill off the mosquitoes🦟. While heartworms in dogs can be treated and cured, there is no cure yet for heartworm disease in cats which is why we recommend keeping your feline 🐈 friend on Revolution or Bravecto Plus. From oral preventions to a yearly shot, there are multiple options for our canine 🐕 friends. Heartworm tests for dogs are recommended yearly to ensure that the prevention your pet is on is doing its job. Pet not currently on prevention? Contact us to see how to get them started.

Dr. Forster and Lauren got to participate in another career day this past week! They were lucky to talk to the children at Joseph S. Shanklin Elementary School in Beaufort about how awesome a career in veterinary medicine is! The kids all loved meeting Lauren’s amazing circus dog, Emma, and watching her do some tricks. Thanks so much for having us! We always have a blast at these events!

🦷Happy Dental Awareness Month!🦷

"Dental health is a very important part of your pet’s overall health, and dental problems can cause, or be caused by, other health problems.
Your pet’s teeth and gums should be checked at least once a year by your veterinarian for early signs of problems and to keep your pet’s mouth healthy.
Some pets become irritable when they have dental problems, and any changes in your pet’s behavior should prompt a visit to your veterinarian. Always be careful when evaluating your pet’s mouth, because a painful animal may bite.

🌟What can I do at home for my pet’s oral health?🌟
Prevention of the most common oral disease in pets consists of frequent removal of the dental plaque and tartar that forms on teeth that are not kept clean. Regularly brushing your pet’s teeth is the single most effective thing you can do to keep their teeth healthy between dental cleanings, and may reduce the frequency or even eliminate the need for periodic dental cleaning by your veterinarian. Daily brushing is best, but it’s not always possible and brushing several times a week can be effective. Most dogs accept brushing, but cats can be a bit more resistant patience and training are important.

There are many pet products marketed with claims that they improve dental health, but not all of them are effective. Talk with your veterinarian about any dental products, treats, or dental-specific diets you’re considering for your pet, or ask your veterinarian for their recommendation.

🌟What about “anesthesia-free” dental cleanings?🌟
The American Veterinary Dental College does not recommend dental cleanings without anesthesia because they do not allow cleaning or inspection below the gumline, where most dental disease occurs, and can result in injury to the pet or the person performing the procedure.”
