It's so interesting working with so many puppies, because you get to see so many different personalities, quirks, challenges, and strengths in every single dog. Even when working with primarily Goldendoodles, they are all so uniquely themselves. Wooton struggles with a bit of a toy obsession. If all of the toys are not picked up, it's been hard getting him to focus. We have been working on this steadily by introducing toys of lesser value to the training space, and he has made so much progress and is actually enjoying training sessions and really enjoying his time working with me, which at first it didn't seem like he'd ever get there! This is a first for me, I've never had a puppy that in love with toys before! Here you can see he is dropping toys as soon as he is called. However, when I introduced his absolute favorite kind of toy (faux fur toys), you can see what we have been struggling with during training time because that toy is just too high value for him... or is it? This is a great example of when you should up the value of your reward! As soon as I broke out some shredded meat, I was able to gain his attention again. Eventually the goal would be that even a low value treat, like the prepackaged dog treats I was using with the other toys in this video, will be enough for him to not fixate on the "best toy ever". I am so incredibly proud of him and how far he has come in learning how to focus, even around things that are super valuable to him. This entire scenario paints a picture of how we have to learn how to be more reinforcing than anything else in the environment, and sometimes that means upping the value of the treat used.
