Welcome to Coaching Canine Companions’ Resource Guarding program.
This instinctive behavior cannot be ignored and must be addressed. Ignoring it will not make it disappear on its own.
Possession or resource guarding is a common issue, particularly in puppies aged between 5 and 8 months, when they may go through fear periods. While most dogs can be easily trained to overcome this behavior, some may require more focused attention to improve their behavior.

Prologue: The Universal Instinct

Every creature guards something.

A towering tree anchors its roots deep into the soil, defending its claim against the creeping tendrils of neighboring plants. A river carves an unyielding path through the earth, holding its course tightly even as rain and stone attempt to reshape it. A hawk circles the open sky, its sharp gaze vigilant over a fragile nest. At its core, life is a quiet battle to protect what matters most.

And so it is with humans. And so it is with dogs.

In the beginning, there was a flicker of understanding. Thousands of years ago, a wolf lay crouched in the shadow of a campfire, jaws tight around the brittle remains of a bone. Across the flames, a hunter watched, his hands cradling a meager meal. Neither moved, their eyes locked in a fragile stalemate. The bone was survival for the wolf—a last defense against hunger. For the hunter, it was more: recognizing a kindred struggle. He placed his food on the ground and stepped back—a peace offering. The wolf hesitated, then crept forward, its amber eyes never leaving the man’s hands. Trust, once born, rarely comes easily.

That primal exchange would echo through millennia, from the wild edges of forests to suburban backyards, and humans and their four-legged companions began a dance of loyalty and protection, love and fear, giving and guarding.

For Evelyn, it began with a growl.

She had wanted to heal. After years of protecting herself—her heart hopes and most vulnerable truths—she thought adopting Max might help her open up. A rescue dog, battered by life, seemed a fitting match for her fractured spirit. But Max was no gentle salve. His growls, low and guttural, emerged every time Evelyn reached for his toy or his food. His body tensed, his teeth bared. It was as though the weight of his survival clung to every object he possessed.

Evelyn knew that sound too well. It was the sound of fear wrapped in defiance—the sound of everything held close, everything untouchable.

But this is a story about more than Evelyn and Max. It is a story about the things we guard—our treasures and our wounds—and the slow, delicate process of learning to let go. It is about the intricate web of life, where the actions of one ripple through the lives of others. It is about trust, not as a given but as a fragile, hard-won gift.

What if the instinct to protect is about survival and connection? What if the courage to release what we guard—to open the doors we keep locked—could change everything?

Every creature guards something. The question is: What are we willing to share?

The Holiday Cling:

Helping Your Dog Transition Smoothly After the Holidays

The holidays are a special time for bonding with family—and that includes your dog. But have you noticed how some dogs, especially those prone to separation anxiety, seem to struggle when the festivities wind down? This is what I call the "Holiday Cling."

Imagine this: your dog has just spent weeks basking in the joy of having everyone around all the time. Now, suddenly, the house goes quiet as you head back to work. For dogs predisposed to separation anxiety, this abrupt shift can be overwhelming.

How to Help:
Instead of going from "all" to "nothing," create a gentle transition. Even during the holidays, start practicing brief "alone time" sessions. Here’s how:

1. Practice Separation: Step into another room or leave the house for a few minutes while your dog stays behind. Gradually increase the duration.

2. Create a Comforting Routine: Stick to consistent mealtimes, walks, and play sessions so your dog feels secure, even when the holiday schedule changes.

3. Provide Enrichment: Offer engaging toys or puzzles during alone time to keep your dog mentally stimulated and positively occupied.

By helping your dog adjust before the holiday season ends, you'll set them up for a smoother transition when work resumes—and avoid the heartbreak of seeing them struggle. Small steps can make a big difference!

Anchor Games: Brain Games for K9 Mind Mastery

Learn How Anchor Games Can Transform K~9 Behavior

Does your dog have too much energy or need help with focus in new situations? Many pup parents face these challenges, but the solution might be simpler—and more fun—than you think.

Enter: Anchor Games.

These engaging activities aren’t just about physical activity; they’re designed to address common behavior problems by giving your dog something meaningful to focus on during hyperactivity or reactivity.

Let’s explore how you can turn these games into a tool that not only distracts your dog but also builds their confidence and calms their mind.

Why Anchor Games?

Before we dive into how to play, let’s consider why you’d want to introduce Anchor Games into your dog’s routine. Imagine this: your dog is full of energy, bouncing off the walls, unable to settle down. Or maybe they’re the opposite—nervous and hesitant in new environments, struggling with anxiety when faced with the unknown. These behaviors can be frustrating for you and your dog, but they’re often rooted in a lack of focus and confidence.

Anchor Games are specifically designed to address these issues. They channel your dog’s energy into structured tasks requiring concentration, helping her burn off excess energy while learning to focus. For anxious dogs, these games provide a safe way to explore new situations, building their confidence with each success.

Navigating Sibling Rivalry:

Counterconditioning Techniques for Fearful & Reactive Dogs

Pawsitive Paws: Sibling rivalry—it’s not just a human thing! If you’ve got more than one dog at home, especially if they’re siblings, you may have noticed some tension brewing between them. It’s a natural part of life for many dogs, but when you have a pup who’s fearful or reactive, this rivalry can become more intense and problematic. Don’t worry, though; you’re not alone in this, and with the right approach, you can help your dogs find harmony.

Understanding Sibling Rivalry in Dogs

So, what exactly is sibling rivalry in dogs? It’s not just about who gets the best spot on the couch or the last bite of a treat. Rivalry often stems from their instinctive need to establish a hierarchy. But did you know that the rivalry can be more pronounced in naturally anxious or reactive dogs? It might surprise you, but this heightened tension is often their way of coping with their insecurities.

Imagine two siblings, Callie and Ruby. Calli is a bit more confident, while Ruby tends to be cautious. When they’re close together, especially in a confined space, Ruby’s fear can translate into reactivity, where she might growl or snap at Callie. But here’s the interesting part—this isn’t about being mean; it’s about feeling safe. Curious about how to help Ruby and Callie find peace? Let’s dive into that.

What is Counterconditioning, and How Can It Help?

Counterconditioning is a powerful technique to help your dogs change their emotional responses to each other. It’s not just about stopping a behavior; it’s about shifting how your dog feels about their sibling. If Ruby associates Callie’s presence with good things rather than stress or fear, her defensive behavior will naturally diminish.

Think of it this way...

Remember, the goal isn’t perfection; it’s progress. And sometimes, progress is as simple as your dogs lying peacefully in the same room without any tension. Imagine how much less stressful that would be for everyone!

Wrapping Up

Sibling rivalry can be challenging, but with the right strategies, you can help your dogs find their peace. Whether you’re using counterconditioning, bioenergy balancing, or a combination of both, the key is to stay patient, stay consistent, and celebrate every little victory.

Curious about the next steps or wondering how to apply these techniques in your own home? Don’t hesitate to reach out—we’re here to help you and your furry family find harmony.

Embracing Healthy Eustress in Dog Training

Hello, everyone! I’m Lorrie, founder of Coaching Canine Companions of Rhode Island. Today, we’re diving into an intriguing and transformative aspect of dog training: healthy eustress. You might be wondering, "What on earth is eustress?" Well, it’s the positive kind of stress that can actually enhance your dog's training experience and overall well-being. Intrigued? Let’s explore how this works and how you can harness it to bring out the best in your furry friend.

1. Utilizing Hermetic Stress: Balanced Challenge to Skills Ratio
Have you ever noticed that your dog seems to thrive when they’re just slightly challenged? This is hermetic stress in action – a balanced challenge-to-skills ratio that pushes them just enough to grow but not enough to overwhelm them. Think of it as the sweet spot in training where your dog is engaged and excited.

a) How can you find this perfect balance for your dog?

Together, we will uncover specific techniques to identify and maintain this balance. Imagine training sessions where your dog is eager, motivated, and progressing steadily. It’s all about adjusting the difficulty of tasks in line with your dog’s current abilities.
2. Monitoring Allostatic Load: Understanding Stress Load
Our dogs, like us, have a stress threshold. This cumulative stress is known as allostatic load. Recognizing and managing this load is crucial in maintaining your dog’s health and happiness. Too much stress can lead to burnout and behavioral issues, while too little might result in boredom and stagnation.

a) How can you effectively measure and manage your dog's stress load?

Together, we will delve into practical methods for monitoring allostatic load, ensuring your dog stays in that optimal zone where eustress thrives. Picture yourself equipped with the knowledge to gauge your dog's stress levels accurately and adjust their training accordingly.

3. The Final Push: Achieving Breakthroughs
Sometimes, reaching a new milestone requires a final push – a bit more effort to break through barriers. This stage can be exhilarating and rewarding, but it needs to be handled with care to avoid tipping into distress.

a) What are the signs that your dog is ready for this final push, and how can you support them through it?

We’ll discuss the indicators that your dog is primed for a breakthrough and how to guide them through this critical phase, turning challenges into triumphs. Imagine celebrating new achievements together, knowing you’ve handled the push with finesse.

4. Focus and Flow: The Zen of Dog Training

When your dog is fully engaged and focused, they enter a state of flow – a harmonious blend of concentration and enjoyment. Achieving this state can make training sessions incredibly productive and fulfilling for both you and your dog.

a) How can you create an environment that fosters this state of flow?
Together, we will explore techniques to enhance your dog’s focus, creating a seamless and enjoyable training experience. Envision training sessions where your dog is not just learning but thriving, deeply immersed in the process.

5. Recovery: The Essential Aftercare

Just as important as the training itself is the recovery period. Dogs need time to process and recuperate, ensuring they remain healthy and eager for future sessions. Recovery can be both active and passive, each serving a unique purpose.

a) What are the best practices for active and passive recovery?

Together, we will break down effective recovery strategies, from gentle exercise to quiet relaxation. Picture a balanced routine that keeps your dog energized and ready for the next adventure.

- A. Active Recovery: Engaging in light activities that promote circulation and relaxation.
- B. Passive Recovery: Providing quiet, restful environments for your dog to unwind completely.

Conclusion and Q&A
Understanding and implementing healthy eustress in dog training can transform your approach and deepen your bond with your canine companion. Remember, it’s about finding that delicate balance that keeps your dog challenged yet comfortable, engaged, but not overwhelmed.

I’m excited to answer your questions and discuss how you can start incorporating these principles into your daily training routines. Together, we can unlock the full potential of your beloved pup.

Coaching Canine Companions

Coaching Canine Companions is a one-of-a-kind comprehensive dog training program designed to meet the needs of each unique guardian/dog team.

As a former health coach and educator, I often yearned to live a life of serving people AND dogs at the same time. I had always held special and unique relationships with my canine friends. In fact, I thought everyone did – until several people asked, "How did you train your dog to be so connected with you?" The answer wasn't something that I could just give in a few sentences, or even a few hours. However, I deeply wanted them to be as blessed as I was with these special canine friends. Hence, my idea to develop a company with various types of dog training for those who would like to build special bonds with their dogs – even if they first need to address behavioral challenges.
