A new species of dwarfgoby, 𝐸𝑣𝑖𝑜𝑡𝑎 𝑡𝑎𝑒𝑖𝑎𝑒 n. sp. is described from Nuusafee Island, Samoa.

The new species is a member of the 𝐸𝑣𝑖𝑜𝑡𝑎 𝑔𝑢𝑡𝑡𝑎𝑡𝑎 complex that includes 𝐸. 𝑔𝑢𝑡𝑡𝑎𝑡𝑎, 𝐸. 𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑎𝑒, and 𝐸. 𝑎𝑙𝑏𝑜𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑎𝑡𝑎, and is characterized by a complete cephalic sensory-canal pore pattern (pattern 1); a dorsal/anal-fin formula of 9/8; the first 7-10 pectoral-fin rays unbranched, the remainder branched; the fifth pelvic-fin ray 10-12% of length of the fourth ray; pelvic-fin-ray branches short, broad, and connected by membranes; distinct dark spots present on ventral side of head; the eye with four to six white spokes radiating outwards from pupil and separating red-orange on iris; rectangular blocks on the ventral half of the body taller than wide and separated from each other by narrow yellow bars less than a pupil diameter; and a red-orange blotch behind the eye connected to a red-orange spot at the back of the interorbital area.

𝗘𝘁𝘆𝗺𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆
The specific epithet is named for Sue Miller Taei, a passionate and highly respected marine conservationist who dedicated her career to the reefs and peoples of the Pacific “Oceanscape”, and especially to her native Samoa. Sue tragically passed away shortly after this beautiful new species was discovered, and it is an honor to name the species in her memory.

An idea of what to say:

The directive made by Commissioner Barreto at the February Commission Meeting is completely impractical and is actually counterproductive to the work being done by the Non-native Species Technical Assistance Group.

While the Commissioners do oversee FWC, this does not mean they have total power and FWC is not required to obey unsound directives.

All Florida responsible animal owners are concerned with biosecurity and protecting Florida’s environment.

Short-sighted demands from those unfamiliar with the businesses that make up Florida’s animal industry will create more problems than those they claim to be solving.

Collective punishment and treating all of Florida’s animal business owners like criminals and black market smugglers is unjust and unfounded.

We continually hear Commissioners and FWC Staff state, “We know you are responsible and you are not the problem.” to those who spend their time showing up to speak at Commission. However, even the good business owners are tossed into the same pile as the bad actors through FWC’s continued overreaching, arbitrary, and capricious rules.

FWC is required to write “reasonable rules.” This Commissioner directive is unreasonable and irrational.

Rather than writing rules that focus on the bad business owners and criminals, FWC’s recent rules and proposals prejudicially label all businesses as unacceptable and unreasonably dictate that no animal business can be responsible.

“We are not going to destroy businesses.” has been repeated by Commissioners, yet businesses are continually destroyed.

A whitelist approach is a business killer! Additionally, even a representative for the United States Fish and Wildlife Service recently stated that the whitelist approach is flawed.

First collected on submersible diving expeditions during the 1980s in the Bahamas and Cuba, and later at Curaçao, Dominica, and Roatan is now getting an official description.

𝗔𝗯𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁
Submersible diving in the 1980/90s in the Bahamas and Cuba and 2013–2018 at Curaçao, Dominica, and Roatan resulted in the collection of a new species of 𝑃𝑜𝑙𝑦𝑙𝑒𝑝𝑖𝑜𝑛, a genus of wrasse previously known only from the Indian and Pacific Oceans. The new species, which inhabits the rariphotic reef-fish faunal zone at depths of 219–457 m, is another example of a deep-reef species belonging to a largely shallow-reef family, in this case the family Labridae.

Here, we describe the new species and provide a phylogenetic placement for it by adding new sequence data from 12 genetic markers for the new species and one of its two congeners (𝑃. 𝑐𝑟𝑢𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑢𝑚 from the eastern Pacific Ocean) to a previously published dataset comprising 336 species of wrasses that includes the other congener, 𝑃. 𝑟𝑢𝑠𝑠𝑒𝑙𝑙𝑖, from the Indian and West/Central Pacific Oceans.

Our results resolve the phylogenetic history of the species of 𝑃𝑜𝑙𝑦𝑙𝑒𝑝𝑖𝑜𝑛 and provide the first molecular support for the monophyly of the genus.

Named in honor of Richard Grant Gilmore, Jr., in recognition of the contributions he has made to our knowledge of the western Atlantic and Caribbean deep-reef fish fauna, including the first discovery of the new 𝑃𝑜𝑙𝑦𝑙𝑒𝑝𝑖𝑜𝑛.
