Consistency is Key: Mastering Communication with Your Dog

Consistency is the foundation of effective dog training. It helps your dog learn faster by reducing confusion and building trust. Here are a few simple ways to keep your training consistent and effective:

1. Say a Command Once
Avoid repeating commands like “sit, sit, SIT!”—it teaches your dog to only respond after multiple cues. Say the command once and help them follow through immediately. As Sam Ivy says: “Giving a command once is instructing. Saying it twice is asking. Saying it three times is begging—and we never beg our dogs.”

2. Be Clear with Marker Words
Words like “Good” and “Goooood girl” can sound different to your dog. Use consistent words and tones for rewards and corrections, like “yes,” “no,” or “free.” Clear communication helps your dog understand exactly what they’re doing right—or wrong.

3. Set Your Dog Up for Success
