It is with great sadness that the Board of Directors of The Hooved Animal Sanctuary has officially voted to dissolve the non profit rescue. The current pandemic has proven too much as the rescue had been unable to sustain normal fundraising or grants. Additionally, the farm the sanctuary has called home for the past three years is currently for sale and may soon have new owners. For over 15 years The Hooved Animal Sanctuary has helped to save the lives of hundreds of Hooved animals (and even a few without hooves!). The amazing work of the volunteers and donors who have kept the sanctuary running for so many wonderful years will never be forgotten. The sanctuary would never have existed without a few steadfast volunteers who saw the need for someone to speak for the voiceless animals of Vermont. In the coming weeks the sanctuary's assets will be sold through our page to dispense the non profit's assets. All of the funds raised will continue to care for the four remaining horses truly retired in sanctuary for the remainder of their lives. Any additional funds will be used to sustain a hay bank for needy horses in honor of Deb Baker, without whom the sanctuary would not exist. It has been the greatest pleasure of our lives helping to save horses, donkeys, mules, and so many other animals over the past fifteen years. If you have a HAS alumni, please share an update below. Continue to go out and do good in this world no matter how difficult 💜🐴💜

We take special pride in making sure each our of rescues end up at a forever home that is perfect for them. It may take a little longer for our horses to get adopted, but we make sure every single one ends up where they will be loved and cared for forever! Check out Scarlett and her new brother Playdoh taking a nap together in her new home this week ❤️🐴

Scarlett has been slowly started back under saddle this last past week. Today she carried her first rider around for a ride and was a perfect lady! Even in a pandemic, life on a horse farm must go on 🐴🌄🐎

While we are all struggling to keep HAS open, we have effectively stopped taking surrender applications. We have very little money and feed left to care for the few horses we have been able to help. If you are a horse owner struggling to care for your animals please find some links below from a fellow rescue to help you through this difficult time.

Thanks to COVID-19, rescues all over the country are simply trying to survive. Many have frozen intake and are not taking in more horses right now.

Unfortunately, lots of horse owners are struggling themselves when it comes to keeping food in the barn for their own horses.

Due to job losses and financial insecurity, horse owners are being forced to give their horses up... and rescues can’t take them in.

The only way we can “weather this storm” is to keep as many horses in their homes as possible. These are loved horses that simply have owners who are going through a rough patch. Rescues can’t absorb those horses, but we CAN offer help to the owners.

Below, we have listed a bunch of resources for people who need assistance with hay, grain, board, and veterinary costs. Keeping horses at home should be a unified goal among the equine community right now. It’s the only way we will survive this.

If push comes to shove and you need help, reach out. Apply for the assistance.

If you find yourself more fortunate than some and would like to donate to help people who need it, many of the programs below are accepting donations to keep their assistance flowing.

There are also some links listed with tips on how to safely re-home your horses if keeping them isn’t an option.

Let’s try to keep as many horses at home as possible!

If anyone has other links to programs like these, feel free to message us and we will add them to this post!
