Ornaments, candles, tinsel, ribbons and wrapping paper seem to be everywhere! There are lilies, holly, mistletoe, and a tree in the living room. Grandmaโ€™s chocolate chocolate chip powdered sugar cookies are cooling on the counter and there are Christmas candies in every dish at dog-nose level โ€“ even the sugar-free kind for Aunt Bonnie because of her diabetes. Soon enough the kids will return from college and Uncle Jimmy will be the pets center of attention, doling out the fat from the ham. Everywhere your pets turn thereโ€™s another hazard staring them in the face โ€“ or worse โ€“ taunting them.

This holiday season I ask the families that share their lives with pets to keep in mind the impact it has on their furry friendโ€™s world. Yes, of course, you can still put up the tree but this is a great year to save the environment and get that fake one you have been talking about. That ornament made from the salt dough by your niece is super cute but could kill your pets if ingested and as for Uncle Jimmy, watch him โ€“ heโ€™s one food scrap away from sending Max to the ER vet with pancreatitis.

Cold Weather Tips For Dog And Cats
Check out these guidelines to protect your companion animal when the temperature drops.

1. Never leave your dog or cat alone in a car during cold weather. A car can act as a refrigerator in the winter, holding in the cold. Your companion animal could freeze to death.
2. If it's too cold outside for you then it's too cold outside for your pets.
3. Never let your dog off the leash on snow or ice, especially during a snowstorm. Dogs frequently lose their scent in snow and ice and easily become lost. They may panic in a snowstorm and run away. More dogs are lost during the winter than during any other season.
4. Keep your cat inside. Outdoors, cats can freeze, become lost or stolen, or be injured or killed. Cats who are allowed to stray are exposed to fatal infectious diseases, including rabies. During the winter, outdoor cats sometimes choose to sleep under the hoods of cars, where it is warmer. Then, when the motor is started, the cat can be injured or killed in the fan belt. To prevent this, bang loudly on the hood of your car and wait a few seconds before starting the engine, to give a cat a chance to escape.
5. Antifreeze, even in very tiny doses, is a lethal poison for dogs and cats. Because of its sweet taste, dogs are attracted to it. Be sure to thoroughly clean up any spills from your vehicle. Call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center if you suspect your animal has ingested poison.
6. Thoroughly wipe off your dogโ€™s legs and stomach when she comes in out of the rain, snow or ice. Check her sensitive paw pads, which may bleed from snow or ice encrusted in them. Also, salt, antifreeze or other chemicals could hurt your dog if she ingests them while licking her paws.
7. If your dog is sensitive to the cold due to age, illness or breed type, take him outdoors only long enough to relieve himself.
8. Puppies do not tolerate the cold as well as adult dogs and may be difficult to house train during the winter. If necessary, paper train your puppy inside if he appears to be sensitive to the weather.
9. If your dog spends a lot of time engaged in outdoor activities, increase his supply of food, particularly protein, to keep his fur thick and healthy.
10. If you own a short-haired breed, consider getting a warm coat or sweater for your dog. Look for one with a high collar or turtleneck that covers your dog from the base of her tail on top and to the belly underneath. While this may seem like a luxury, it is a necessity for many dogs.
11. Never shave your dog down to the skin in winter. Leave the coat in a longer style, which provides more warmth. Remember that such a style will require more frequent brushing due to dry winter air and static electricity. When you bathe your dog, make sure she is completely dry before you take her out for a walk.
12. Make sure your companion animal has a warm place to sleep far away from all drafts and off the floor, such as in a dog or cat bed or basket with a warm blanket or pillow in it. See less

Today, December 7, 2023, we remember and honor the 2,403 United States soldiers and citizens who were killed in the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii on December 7, 1941. Eighty two years ago today, the bombing of Pearl Harbor catapulted the United States into World War II. Thousands of young American men enlisted.
The event also inspired four dog lovers to persuade the U. S. military to put dogs to work defending the country.

Using dogs in war certainly wasnโ€™t a new idea. They have served in war since ancient times. In World War I, German, Belgian and British armies used dogs to pull guns and supplies on wheeled carriages and wagons. They located and gave comfort to the wounded, carried messages and pulled telephone lines from one spot to another.

The U.S. had never had a formal military working dog training and recruitment program. There were mascots, like Sgt. Stubby in World War I, or personal hunting dogs used in the Civil War, but no official program.

Obedience training may just be the best gift you can give yourself, your family, and your pet this holiday! It teaches your dog appropriate social behavior with both people and animals; helps correct annoying behaviors like jumping, digging, barking, and chewing; and keeps your dog entertained and happy. Youโ€™ll truly be giving yourself a gift that keeps on giving, year after year.

I offer management strategies for difficult behaviors such as counter surfing, jumping, chewing, door dashing, among many, as well as two separate 6-week training sessions for puppies 8 wks-6 mos., and 6 mos. and up.
I will give you the tools to be able to continually challenge your dog long after our training sessions are done. You will not only learn the mechanics of training a new behavior, but you will learn the basic psychology behind training.
Training should be a daily part of your dogโ€™s life for life!
