The majority of pet food today is mass-produced in large batches using less-than-optimal protein sources and cooking temperatures. These highly processed products end up waiting in warehouses up to a year and a half before reaching your pet's bowl! But we know your pets deserve better - and that's why we founded Pet Wants. Our food is handcrafted with the best ingredients possible in small batches, and goes from our our kitchen to your pet's bowl in as early as 30 days! The best way to prevent your cat from getting a hairball is to brush them regularly to cut down on the amount of potential fur they ingest. There are several reasons hairballs can become more common. Your cat may simply be shedding his winter coat, or he could have skin allergies or sensitivities which cause excessive self-grooming. We have some more tips that can help!

• Adding digestive enzymes to your cat’s Pet Wants Food can help dramatically reduce hairballs. They help break down the consumed hair and allow for easier passage.
• Add some extra fiber to your cat’s diet to help move things through their digestive system better.
• Exclusively feeding dry food may not be enough to meet your cat's hydrations needs. You might consider getting your cat a water fountain to encourage them to drink more, or add canned food to your cat's diet.
• Try supplements to make the skin & coat healthier. When your cat is self-grooming there will be less shedding, and so less of a chance for hairballs.

One of our missions this month is to spread all the information we can about preventing Lyme disease in dogs! Make sure to inspect your dogs and yourself for ticks after being outside, especially after walks through the grass or woods. Look especially on your dog's feet and between toes, on lips, around eyes, ears and inside ears, and under the tail. Keep your grass mowed as short as possible and use a 100% natural flea and tick spray on your dog - some of our locations carry or can recommend one. Making sure your dog is up to date on their vaccinations is another key way to keep them safe. Remember, when it comes to Lyme disease, prevention is better - and cheaper - than the cure!

In March we talked about the difference between food allergies & sensitivities, and then last week how to spot a food allergy in your pet (read those two posts if you missed them!) This last post in the series, we're going to talk about how to support and manage a pet with a food allergy. The obvious is to avoid foods that trigger flare-ups, rashes, and stomach upset. Your vet may also recommend an elimination diet, which involves only feeding them certain foods with limited ingredients and slowly reintroducing other foods over time. Find out if your pet’s breed is more susceptible to certain food sensitivities.

Additional tips include:
• Support the immune system - Fish or increased Omega 3s can help your pet's immune system be more anti-inflammatory (krill oil, fish oil, DHA). Antioxidant-rich foods also help with this.
• Probiotics help ease uncomfortable symptoms, while supporting healthy bowel function and digestion at the same time.
• Always introduce new foods slowly with a transition period. If possible, introduce each new ingredient one at a time. This will make it much easier to identify ingredients that don’t agree with your pet in the event that they have an adverse reaction.

Don't forget, you can always ask our nutrition experts if you have any questions about feeding your pet!

08/04/2022

Remember - the best and easiest way to prevent Lyme disease is to inspect your dog for ticks after they've been outside! Lyme disease is, unfortunately, a fairly common canine disease. Typical symptoms in dogs include:
• Fever
• Loss of appetite
• Reduced energy
• Lameness (can be shifting, intermittent, and recurring)
• Generalized stiffness, discomfort, or pain
• Swelling of joints
Serious cardiac and neurological effects can also occur, as well as kidney failure. See your vet immediately if your dog shows these symptoms. Treatment for Lyme disease in dogs usually involves a course of antibiotics which will last for 4 weeks or longer. Your vet may also prescribe anti-inflammatory medication to help alleviate joint pain.

06/04/2022

Last month we talked about symptoms of causes of spring season intolerances, sensitivities, or allergies in dogs, and today we're going to talk about treatment. This may vary depending on the specific allergen your dog is having a reaction to, but your vet may recommend:

➜ Decontamination - your dog may need a bath using a hypoallergenic cleanser for skin irritations and allergic reactions.

➜ Medication - antihistamines or mild steroids may be given to effectively control your dog's symptoms. Since these allergies are seasonal, these medications may only need to be given throughout the spring months. Be sure to follow your vet's dosage, and never give your dog any over-the-counter antihistamines without his consent.

➜ Environmental Changes - Dogs need to go outside on a regular basis and the pollen in the air from the trees and flowers is unavoidable, but limiting your dog’s time outdoors and keeping him from resting in the grass close to flowering plants is one thing you can do to limit his exposure to potential allergens.

Spring season allergies are temporary, and once you get your dog on a regimen of effective control of his body to the allergens, he will begin to enjoy the outdoors once again!

04/04/2022

Last month, we talked about the difference between food allergies, intolerances, and sensitivities. This week we're going to talk about common allergens, and how to know if your pet is affected by one.

Some pet food companies promote their products as being “allergen-free.” Even more popular is the claim that grain-free diets are better for pets with food intolerances, sensitivities, or allergies. Contrary to these claims, grains happen to be an uncommon cause of food allergies — it's most commonly due to animal proteins!

Most of the food-related allergies seen in dogs are caused by beef, dairy, wheat, chicken, lamb, soy, pork, rabbit, and fish, and for cats it's beef, fish, chicken, and dairy. It’s important to note that most pets do just fine eating foods with these ingredients, and there’s no need to switch them to a different food if they don't display any signs of an allergic reaction.

Common symptoms of food allergies include:
• Dry, itchy skin (dermatitis) - in dogs, it tends to affect the ears, rear ends, stomachs, and paws. In cats, it's most common around the head, neck, and ears.
• Red eyes or eye discharge
• Vomiting and diarrhea
• Hair loss
• Ear infections
Note that these symptoms could also be signs of a virus, parasitic infection, or other illness. Even if you are unsure if they’re having a true allergic reaction, pets should see a vet as soon as signs appear to assess the issue and alleviate any discomfort.

🚗 Taking your pet with you on the road this spring? Here are some tips to make the trip fun and safe for both of you!

🚘 Make frequent stops (about every 2-3 hours) to allow your pet to go to the bathroom and get some exercise. Offer them water at each stop and try to keep your pet's feeding schedule as close to normal as possible.
🚘 Properly restrain your pet in the car. Small pets should be confined in crates or in travel-safe beds, and larger dogs should be appropriately restrained with harnesses attached to the car's seat belts.
🚘 We know this won't give us popularity points for saying so, but pets should not be allowed to ride with their heads outside the window. Dirt and other debris can enter their eyes, ears and nose and cause injury or infection.
🚘 Providing a familiar blanket and/or safe toy can help make your pet more comfortable during the trip.
🚘 Never leave your pet in your vehicle without you.

➜ Food Allergies: What They Are & What They’re Not

Pets can become allergic to certain foods, even if they’ve been on the same diet for years. Food intolerances, sensitivities, or allergies in pets are not as common as many pet food companies let on. In fact, food allergies make up only 10% of allergy cases in dogs and are the third most common type of allergy in cats. Exactly why an intolerances, sensitivities, or allergy develops is uncertain but genetic predisposition is a factor and they can develop and worsen over time.

➜ Allergies, Intolerances, Adverse Food Reactions: What’s the Difference?

A food allergy *could* be the cause of your pet’s itchy skin, ear infection, or upset bowels but it could more than likely be another cause. It is important to understand the difference between a true allergy and other kinds of food sensitivities or intolerances. A food allergy is an immune response that occurs when an animal’s immune system mistakes a protein from food as “an invader rather than a food item." When an animal has difficulty digesting a certain ingredient or nutrient, this is known as an intolerance or food sensitivity.

🎗 Today is National K9 Veterans Day! 🎗 K9 dogs are real-life four-legged superheroes; they protect us, work for justice, and save lives! They have been around ever since 1942, when an organization called Dogs for Defense was founded to train dogs to be sentries for WW2 supply depots. Modern-day working dogs are extremely well trained and incredibly versatile - they sniff out contraband, follow criminals, stand guard as security watchdogs, work in Search and Rescue, and more! K9 dogs are PAWsome, and we thank them for their service!

11/03/2022

🌺 Spring season intolerance, sensitivities, or allergies can occur in all areas of the US that have seasonal times of year. Pollen from trees and flowering plants is normally is released at the beginning of spring through the mid-spring months.

🌺 Symptoms of allergies in dogs may vary, depending on the severity of the allergic reaction, but you'll notice they are similar to symptoms in humans! They may include:
• Sneezing
• Coughing
• Watery eyes
• Itchy eyes
• Runny nose
• Skin irritations
• Red eyes

🌺 Types: There are several different types of allergens that may lead to an allergic reaction in your pet. In the springtime, these may include:
• Tree pollen
• Flowering shrubs
• Fleas
• Stinging insects, such as bees and wasps
• Ticks

🌺 The cause of the symptoms is the direct contact or the inhalation of allergens. Dogs may be allergic to one specific allergen, or multiple allergens during the season.

🌺 If your dog is exhibiting symptoms, make an appointment with your vet. Spring allergies are not always difficult to diagnose because they are seasonal and do not occur all year round, but you will begin to see a pattern of when the dog develops the symptoms and then when they dissipate.
