Case of the week!

A 14-year-old, spayed female, DLH cat presented for vomiting, weight loss and a palpable abdominal mass.

Our ultrasound found a severely thickened segment of intestine, enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes, and mild to moderate thickening of jejunum: R/O intestinal mass, diffuse LSA.

The recommended treatment plan includes an ultrasound guided aspirate of the enlarged lymph node and intestinal mass for cytology. Since the likely neoplasia is LSA, chemotherapy is recommended rather than surgical resection.

Case of the Week!

A 9-year-old, neutered male Beagle presented for a rapidly growing mass on his left thigh. The mass was raised, ulcerated, and painful - suspect MCT. A CBC showed an occasional mast cell indicating concern for metastatic disease. An abdominal ultrasound was recommended to see if it is in the spleen, liver or lymph nodes.

Our ultrasound found a left sublumbar mass; R/O metastasis from the leg mass. Small bladder mass; R/O inflammatory polyp vs. early TCC. Right adrenal mass with invasion into the cava; R/O pheochromocytoma.

Unfortunately, this patient has a poor prognosis due to the multiple masses. Client should consider palliative therapy vs. treatment with Palladia.

Case of the Week!

An 11-year-old, neutered, male Puggle came in for vomiting, anorexia, lethargy, weight loss of 7 lbs over a 7-8 month period. X-rays showed abdominal abnormalities.

Our ultrasound found a severely distended loop of bowel with stricture: R/O obstruction due to neoplasia vs inflammatory process. Hepatic and splenic nodules: R/O benign hyperplastic nodules.

Exploratory surgery was recommended to assess intestinal obstruction and to biopsy liver at time of surgery.

Case of the week!

A 12-year-old, neutered male DSH feline came in for vomiting, inappropriate urination, and lethargy. X-rays showed abdominal mass which is able to be felt on palpation.

Our ultrasound showed a 4.5cm complex pancreatic mass. A fine-needle aspirate of the mass was performed. The cytology came back as mixed inflammation, necrosis and neoplasia with pancreatic adenocarcinoma as the likely differential.

Case of the week!

2-year-old Dachshund mix presented with a fever that was not responsive to antibiotics, elevated WBC's, normal chemistry, vomiting phlegm, and weight loss over the previous 2 weeks.

Our abdominal ultrasound revealed a dilated stomach and a thickened wall of the pylorus. An endoscopy with biopsies or an exploratory laparotomy with biopsies to rule out a pyloric hypertrophy vs. an infiltrative disease was recommended.

Case of the Week!

A 6-year-old, spayed female German Shepherd presented for a 4-day history of not feeling well and decreased appetite. The primary veterinarian thought they felt a mid-abdominal mass, approximately 5 cm, movable and firm. Patient was panting a lot at home.

Our ultrasound found multifocal hepatic neoplasia-carcinoma vs. other. Pleural effusion- metastatic disease. This carries a poor prognosis. Thoracocentesis and fluid analysis were recommended.

Case of the Week!

A 14-year-old spayed female DSH presented for an approximate 8-month history of intermittent urinary issues, inappropriate urination, hematuria, and possible incontinence. Additionally, the bladder felt thickened on exam.

Our ultrasound uncovered a thickened bladder with a mass, possible Transitional Cell Carcinoma. Client should consider surgery for partial cystectomy versus palliative therapy with piroxicam.

Case of the Week!

Approximately 4-year-old, neutered male, Pitbull mix was recently adopted with a known diagnosis of pulmonic stenosis and presented for evaluation of same.

Our echocardiogram confirmed pulmonic stenosis while also revealing a congenital VSD, severe MR/TR, severe pulmonary hypertension, possible aortic stenosis, peritoneal effusion, and an arrhythmia. Our team recommended a very detailed treatment plan of medications and balloon valvuloplasty after consideration of the congenital defect.

Case of the Week!

13-year-old DSH male feline presented for hyporexia, frequent vomiting, weight loss for 3 weeks and a mild elevation of the PSL.

Our abdominal ultrasound revealed a duodenal mass concerning for LSA or carcinoma. Thoracic radiographs were recommended to check for metastasis and a fine needle aspirate of the mass. However, due to the anatomic location surgical resection may not be an option. The difficult decision was made for the pet to be humanely euthanized.

Case of the Week!

11-year-old, spayed female, Jack Russell Terrier presented for hematuria and increased frequency of urination. The patient was not responsive to Amoxicillin. X-rays were taken but no obvious uroliths were visualized.

Our ultrasound findings revealed a large irregular mass in the bladder which was highly suspicious for TCC and CADET braf testing was recommended to confirm.
