Alright let us talk dogs and fireworks! Whether you love fireworks or hate them they are going to happen. You can't control what other people do, but you can help your dog get through them.
For dogs you know are scared and have a fear fireworks or a dog that has not been conditioned yet.
Let them out to do their business early, get them nice and tired. Do this on a long leash with a collar or harness that they can't slip out of. (I don't care what type of fence or how good your recall is. This is in preparation of worst case scenario.)
Next set up a "den". Pick a room, just a room. Set up a fan, some noise on the TV at a good level of volume. If your dog is crate trained put their crate in that room. If not set up on smaller spot in the room a corner, put a blanket over a table. This allows them to feel safe. Have their favorite lasting treat or chew in hand to distracted them. A Kong stuffed and frozen is a favorite.
Now here comes the hard part. DON'T fawn over or codel them. DON'T make a big deal out of it. They will pick on the energy you are giving them.
Play a game, set up a dog puzzle, pet them when they are calm.
If you have dog trainer talk to them. If your has high anxiety talk to your vet. Sometimes your dogs reaction can be health relate, such as ear infections. Talk to the experts.
But DON'T let negative behavior become a habit.
