🐾 Atlas' Journey to Comfortable Nail Trims 🐾
Continuing from our last post about the importance of nail trims, we want to share how we've been working with Atlas to make him comfortable with the process. It's a slow journey, but ensuring your dog understands that using their teeth won't get them out of a nail trim is crucial.
Here's the process we used with Atlas:
Step-by-Step Process:
1. Classical Conditioning: We started by picking up the clippers (or grinder) and giving Atlas a high-value treat. We repeated this until he associated the clippers with good things.
2. Gradual Desensitization: We slowly moved the clippers closer, eventually touching him with them while maintaining a positive association.
3. Paw Handling: Separately, we conditioned Atlas to love having his paw touched and held.
4. Combining Steps: Finally, we combined the two – the clippers touched the comfortably held paw, and eventually, we clipped a nail.
It's been a journey, but with patience and consistency, Atlas is making great progress. Check out this video of Atlas' progress!

Our puppy classes do more than just teach you how to crate train and stop puppy biting.
At this age your dogs are learning constantly, learning what works and what doesn't, how to get the things they want and what is scary and what isn't.
Taking time at this age to help your puppy work through and overcome potentially scary or difficult challenges in a positive and controlled environment makes it more likely for your pup to turn into a well adjusted adult that isn't overwhelmed as easily by big changes or challenges because they already have the skills to cope with these difficulties from practicing as puppies!
