Most "issues" people have with their dogs are simply the dogs being dogs. We put a lot of pressure on the dogs in our lives to conform to our human-centric way of life without putting forth the effort to try to understand theirs. When you understand the reasons behind your dog's behavior, suddenly the "issue" fades away and you can finally understand each other.

I've been quiet on social media since the holidays. Our household has been very busy with kid stuff. Between school, illnesses, and after-school activities, I'm tapped out! Thank goodness summer is coming!

What's your favorite spring/summer activities? I love gardening and have been outside setting up a new flower bed. I plan on getting out this week to set up my daughter's fairy garden for the season.

There's some fantastic information in this article about Emotional Support Animals. I see so many "certifications" online for ESAs but the fact is, none of these organizations are legitimate. They are taking advantage of people by intentionally misleading them to make money. If you feel that you would benefit from an ESA, speak with your mental health professional.

Are you taking your dog on a walk today? Don't forget your treat pouch! The outside world sure is interesting and sometimes it's hard for a dog to pay attention to their owner when there are so many exciting things to sniff.

Level that playing field by bringing along your treat pouch and some really smelly and tasty treats. Your dog will happily take a break from sniffing to get rewarded for a job well done and you will be able to reward your dog for walking nicely and checking in with you. Win win!

In order for our dogs to get it right, we need to allow them to be confident enough to try, offer and progress. This all comes more naturally when we allow them to confidently make mistakes.

The same goes for us. You wouldn’t be able to look back and say ‘I wish I’d done it differently’, if you hadn’t made those mistakes in the first place. Mistakes are what progresses us, keeps us unstuck and helps us grow. Mistakes are never really mistakes at all.

How do you get that perfect heel that we all dream about? Practice of course! 🐕 We all know that practice makes perfect, but we rarely put in the time to make it a reality. If you want good leash walking skills from your dog, you must make time to practice. 💯 Dogs aren't born with the understanding that a rope attached to a human means they need to walk a certain way. It's up to us as their guardians and teachers to show them how to act while on a leash. 🐶 Do you struggle with leash skills with your dog? Imagine you are involved in a car accident. You are fine but, understandably shaken. Your significant other arrives and starts to give you a hug but the paramedic at the scene interrupts and tells them, "Better not comfort them, you might reinforce their fear." If the above scenario sounds ludicrous, good, you're a normal human! Unfortunately, this exact information is shared and reshared about dogs. Here's the truth, fear is an emotion and you can't reinforce an emotion. What you can do, is help the animal deal with their emotions by being a loving and comforting presence. Marty will tolerate having his nails trimmed, and he's a very good boy so I don't have much trouble during nail trim time. However, I want him to be completely comfortable and even happy to have his nails done! So we have been practicing cooperative care training. Since Marty already knows Shake, it was easy to transform that into a longer hold and then slowly add the clippers to the training. With time, we will work up to clipping his nails, but for now we are working on moving the clippers to his nail while he rests his paw in my hand. We won't actually clip a nail until he is ready and willing. That's the amazing thing about cooperative care training. The animals actually have a say in what happens to them and they actively participate in their own care! Did you know that trainers in zoos use the same techniques to train elephants and lions to cooperate in their vet care? Treats are fantastic for teaching new behaviors like sit, down, stay etc... But did you know that you can use other reinforcers for training as well? Avocado is obsessed with playing fetch. It's his most favorite thing in the whole world! He loves it so much that he will even drop the ball and sit for me to throw it. We were able to train this by starting with two balls. He would fetch one, bring it back and we would then show him the second ball. He would see the second ball and drop the first. His reward for dropping the ball was getting to chase the new one. After evolving the game through training and proper timing, he is now dropping the ball and sitting for the next throw. The "go to bed" cue can be incredibly useful for all dogs. Imagine being able to send your dog to a specific location when you need them out from underfoot. Little Dolly learned the "go to bed" cue in just a few minutes! Lots of rewards in her bed and she chooses to go there instead of begging at the kitchen table or trying to rush out the door when people come over!

Hi! I'm Jenna. My family and I just moved to the Dayton area from San Antonio, Texas. My husband, Dustin, and I have an almost 2 year old daughter named Ava, two dogs and one cat. I've been a certified dog trainer for 10 years and have been working in shelters for the past 5. I'm excited to start a new chapter by opening my new training business, Barkademics! Dogs are family and should be treated with kindness and respect. My training techniques are science-based positive reinforcement. All dogs have the ability and desire to learn if we take the time to teach them.
