~The Story of Cartwright Cattery is a family story💕
The name Cartwright comes from a fictional ranch in the setting of the old west TV series that was my Grandpa’s
(aka Papaw) favorite show. My Daughter Riley carries on his Birth name, My Son Camden Prater carries on his last name.
~Camden has his very beloved, very old kitty named babyface! She more than doubles his age at 15 and change in 2021!

Babyface is a Maine C**n/ Siberian half breed little runt from a litter from a decade and a half ago! The whole litter was an accident and I kept all eleven kittens! I was young and just didn’t know my cat at the time was able to get pregnant so soon!
~We all live and learn! Lucky for me I learned SO much growing up with the most amazing Papaw who taught me so much about animals and was lucky to grow up with show dogs, hunting dogs, horses and every animal under the sun you can think of! But...back to babyface, I can reminisce about my Papaw forever. Babyface and Camden have quite the inseparable bond!
~Early 2021, we had a very terrifying experience! Babyface was ...not well (trigger details avoided!) but let’s just say we spent more than a few thousand dollars to keep her alive, and spent even more than that in sleepless stressed hours nursing her back to health! Camden was especially upset, further stressing Mommy to the max to phrase it gently!
“She is our only kitty I thought”
I don’t know how long she is going to make it, and nothing will ever replace her when she’s gone, but we need a transition kitty A.S.A.P.! Camden is already devastated and needs to bond with a new kitty, because unfortunately...Babyface just won’t live forever. The hunt for a Blue smoke with white-mitted kitty was exhausting to say the least! (We did look into every shelter in a 3 state radius but with COVID and pre-kitten season/no luck- an older cat just wasn’t in the card for us with 2 kids, a hyper dog and a senior fragile kitty)
~So many breeders, so many personalities! Some want to know you like a best friend / while others want bare bones buisness details and bottom lines. So many litters and beautiful babies to choose from and so many wait lists and deposits! At one point I had almost a thousand dollars in deposits! It seemed dismal.
~My Daughter Riley decided to get in on the chase and found a few she liked!-one being a $50,000 Serval! (Yeah-no!)
After searching from curly golden Tennessee Rex to Singapura’s, Ragdolls to Maine C**ns, we decided on a Maine C**n just like I’ve always had and knew what to expect. Maine C**ns are really just in a class by themselves in my opinion.
~Riley wanted a black one SO much! So my search became increasingly difficult! We figured...Camden is young, he will like any kitty-no worries. Onward with the search....
~The endless search, the more I look, the pickier I became. Then I started learning more about what the breed standard was because a lot of these cats out there look very very different! I didn’t want to get a cat with a ton of health problems etc...(another little nugget of info I learned from my Papaw- but he bred dogs) so the more I learn, the more scrutinizing I was with the breeders pages I was looking at.
~then I started thinking...the whole world is shut down, the kids are homeschooled, my daughter is an aspiring veterinarian- specifically in the area of big cat care, rehabilitation and conservation...what if we had our OWN Cattery!?!?
~So I looked into it, I had a meeting with my veterinarian of 25 years about details, decisions, financial responsibility and overall commitment and had his support. Then, we went over what seemed like a million names and we enjoyed every moment choosing it together! We had some good laughs and crossed off some very silly ones!
~I registered with C.F.A. and we are off to the races! Off like a herd of turtles! (or...shows & exhibitions in this case, lol) and not very fast while the world is closed for COVID! However this is actually perfect for us and we can put all of our time and effort into concentrating on our new venture as a family. The Cartwright Cattery. I finally found a beautiful long hair, fluffy, black Maine C**n! One of the breeders I was corresponding with sent me a message about the availability of this female kitten AND it happened to be black! Riley was in heaven! Camden was excited, I couldn’t wait to see her! She was delivered in the middle of the night and she was just perfect and we all loved her at first sight! We changed her name a few times but...
Her Majesty the First Queen of Cartwright Cattery is to be called Irena 🐈‍⬛🐾
Well for now she’s quite the little princess and spoiled doesn’t quite describe the overindulged situation here! She’s a bit clumsy in her tween stage, but it doesn’t seem to bother her a bit! She’s into and ON everything, and is more of a thief than any ferret around! She likes hummus and pita bread, Doritos and mashed potatoes...she will literally eat anything you have on your plate and she’s a PIG! We all share with her, it’s hard not to!
~while Camden loves her, he doesn’t have the bond he has with his old lady babyface-I think she just looks over him and he knows it. Riley has never been happier and it’s no secret she’s my little sweetheart! He has expressed that he would like to have a “boy kitty” (understandably- he’s outnumbered 5/1 here!)
Hopefully our new addition of Irena’s future boyfriend next month will be just what Camdens dreams are made of, and pending all good test results and clean bills of health, we will have a gorgeous new Maine C**n litters to come 💖

Now, where do we get the willpower to NOT keep all the kittens!
