Update on our rescues down in Oklahoma…

Everyone is super healthy! All mares have put on a lot of weight and the babies are growing like weeds.

They’re still at the quarantine facility in Oklahoma but now that the goals are old enough, we’re working on getting them transported up to South Dakota to continue their healing ❤️‍🩹, start training and find their forever homes 🏡

Livvy injury update!

Livvy’s injury is healing and closing up nicely. I even caught her running out in the pasture.

Also she did eat all her antibiotics tablets. Being grain/food motivated definitely helps.

We need to raise about $2000 for Livvy and we need your help now!... This crazy girl once again cut herself on god knows what, but it's bad this time. We did a temporary first aid on her by cleaning it up and bandaging it, but it's looking like she may need stitches. NOT TO MENTION the fact that her front ankle still hasn't completely healed either which needs to be looked at again.

Livvy is our primary therapy horse, so this is really setting things back and throws a wrench into our sessions.

This is not going to be a quick and easy fix and we need your help! PLease donate whatever you can, share this post far and wide and help us get Livvy healed and healthy enough to do sessions again!

And just like that….we have us another big vet bill. 💸

Livvy cut her back leg super deep (no bone showing) and is going to coat us over $1,000 to have the Vet come out, sedate her, give her stitches and then continue her care until fully healed.

Livvy is our main therapy horse so this is setting back our Veteran services a bit, so we’re pivoting to expedite Captain and America’s training to fill in.

‼️ 🚨 ATTENTION Rapid City 🚨 ‼️

We have a free plant, alert!!

A part of our mission is to make our community mentally and physically healthier. So we started growing free produce for our homeless veterans last year.

This year we’re aiming to help those in need who may not be veterans. One way we’re doing that is by providing FREE VEGGIE PLANTS!!

You must be in the Black Hills area - we’re not mailing them. We’re working with rapid City to set up a day at one of the parks to give out these plants. If you’re a canner or know one, let them know. We have loads of dill which is perfect for pickling.

If you know you definitely need/want them, DM us and we can coordinate a meet up.

On today’s episode of Veteran Horse Training, things got a little intense.

One of our Veterans is continuing to work with Livvy and now that they have a foundation in trust, communication and pressure, we decided to step it up a notch.

Livvy HATES to have her hooves touched so today we dove into that a bit with fly boot training. Livvy freaked out often and tried to kick at the fly boots, but our Veteran leaned into his training of managing his emotions, having patience and staying in control (how to safely control Livvy).

As our Veteran said, “that got intense, but I can see why it’s so important to stay in control (emotionally and physically). It was nice to dive into the deep end a bit and really practice what I’ve learned.”

Moral of the story… keep working hard and STAY CONSISTENT! Those two together will help you accomplish anything.

Also I was way wrong about his registered info. He was born in 2019, so he’s 5 and his registered name is Ima Cool Invitation. Also his papers say Sorel Overo, but when you look at him there’s no mistaking that he’s a red dun overo.

With permission, here is one of our Veterans who is in our Horse Training Program.

We are a nonprofit horse rescue that provides free equine assisted services to Veterans. One of our services is Horse Training. Not only is the Veteran learning the horsemanship skills to communicate and train that horse, but they are learning emotion regulation and healthy ways to manage their emotions.

This is a Marine Veteran who is in our Horse Training program and he’s learning the basics of communication and pressure.

In this training he worked with Livvy and a more stubborn horse, Blu.

Suns out means flies out!!

Y’all remember our brother/sister duo, Captain and America?? 🇺🇸 🛡️

When we got them 1 year ago they were slightly underweight, hooves needed work and they needed to be fully trained.

Well now that they’ve put weight on and moving better, we’re continuing their training.

For now we’re working on Fly Boot and fly mask training. With the sun out and a very mild winter the flies are TERRIBLE.

We’re working on getting everyone fly sheets, so if you have extras or would like to help out, please consider donating!!

Remember how they said they were still walking to this day??

Well the truth is that they never made it. We had to call an audible and abort mission.

Fancy has trailer trauma so wouldn’t load and a new deep fear of bridges.

So Leah will continue to trailer train her and help her overcome her fears, THEN we’ll get her moved to our new location

We can’t thank our volunteers enough for coming out on such a hot day to help one of our community members.

We got quite a bit of the yard work done, but we’re not done yet so we will be coordinating future Volunteer Day to help us finish the rest of the work.

This Sunday, June 23rd at 1pm MST, we are doing yard work at the new property to help the owner out and thank him for the free rent.

He is physically unable to do any physical labor . We have about 1 acre that will need leaves ranked, grass trimmed, branches trimmed, weeds pulled etc.

We will be grilling hot dogs and hamburgers over the fire and making s’mores.

Even if you can only come out for 30 min, we could use your help!!

Ok ok, I know I’m WAY behind in posting our updates, fundraisers and everything.

As some of you know, we moved our horses to new pastures that had super tall grass since they’ve turned our current location in a dry lot.

We split them into 2 groups for now so Captain and America get their own pasture and finally get to put on the last few pounds they need.

Then Livvy, Honey and Blu went to a pasture at a great property we’re helping the owner with.

…. You may notice I haven’t mention Leah’s horse Fancy… well fancy was supposed to go with Livvy and all them, but refused to go on the trailer.

So we temporarily put her with Captain and America.

One thing with cowgirls…we’ll always find a way. This morning Leah got Fancy ready and began to walk/ride Fancy to the other pasture 7 miles away.

Some say they’re still walking lol

We have a foal finally, y’all!!!!

Della finally release her prisoner and it’s a beautiful bay c**t. He was born upside down so there was worry at first, but he’s doing really well and healthy! His name is Flint, which means strength, durability and resilience - talk about origin story, right?!

Despite Della being super underweight she’s doing amazingly well and is overproducing milk!

Our girls and lil c**t down in Oklahoma need your help.

Weekly board continues to be $600. Plus our vet bills are starting to build as we still wait for Della to foal. Then we need to test/retest everyone for strangles and influenza so we can prepare them to be transported…. Then there’s the transportation costs.

As you can see it just keeps adding up. Transportation for 2 is going to cost us 1800, then when Della and her baby are clear to transport they will cost 1500, testing costs $400 per horse, then we need to anticipate about 30 more days of board which is about 2400.

We need to raise $7000 to ensure we continue their care and have them safely in the quarantine facility until we can transport them.

Running a nonprofit is hard. Rescuing horses is hard.

But it’s moments like these, watching the storm roll away, and just peacefully being with the horses that helps rejuvenate us. Helps remind us that what we’re doing matters.

No matter how bad the storm is right now, remember storms always roll away at some point. So don’t give up!! Stand a little longer! Your storm is about to pass!!
