March is Pet Poison Prevention Month! It's important to keep pets safe from common household toxins and outdoor hazards. Human-safe ingredients like xylitol, common human medications, and even several flowers can be deadly for pets. Outdoor hazards such as rodent poison and lawn treatment chemicals can be avoided by keeping a close eye on your pet when you are on a walk.

Take action now to pet-proof your home and be aware of what’s harmful. Learn more about household hazards from the AVMA here: https://www.avma.org/resources-tools/pet-owners/petcare/household-hazards

Zoo nutritionists are often faced with myriad misinformation or misconceptions when designing appropriate diets for animals in our care. It is challenging to apply relentless skepticism to most of the information available in popular and peer-reviewed articles that are available, yet it is a necessary exercise in order to ensure the best nutritional welfare. Both historic and most recent examples of myths within the field of zoo nutrition, will be discussed in this presentation with Michael Maslanka to hopefully set some of them straight, and share how their impact can be minimized for the good of our animals.

This webinar is free to all AAVN members. The cost for non-members is $20. Sign up here: https://aavnutrition.org/event-5884266

While some pet owners may feel that some extra weight may help their pet feel warmer in dropping temperatures, it's important to keep your pet at a healthy weight year-round, including winter. The health risks associated with overfeeding outweigh any potential benefits. You can read more about cold weather pet safety from the AVMA here: https://www.avma.org/resources-tools/pet-owners/petcare/cold-weather-animal-safety

Talk to your veterinarian about your pet's nutritional needs during the winter, and use our calorie calculator tool to get an idea of how much you should be feeding your pet based on their current body condition: https://petnutritionalliance.org/resources/calorie-calculator?type=dogs
