It’s REACTIVE group training day! We will be meeting at The Barketplace Tinley Park and walking over to our outdoor training area. We ask that new dogs that have more intense dog reactivity bring a muzzle. Once we are able to properly assess your dogs’s type of reactivity, the muzzle will be used less and less.

The Prowess k9 team has some news! We have received many many requests to assist more reactive dogs. You have asked so we have answered! We will be offering 2 reactive classes a week. However, this change means we will officially be cutting back on our intermediate classes effectively immediately. Prowess K9 lives and breathes to help families keep their dogs at home. Reactive dogs are the 1st to be re-homed or surrendered. More and more dogs are suffering from reactivity and we want to help. Our reactive classes will be Wednesdays at 7pm and Sunday at 4:30pm.

Reactive dogs are dogs that overreact to certain stimuli or situations, typically showing heightened emotional responses like barking, lunging, growling, or whining. This behavior is often triggered by things that make the dog feel threatened or uncomfortable, such as other dogs, people, cars, or loud noises.

Possible Causes of Reactivity

1. Fear or Anxiety: Many reactive dogs are fearful. They may have had negative experiences in the past, or they might be naturally more anxious.

2. Lack of Socialization: Dogs that haven't been exposed to a variety of experiences, people, and other animals during their critical socialization period (usually up to about 16 weeks of age) can become reactive.

3. Frustration: Some dogs become reactive out of frustration, especially if they are restrained on a leash and can't approach something they want to investigate or interact with.

4. Protective Instincts: Dogs may react aggressively out of a desire to protect their owner, their territory, or themselves.

Managing and Reducing Reactivity

1. Desensitization and Counterconditioning: Gradually exposing the dog to the trigger at a distance where they don’t react, and pairing the exposure with something positive (like treats), can help change their response over time.

2. Training and Commands: Teaching the dog alternative behaviors, such as focusing on you or sitting calmly, can help redirect their attention away from the trigger.

3. Using Equipment: Muzzles can be used as a safety measure in more extreme cases. Muzzles don’t have to be used forever but that are a great training tool.

4. Creating Distance: If you know your dog is likely to react to something, increasing the distance between your dog and the trigger can help manage their reaction.

The The Barketplace Tinley Park needs our help! A gofund.me was started for Amanda let’s show our support! Almost 3 years ago Sarah walked into the store and the rest is history. We have hosted adoption events, our weekly training classes and even shed tears as owning a small business is very hard. She’s not just a business owner she’s our friend 🐾💜 https://gofund.me/c08492cb

Happy Monday, friends. I was incredibly lucky to be able to step away for the weekend and clear my mind, so thank you so much to Molly and Emily for being here to run the show while I took a much needed break. Now that I've sorted some stuff for me, it's time to be honest. This is getting harder every day. People aren't out shopping the way they were, we've taken some hard hits, and costs keep rising. We still haven't bounced back from our hit from the block party. Every hit we take puts us further and further behind. I don't know how much more we can keep digging ourselves back from. I think this is our last leg.

I love my place in this community. The relationships I've built, the partnerships I've formed, the friend I've made. I hold the charities, rescues, and organizations we've donated to our helped support in one way or another so close to my heart. The Barketplace has been my dream for as long as I can remember. I'm fighting tooth and nail to hold on, I just want to be honest, my grip is slipping.

We need support. We know our shelves aren't full the way we would like. We're frustrated too. We're doing our best. If you help us catch up we'll get them full again. We hope to remain your dogs favorite store.

The Prowess K9 team has received quite a few inquiries about Service Dog training. Now let’s talk about the different types. Most importantly, emotional support dogs are not service animals. Emotional support dogs and service dogs serve different roles and have distinct definitions and legal protections.

1st we have Emotional Support Dogs

- Purpose: Provide comfort and emotional support to individuals with mental health issues or emotional disorders.
- Training: Not required to undergo specific training to perform tasks; their presence alone is therapeutic.
- Legal Protections: Covered under the Fair Housing Act (FHA), which allows them to live with their owners in housing with "no pets" policies. They are also permitted on airplanes under certain conditions by the Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA).
- Public Access: Not granted the same public access rights as service dogs. They can be denied entry to public places like restaurants, stores, and other non-pet-friendly areas.

Now we have Service Dogs

- Purpose: Trained to perform specific tasks to assist individuals with disabilities, such as guiding the blind, alerting deaf individuals, pulling a wheelchair, or detecting seizures.
- Training: Must undergo extensive training to perform tasks directly related to the person's disability.
- Legal Protections: Covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which grants them full public access rights. They can accompany their handlers to almost all public places.
- Public Access: Allowed in all public places, including restaurants, stores, and public transportation, regardless of "no pets" policies.

In summary, while both types of dogs provide essential support to their handlers, service dogs are trained to perform specific tasks and have broader legal protections, including public access rights. Emotional support dogs provide comfort through their presence and have more limited legal protections, mainly concerning housing and air travel.

We’re back with training tip Fridays!

Training a dog to make eye contact can strengthen your bond and improve communication. Here’s a simple method to teach eye contact:

You are welcome to mark the behavior with a clicker or use the word YES when your pup looks at you.

Steps:

1. **Choose a Quiet Environment**: Start in a calm, distraction-free area.

2. **Get Your Dog’s Attention**: Hold a treat near your eyes or at your forehead.

3. **Wait for Eye Contact**: Your dog might look at the treat first, but be patient. As soon as your dog looks at your eyes, mark the behavior with a clicker or a verbal cue like “Yes!”

4. **Reward**: Immediately give your dog the treat after marking the behavior.

5. **Repeat**: Practice this several times in short sessions (5-10 minutes).

6. **Add a Cue**: Once your dog consistently makes eye contact, introduce a cue like “Look” or “Watch me” just before you expect eye contact.

7. **Increase Difficulty**: Gradually increase distractions and practice in different environments.

- Practice regularly to reinforce the behavior.
- Always reward your dog for making eye contact to encourage the behavior.
- Be patient and avoid frustration if your dog doesn’t catch on immediately.

By reinforcing eye contact, you enhance your dog’s focus on you, making other training tasks easier.
