Rat bait/poison doesn’t stop at just the rats/mice.

We treated multiple dogs last year for rat bait ingestion, some survived having we it caught early, but others did not 🥺

If there are rats/mice that have ingested the bait, and an animal than eats that said rat/mouse, that animal than also gets exposed!
It’s a chain reaction!! 💔

🛑 Please stop using the poisonous formulations; there are better options 🛑

We have some very sad news to share. Last night MK succumbed to her illness. After a valiant fight her system was simply no longer able to keep up.

We will know more when the diagnostics come back, but it appears she spontaneously hemorrhaged and began bleeding internally. With the poison in her system she did not have the ability to clot and the bleeding was catastrophic and began to occlude her airway.

Our veterinary team was by her side when it happened and was able to quickly clear her airway and intubate her, provide emergency drugs and fluids as her heart rate slowed, and eventually worked to do compressions to revive her. Sadly it was not enough to bring her back. She was gone in a matter of minutes.

It was always hard to watch a patient in this condition, but MK was particularly devastating. We know how well loved she is here in the Baystate and how many people her presence inspired to connect with our natural environments and the wildlife in them. We hope her case will serve as a true wake up call for people to stop using SGARS, and will ultimately lead to true systemic change. It is time to restrict the use of these poisons. Rodent control does not need to come at the expense of our natural heritage and ecosystem.

We want to sincerely thank everyone who has shared their concern, kind words, and worked to get MK help. Our hearts go out to KZ and all of the people who loved her.

If you would like to help take the critical first steps to provide legislative change please ask your local legislators to support and sponsor HD 577 - put forward by Rep. Hawkins and SD114 - put forth by Rep. Feeney

We will continue to fight for change and public more education. If you would like to help us continue to provide veterinary care to those that suffer and to help lead in the fight with local politicians and organizations, please consider donating in the memory of MK. Thank you all

🐾Announcement!!🐾
As many of you know, we are expecting our baby girl any day now!
I am officially on maternity leave until April ✨

I will have the work phone on hand in case of medication refills, anyone is needing medical records, etc.

💊Medication refills: we will/can still drop off and mail out!

I will not be taking appointments though until April as Todd and I figure out our new roles as first time parents 💜

Thank you for understanding and allowing us this special time with our little girl!

☀️See you all soon when Kels and I are back on the road this Spring! ☀️

With spring only a few weeks away (🙌), it’s not too early to start thinking about a deworming plan for your horses.

If deworming is something you’ve been doing the same way for as long as you can remember, this year we encourage you to break tradition and work with your veterinarian instead. Thanks to tools like the f***l egg count, your horse doctor can help you devise a treatment tailored to the needs of your equine friend plus monitor the efficacy of the dewormer used last. And before you dismiss this notion because you’ve been “doing it for years,” you should know that the old-school approach to deworming is quickly becoming outdated—not only a waste of money but it also builds drug resistance in the parasitic fauna of equines, which means we are running out of drugs that can effectively help us control parasite infections.

For more information, the AAEP Parasite Control Guidelines can be found on our website at https://aaep.org/document/internal-parasite-control-guidelines
As always, consult your equine veterinarian to learn more and for questions specific to your horses!

For your horses ❄️

We have received several texts over the last couple days in regards to the up coming frigid temps on Thursday and Friday. Check out tips below for weathering the temps!

-first and foremost, DON’T PANIC

-allow your horse to have constant access to forage. Free choice hay is the best way for your horse to maintain a warm body temperature

-if we have precipitation, access to shelter or a blanket or both is highly recommended. Wet conditions drastically drop core temp

-make sure your water source is prepared. Have tank heaters or be prepared to break ice multiple times a day. Make sure you have a functional and empty hose on stand by in case of emergency. Check your water sources several times a day to make sure they are functioning properly. Impaction colic is the number one issue we see during big swings in temp. Staying properly hydrated helps to minimize the risk.

-provide your horse with electrolytes to maintain hydration. If adding to water, make sure you have one unadulterated water source also provided

-supply a mash or soaked cubes to help maintain hydration

Horses are resilient! An ounce of preparation is worth a pound of cure!

But if you find yourself in a pickle we will be fielding emergencies Thursday and Friday just reach out at our clinic number 417-448-0131!

MAY THE ODDS BE EVER IN YOUR FAVOR!
